Securing the Iron Throne is one thing; keeping it is another entirely. In House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 3, Rhaenyra Targaryen learns the bitter truth of ruling a hostile capital. Despite sitting in the Red Keep, the foundations of her power begin to splinter under the weight of financial sabotage, religious resistance, and battlefield betrayals.

Rhaenyra’s coronation hits an immediate, devastating roadblock when it is revealed that the crown’s gold has been completely smuggled out of King’s Landing, leaving the city nearly bankrupt. Unable to pay the city watch or feed the starving smallfolk, Rhaenyra’s public support begins to erode before her reign even properly starts.

To make matters worse, the spiritual heart of Westeros refuses to legitimize her. The High Septon publicly refuses to anoint her as Queen, citing her lack of a traditional ceremony and the suspicious nature of her ascension. Rhaenyra takes a radical step and has Aegon II declared dead, hoping to extinguish any lingering hope for the Green faction.

The internal politics of Team Black grow equally tense. Corlys asks for Alyn and Addam to officially take his name. However, Rhaenyra, after some pondering, denies that request, fearing that legitimizing more dragonseed bastards will not be to her benefit, considering the questioning of her own sons’ parentage. This decision breeds immediate resentment within the Velaryon ranks.

In the Reach, the war rages on with terrifying momentum. Ormund Hightower leads the Green host to a massive victory, officially taking Tumbleton after a bloody siege.
