A HUGE thank you to Nintendo for sending me a download code to check out Paper Mario: Origami King. I am obsessed with it. Like, it is literally hard to put the Nintendo Switch down to do other things. This game is so much fun. I love the plot, I love the new way to battle enemies, and I have way too much fun throwing confetti in the air. If you are a fan of Mario, Paper Mario, or just gaming in general, I think you will have a lot of fun with this one!

Now, we have two Nintendo Switches in our house. The original intent of this was so that the adults could game on one, and the kids could game on the other. Well ever since Animal Crossing came out it has been near impossible to pry the Switches out of my daughters’ hands. Until this weekend.

When I got the download code for Paper Mario: The Origami King I put my foot down. I let them know that for at least a few hours, one of the Switches was mine. Nintendo was my first gaming system and I fell in love with Mario when I was a little girl.

Paper Mario: The Origami King Plot

I mean, for real, how much fun are Mario games?! And now there are so many variations of them — with Paper Mario being one of my favorites. In this game we get what I think is a fun and unique plot. King Olly has transformed Princess Peach and many of her subjects into origami.

Of course, they try to turn Mario too, but he escapes before they can. Mario’s enemies – Goombas, Koopas, Shy Guys, and more have also been turned into origami. At least some of them. The Princess’ castle has been wrapped up in paper and moved. Mario’s goal is to unravel all the paper streamers that are around the castle, and save Princess Peach.

He doesn’t have to do this alone though, he has the help of an adorable little origami fairy. The elements of the Nintendo Switch are uniquely brought into the game, which I absolutely love. For example, sometimes you can grow these crazy arms and you have to move the Switch controllers around to grip items and pull them down or hit them — things like that.

While you are trying to do this along the way there are many hidden and folded up Toads that you have to rescue. And once you do, they show up at your battle arena to cheer you on (see photo below). You can even pay them coins to help you out!

Paper Mario: The Origami King New Battling System

One of my favorite parts about this game is the battling system. I enjoy it because it is not only a battle, it is a puzzle. You have a certain amount of moves to line your enemies up correctly, so that they can be easily taken out with your weapons. Mess that up and you are going to have a harder time defeating them.

You are not only given a certain number of moves, you are given a time limit to do this. I admit the first few times, my heart was pounding and I was very worked up about getting it right. But then I just fell into the fun of it!

Throwing Confetti In Paper Mario: The Origami King

Something I have entirely way too much fun doing in this game is throwing confetti. Why do you throw confetti? To cover up not so bottomless pits of course. Duh. When you do this all sorts of things are revealed. Coins, Toads, and magic spots that give you those crazy arms I was talking to you about.

Overall Thoughts on Paper Mario: The Origami King

I have told you this before but I am a completionist by nature. I need to get 100% when I beat a game or it is almost like what is the point for me. Crazy. I know. So I really love that this game has a simple way to tell how I am doing. Just hit + and it pulls up the percentages for each spot you have been in — in detail.

I mean it will tell you the percentage of holes you covered, Toads you rescued, and ? blocks you hit. It is a completionsist’s dream. It is also the reason I have been playing this game for over 4 hours and have only just unraveled the first streamer.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is a super fun Paper Mario game for the whole family! My daughters love it, my husband loves it, and I love it. It literally hurts me to put the game down, that is how much fun I am having with it. I imagine I will have beat it by the end of the week. And honestly, it is a game I would play over again a second time!

About Paper Mario: The Origami King

Oh no! Mario discovers an eerily empty Toad Town after he receives an invitation from Princess Peach to attend this year’s origami festival. Even more distressing, it appears Princess Peach herself has been turned into origami by the diabolical King Olly, the power-hungry would be ruler of the Origami Kingdom!

Now, Mario faces some of his trickiest challenges yet as he disembarks on a thrilling quest to untie the massive streamers binding Princess Peach’s Castle to a distant mountain.

The Paper Mario: The Origami King game marks the debut of the classic action-adventure
series on the Nintendo Switch system. Get ready for an expansive journey filled with
visual splendor, boisterous new bosses, puzzles galore and a cavalcade of confetti!
