When I learned that Black Mirror was coming back for a fifth season, I was ecstatic! It is one of my favorite Netflix shows. Even my least favorite episode, is one I would watch again. I ranked all the Black Mirror episodes, if you want to check that out. I have to admit, I was disappointed to see that there were only three episodes in Black Mirror season 5. Would that be enough?
Well, this was kind of a call back to season one, which also had only three episodes. I do like that they are stand alone episodes, so I can watch them out of order if I wish to. I will say that my favorite episode of Black Mirror is now one from Season 5!
ABOUT: College pals Danny and Karl reunite in a virtual reality session of their favorite game. However, something unexpected comes out of their nighttime escapades.
This episode is CRAZY! I had no idea what direction it was going to go in – and when I figured it out – I was shocked. You might know this already, but I love Anthony Mackie (I am a bit of a Marvel buff) so I was excited to see him star in one of the new Black Mirror episodes. I could totally relate to getting sucked in to a video and playing all night with a friend – but I could not relate to what was about to happen.
Even though it gets weird – it is worth watching. This was my least favorite episode of the season, but I still enjoyed it.
ABOUT: A London-based driver captures a social media mogul, sparking an international state of emergency.
If I am being totally honest, this episode dragged a little bit for me. I wasn’t sure where it was going for a while, but when it finally made it there, I was here for it. What an incredible realization for those of us that use our phones constantly. I know I am guilty of it.
The second half of this episode makes it more than worth watching. And Topher Grace was amazing in his role as a beaten down technology developer. From the moment he was introduced on, this episode had me on the edge of my seat.
Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too
ABOUT: An introverted teen fixates on an AI inspired by Ashley O, her favorite popstar. Meanwhile, Ashley’s own life begins to come apart at the seams.
Let me start off my saying that I adore Miley Cyrus. I have a half written article about how her music helped me through a very tough time in my life. It will be published eventually – but honestly, it is a hard one to write.
So anyways, this episode stars Miley as a pop star – Ashley O. She is spunky and adorable – and rocks some seriously awesome pink hair. I immediately felt for her when it was apparent she was putting on a front – just to make her Aunt happy and keep up appearances.
It honestly reminded me of how I imagine MIley felt when she was transitioning from her Hannah Montana days. She didn’t want that squeaky clean reputation any more – and she wanted to do her own thing. Look how far she has come, and how amazing she is (did I mention that I adore her?).
This episode does have a LOT of language, especially toward the end. There is some violence, and down right cruelty to humans. But it is EVERYTHING! When this episode ended, it skyrocketed to my favorite Black Mirror episode ever. Even if you just watch this one – do it!
The spin on technology was in true Black Mirror form. It was creepy. There was backstabbing. And great lessons to be learned. It was such an amazing episode that I have watched it twice so far – and am sure to watch it at least two or three more times before the month is over.
Overall Thoughts on Season 5
Season 5 started off weird, and a little slow, but then it picked right up. The first two episodes fall neatly in the middle of the pack for me if I were to rank every Black Mirror episode ever. But the final one was a clear standout for me. It had mystery, technology advancements, and even some attempted murder. Not to mention the bad language – and I am a sucker for bad language where it fits. It certainly helps that I love me some Miley Cyrus too!
For me, season 5 is a must watch. Most people will enjoy all of the episodes – and they all fit neatly in the Black Mirror type of themes. If you like things that will make you think, and quite possibly freak you out – Black Mirror is for you! Watch Black Mirror on Netflix!
