I’ve Never Seen Thor: The Dark World Before. Here’s What I Thought.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe first-time watches continue, and next up on the list is Thor: The Dark World.

In the second Thor film, our hero has to face even more menacing villains and fight to save not only Asgard, but earth and his beloved Jane Foster. Loki, too, is up to his usual trickery and throws us for a few loops throughout the film.

Here’s what I thought.

1. I want every movie to start with an Anthony Hopkins voiceover.

2. These elves can’t catch a break.

3. Asgard people said “nuh uh, you’re not getting this Aether.”

4. Papa Anthony is going to yell at Loki so badly!

5. Loki: “I don’t see what the fuss is all about.” Sweetie, do we not remember the events of the last few films?

6. Your! Birthright! Was! To! Die!

7. Off to the dungeon with Loki!

8. Incoming: badass Sif!

9. Great entrance, Thor!

10. That troll stood no chance.

11. Now that the portal to and from Asgard has been restored, when do we get to visit Jane?

12. Awww his heart still belongs to Jane.

13. Let’s talk about Chris Hemsworth’s banging body, shall we? OOF!

14. Sif so wants Thor. Same.

15. Jane!! Hi my queen!

16. Darcy makes such a great wing woman as she calls you out on all your BS.

17. Say sea bass five times fast.

18. Erik is definitely having a good day all out in the open like that.

19. An astrophysicist not knowing how to change her ringtone is the same as literally anyone not knowing how to use Zoom.

20. A truck floating upside? That doesn’t seem right.

21. The bottle going through some weird wormhole? That doesn’t seem right either!

22. Not the car keys!

23. Is this the “Thor” version of the Upside Down?

24. The elves are back!

25. Our friend Idris Elba is back too!

26. Jane is her own personal umbrella.

27. SLAP!

28. I don’t know how Jane survived that flight to Asgard. I can just imagine myself throwing up violently during the whole thing.

29. How can I get my hands on a book as pretty as the king’s?

30. This elf king really didn’t hesitate to stab the other guy when he said he would sacrifice his life. That’s the definition of a bad friend.

31. OK, this dungeon is way too nice. Loki is living it up in style.

32. Why does this scene with Thor and Jane in this beautiful Asgard landscape remind me so much of the Padme and Anakin sand scene from “Star Wars”?

33. Well, it looks like the nice, restful time in the dungeons is over.

34. You do NOT have Thor’s word! He’s about to kick some butt!

35. Ooooh that look between Jane and Sif could kill a man.

36. Come on, Idris Elba!! Save Asgard!

37. Oh boy, this will not end well.

38. Damn it! The Asgard shield is going away!

39. Destroying this gorgeous palace and no one seems to care? Am I secretly watching another “Iron Man” film?

40. Frigga and Jane teaming up for a good trick!

41. Oh no, not Frigga!

42. That was actually a very nice funeral, except for the gigantic waterfall drop! Scary much!

43. Good to see Erik found some clothes.

44. Ahhh Stan Lee sighting!!!

45. Jane’s outfits in this movie are 10/10.

46. Papa Anthony has been having tense conversations this entire movie. Will he ever catch a break?

47. Oh boy, Loki is looking ROUGH.

48. Haha nice Steve Rogers/Captain America appearance.

49. The trickster gets tricked!

50. I love everyone’s loyalty to Thor and disdain toward Loki.

51. Where is your driver’s manual, Thor!?

52. “Oh, dear, is she dead?” LOL!

53. THANK YOU FOR THE COMMENTARY, LOKI!!

54. After seeing that intense ride to Loki’s lair, I now understand why Jane was like “yeah, I’m out, gonna nap real quick.”

55. Loki controlling Erik’s mind in “The Avengers” really did a number on him!

56. No, Thor, why did you free Loki!?! Have you not learned ANYTHING!?!?

57. Yep, there goes the betrayal!

58. HOLY S— LOKI JUST CUT OFF THOR’S HAND!

59. OMG! They were in on it the whole time! I’m shook!!

60. Awww, cute brother save!

61. How anyone could be stronger than a literal god is beside me.

62. This monster just got wrecked.

63. Thor is too good of a guy to be this upset about Loki dying. I know he’s his brother, but, again, do we not remember everything that he’s done over the last few years?

64. Jane is like get me the f— home already.

65. Thor listening to this awkward call between Jane and Richard is hilarious.

66. The keys! The shoes! The portal!

67. Oh my god Erik in his undies LOL.

68. This space ship does not care that it’s crashing into every building possible.

69. Why doesn’t Marvel do a movie on the regular people who live in the MCU world who have to see crazy s— like this all the time?

70. I’m just going to pretend that I understand everything that’s going on with this science stuff.

71. Apparently the MCU movie on humans living in this world would be about how they just stand around, watch crazy stuff happen and then wonder why they get hurt. Case in point, these people did not listen to Jane when she said to get out of the library.

72. This is literally “Thor: The Multiportalverse of Madness.”

73. That London Underground scene was pretty silly.

74. Well that seemed easy enough. They’ve really got to amp up the drama with these battles.

75. He’s going to come back, Jane, don’t worry.

76. Thor being a good man yet again.

77. WOAH WHAT! LOKI IS ALIVE!!!

78. Whoops, they just gave an infinity stone to the wrong person.

79. Thor’s back! Thor and Jane forever!

Overall Thoughts on Thor: The Dark World

Compared to the first Thor film, Thor: The Dark World was more exciting and entertaining. Now that we know who these characters are, I feel like they were able to have a lot more fun with their roles – definitely Stellan Skarsgård as Erik! – and we got to explore their relationships a little deeper.

Thor and Loki definitely have a complicated history together, especially with what the trickster has done in the last few MCU films, so it was nice to see them interact more as brothers than enemies.

I still think the filmmakers hold back too much on the battles in the Thor movies. Everything seems to work out way too easily, and they don’t have a lot of fun with them. I mean, if a giant space ship was crashing down on earth, I would think there would be a lot more fanfare.

The portal stuff that Jane figured out was pretty cool, but it still seemed a bit too tame for me. Plus everything gets figured out and solved so quickly. Throw in a little more drama and tension, please!

About Thor: The Dark World

In ancient times, the gods of Asgard fought and won a war against an evil race known as the Dark Elves. The survivors were neutralized, and their ultimate weapon — the Aether — was buried in a secret location.

Hundreds of years later, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) finds the Aether and becomes its host, forcing Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to bring her to Asgard before Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) captures her and uses the weapon to destroy the Nine Realms — including Earth.
