We love going to the Great New York State Fair every year. It is something that our family looks forward to all year long. We usually go at least one or two days – and have so much fun! This year, the fairgrounds had been improved and WOW – the place looks great! I just love the main gates now – gorgeous! If you follow me on Snapchat or Instagram, I am sure you saw my stories as I was there this past weekend. Planning a trip to the fair for the first time can be overwhelming. Even if you have been, you can easily miss some great stuff because there is so much to see and do. No matter what you check out, you are sure to have a blast, but here are my 3 things that I don’t think anyone should skip. They are fun for the whole family and things that we come back to year after year.
Birds of Prey
The Birds of Prey show is pretty cool – but what is even cooler is that you (or your child!) can hold a falcon! Yes, they can hold it and you can take pictures of it – and it is amazing. My daughters LOVED doing this. There is a small fee attached ($10 per person) but you can take 5 or 6 photos and the money goes to a good cause. This year was our first time doing this, and I can assure you that we will continue to do this every year we come back to the fair.
The Milk Bar
There was a little bit of a controversy this year over The Milk Bar, but everything worked out (I guess) and a cup of cold fresh milk is still only 25 cents each at the fair. This is a stop that we always make about half way through the day. The milk is refreshing after walking around in the heat. You can choose chocolate or white milk (fingers crossed they add strawberry at some point) and it is so good! The Milk Bar changed it’s name this year (from the Rainbow Milk Bar) and I love the new look.
Butterfly Tent
If you and your kids love butterflies, this is place to go! This is a tent filled with butterflies! The cost is only $2 per person and you get a Q-tip to dip in nectar. You can feed the butterflies and they will even land on you! My husband and I each had them land on our faces and heads. My 3 year old had one on her head as well. The kids love this and you can spend as long as you want in the tent. This is something we check out at least once (sometimes twice!) in a trip. Some of the butterflies are exotic so they check you over a few times to make sure you don’t have any hitchhikers before you leave.
There is so much more to do at The Great New York State Fair – check out my list of kid friendly things and my guide to the food for more tips and tricks when going!
