The Doctor Who Season 12 Premiere has aired and had quite the James Bond feel to it. It also ended in a huge twist and cliffhanger. SPOILER WARNING!

Doctor Who season 12 premiered last night after taking over a year off, and the wait was more than worth it. For a new Doctor Who fan like me, I was immediately reminded just how much I love this series, and why. It also made me realize I lack a lot of Doctor Who knowledge, and that I need to start binging older episodes ASAP. The premiere ended with a cliffhanger and a giant twist, that has me counting down the seconds until Sunday night’s episode.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Doctor Who Season 12 premiere.

It Sucked Me Right Back In

The season premiere sucked me right back in and I remembered immediately why I loved Doctor Who season 11 so much. The chemistry between the main characters is off the charts — and gosh I love Graham. How could you not? This episode had me laughing, gasping, and on the edge of my seat — exactly how I want to be when watching a SciFi show like this.

Doctor Who is one of the few geek culture genres I know very little about. But I am learning. And this episode made me want to lock myself away from the world until I know all the things.

Doctor Who The Master

Who Is The Master?

I admit, I could tell this was a MAJOR reveal, but I needed to do some research. As you probably know I have not watched much Doctor Who, so I had not heard of this character. The Doctor Who season 2 premiere did do a great job of letting newbies like me know The Master was a big deal. A villain that has been around for a very long time, and someone we should know about.

After researching, I discovered The Master has been in episodes since the early Doctor Who seasons — and was first introduced in 1971. This villain is a Time Lord, like The Doctor is, but evil. Apparently they were once good friends though. And are now the only Time Lords left in existence. The Doctor of course likes humans, but The Master does not. At all.

I look forward to seeing more of The Master throughout Doctor Who — and I imagine he will be the “big bad” and major villain of season 12.

Overall Thoughts

The Doctor Who season 12 premiere was one of the best episode of Doctor Who I have ever seen. All that being said, I only started watching it last season. Yes, the 13th Doctor is the only one I have watched. However, I know that David Tennant, one of my all time favorite actors, was a Doctor. As was Peter Capalidi. So I do have plans to go back and watch past seasons. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

This episode was clearly based on James Bond — which I loved. It is called “Spyfall.” It was only a part 1, with part 2 airing on Sunday night. The music and action had me hanging on to every scene. And I have to admit, I did not see THAT twist coming. I knew that O seemed shady, and seemed to know a lot about The Doctor, but I did not think he would be a villain. Especially such a famous one.

About Doctor Who

An eccentric yet compassionate extraterrestrial Time Lord zips through time and space to solve problems and battle injustice across the universe, traveling via the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space), which is his old and occasionally unreliable spaceship that resembles a blue police phone box (but changes its appearance depending on its surroundings) and is much, much larger inside than outside.

Doctor Who Season 12 will continue on BBC America on Sunday, January 5th at 8pm ET — and will continue to air at this time every week.
