Frank of Ireland Season One Review

If you like slapstick and vulgar comedy, Frank of Ireland starring Brian and Domhnall Gleeson is sure to be right up your alley!

Frank of Ireland poster

Frank of Ireland is a hilarious comedy show about a down on his luck guy named Frank, played by Brian Gleeson, and his best friend Doofus, played by Domhnall Gleeson. The first six episodes, which are coming soon to Amazon Prime Video, take viewers on a journey that will have them cracking up, and maybe, just maybe, feeling bad for Frank.

Frank is newly single and lives at home with his mom. He seems to think that he is a gift to the world, and that everyone owes him something. While this does get a bit old here and there, his attitude takes the show to the next level. All too often we have comedies where the main characters are down on themselves, and the way Frank acts seems to bring a uniqueness to the show overall.

Frank Of Ireland S1, Ep3 Doofus (Domhnall Gleeson), Frank (Brian Gleeson)

Each episode is about 22 minutes long, making this a very easy to watch first season. Although, a lot of the jokes had me rolling my eyes, and that isn’t a good thing. I did kind of adore seeing Domhnall Gleeson in this kind of role since it is so much different from his Star Wars and Harry Potter characters. Doofus is a good friend, and anyone would be lucky to have him.

The chemistry between Domhnall and Brian is great, but this is likely because they are real life brothers, not because of the writing. I think this really helps the show because their relationship is believable — because they are actually related. But their relationship is by far the best part of the show. If you like slapstick and vulgar comedy, Frank of Ireland is something that is likely right up your alley. However, be warned that there are a lot of moments that drag on and the comedy grows old as it is the same jokes over and over.

Overall I struggled to get through the final three episodes and it just felt like I was watching the same thing over and over. The character of Frank became like nails on a chalkboard to me, but I powered through and finished it up. I don’t suggest you even both but if you do like off the wall comedy, you might enjoy the first few episodes.

About Frank of Ireland

Frank of Ireland is a physical and ridiculous brand of humor with an original twist. Brian Gleeson (Peaky Blinders, The Bisexual), stars as Frank Marron, a 32-year-old catastrophe; a misanthropic fantasist in arrested development who’s convinced that the world owes him. He’s also our hero.

Frank is newly single and still lives at home with his mother, Mary (Pom Boyd, Rosie). He’s a self-proclaimed musician with a tenuous hold on reality, and hasn’t written a song or played a gig in years. His ex-girlfriend Áine (Sarah Greene, Dublin Murders) has just found a new boyfriend, and Frank may be finding that a tad difficult.

Luckily, Frank has a loyal best friend, Doofus, (Domhnall Gleeson, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) whose full-time job is clearing the debris left in Frank’s wake. Set in an idyllic suburb of Dublin, Frank of Ireland is the hilarious story of a man’s hapless search for respect, as he struggles to grow up and get his life together, and hopefully not burn everything to the ground in the process.

Frank of Ireland comes to Amazon Prime Video April 16th!
