The Boys Season 3 Is Bigger, Bloodier, & More Political

The Boys season 3 is bigger, bloodier, and more political than ever before. This season is completely bonkers, in the best way possible.

The boys season 3 review

The Boys has always been unafraid to embrace blood, guts, and political ties to the real world, but season 3 takes it up a notch. This season picks up a year after we last spent time with the Supes and the Boys and things have changed quite a bit. Some people are living the high life, while others are dealing with some serious PTSD. What follows is a battle of good versus evil, or perhaps evil versus eviler.

The boys season 3 review

In order to keep this review completely spoiler free, it will be a bit vague. That said, there is still a lot we can talk about. If you thought seasons one and two were wild, crazy, and filled with blood and gore — just you wait. The Boys season 3 is bloodier, bigger, and yes, even more political. There are many references to real life political conflicts including racism, toxic followers, and unruly rallies.

If something political happened in the real world prior to (or during) filming, The Boys season 3 mentioned in some way, shape, or form. This is a brilliant way to, at least try, to get some strong points across. As outsiders looking in perhaps viewers will understand the error of these ways — but probably not.

The boys season 3 review

This season of The Boys also deals with PTSD — and not just for one person. The events that took place a year ago were tragic for many, and there is still a whole lot to unpack there. Of course Homelander and Billy Butcher still hate each other with a passion and Starlight and Hughie are going strong.

Everyone has something going on in their lives, and they all tie together into one cohesive story, making this a very bingeable season, although we still recommend watching week to week so that you are not left out of the conversation, and not spoiled because there are some major twists. Great actors making cameos, shocking moments like never before, and some returning characters that viewers likely never expected to see again.

The boys season 3 musical number

One of my favorite things about The Boys season 3 is the musical number — yes, you read that right — there is a full on musical number and it is absolutely amazing. This is one of those moments that will have viewers laughing as they are completely shocked by what is going on. It might seem out of place, yet somehow it works. It really works. It’s fun, unexpected, and just an absolute joy to watch.

The boys season 3 homelander

Homelander has one of the best arcs this season, and some of the best moments. He has his ups and his downs and Antony Starr steals many scenes. Starr is so very good at being a horrible person. He may come off as powerful and confident, but under the surface Homelander has some serious issues, which get addressed often in this season. You almost — ALMOST — feel bad for him.

The boys season 3 soldier boy

Jensen Ackles joins the cast of The Boys this season as Solider Boy, who is very much like the “new” Captain America in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He is brutal, racist, sexist, and simply put, a jerk. Yet, once again, Ackles brings a humanity to him that will tug at some heartstrings and make viewers not only relate to him at times, but feel for him.

Ackles is a wonderful casting choice for this character, and a refreshing addition to the cast. Suddenly, Homelander isn’t the worst person on the screen anymore, and it feels very weird to say that. The two of them going head to head provides some of the best action this show has ever seen. And speaking of the action, here is where The Boys has raised the bar yet again.

As seen in the trailers, Butcher himself has powers now, thanks to Temporary V. This adds a whole new element to the show, and brings with it a ton of fun, and a whole lot more gore. It’s a great way to switch things up and keep the story refreshing and new. Especially as more and more is revealed about this drug, and its side effects.

The boys season 3 a-train

A-Train has a pretty solid storyline as well, with some heavy themes surrounding racism and morality. Since being unable to run like he used to, he is searching for his place in the world, and in the Seven, and is at a bit of a loss on where to find it. Some of the most powerful scenes in The Boys season 3 involve him. Again, this is due to the fact that they are so believable and real, and unfortunately what people in the world are dealing with today.

The boys season 3 starlight

Starlight has always been the shining beacon of the show, and she brings that to season 3, however she also grows a lot. She is forced to “grin and bare it” but when you keep kicking someone down, eventually they rise up. Her journey this season is admirable, and it is wonderful to see her unafraid to hide anymore. Starlight might be taken advantage of and dragged down, but she will resist, and wait until you see it happen.

The boys season 3 review

Overall The Boys season 3 comes together in the end, with a nice temporary ending that is clearly leading into the already confirmed season 4. It will leave viewers with their jaws on the floor (and perhaps a pit in their stomach because of the reality of the situation). The Boys season 4 can’t come soon enough — here’s to hoping they push the envelop even further. We are willing to bet that they will.

The Boys season 3 is bigger, bloodier, and more political than ever before. It is completely bonkers and filled with jaw dropping moments, shocking twists, and pure insanity. It doesn’t get much better than this.

About The Boys Season 3

It’s been a year of calm. Homelander’s subdued. Butcher works for the government, supervised by Hughie of all people. But both men itch to turn this peace and quiet into blood and bone. So when The Boys learn of a mysterious Anti-Supe weapon, it sends them crashing into the Seven, starting a war, and chasing the legend of the first Superhero: Soldier Boy.

The Boys is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes—who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians, and as revered as gods—abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. Intent on stopping the corrupt superheroes, The Boys, a group of vigilantes, continue their heroic quest to expose the truth about The Seven and Vought—the multibillion-dollar conglomerate that manages the superheroes and covers up their dirty secrets. It’s the seemingly powerless against the super powerful.

Season Three of The Boys stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Jensen Ackles.

The Boys Season 3 will premiere on Prime Video with the first three episodes on Friday, June 3, and new episodes available each Friday following, culminating in an epic season finale on July 8.
