‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ Review – Logic Isn’t Strong Here, Still Fun

0

It’s been since 2016 that we’ve had a Now You See Me movie in theaters. The mashup of magic and heist with whatever ideals the Eye has was a fascinating one for audiences. For those first two movies, they end up as entertaining bits of action where you have to stretch the suspension of disbelief. With the return of the Four Horsemen, there’s more suspension required, but there’s also some fresh new members of the group being added. This time around, we have the old guard of Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt (Woody Harrelson), Jack (Dave Franco), and Henley (Isla Fisher) joining up with a trio of new magicians in Charlie (Justice Smith), Bosco (Dominic Sessa), and June (Ariana Greenblatt).

The three new people are brought on board because they’ve been impersonating the Four Horsemen to put on magic shows, and The Eye has mysteriously been sending out invitations in the form of tarot cards to each of the Horsemen. After the events of the second film, everyone hates each other, so the new people act as a great way to reintroduce audiences, but also, from a storytelling standpoint, to help improve the chemistry.

The villain here is Veronika Vanderberg (played by Rosamund Pike), who runs one of the oldest diamond families in history, but with some added bits of criminality and corruption. Vanderberg is a fine villain who ends up challenging the Horsemen in more ways than one. It’s also just kind of nice to see a villain in a film in 2025 who is a completely rich idiot.

The Good Of Now You See Me, Now You Don’t

image 16

Ruben Fleischer directs the hell out of this movie. It’s stylish, full of flair, and there’s no other movie series you can think of watching this. The best part of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is that the new cast seamlessly moves in with the old guard. They each get their own segments to mesh together, but seeing the old generation with Jesse Eisenberg butt heads and go up with the younger generation with Dominic Sessa is great.

The writing here for the banter between the magicians is excellent. They give everyone their own time to shine, and splitting them up is a stroke of genius. Woody Harrelson is always a highlight, and in this movie, he’s no different. The real surprise is the other characters that come around in the film. Normally, it would feel overwhelming, but this movie juggles the different characters really well.

The new kids are very much aimed at bringing in that younger audience for those who might not have been present when the first film came out in 2016. They’re in this for different reasons than the original Horsemen, but they still want to change the world for the better.

The scenes where you can see this dynamic come into play are the best ones in the film. Atlas doing his old school magic alongside Bosco and his crew, acting out a diversion with security, is an early highlight. There’s also a lot of humor here that breaks up some of the longer, more expositional moments of the film.

The Bad And Ugly Of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t

There are some massive logical questions that come into play with Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. Like way more than what comes with the first films. That suspension of disbelief that I was mentioning before gets stretched to the absolute maximum, especially during the big explanation of why their whole trick and really the entire plot of the film goes down. There are simply far too many coincidences going on all at once. And I know, this is a movie about magicians trying to steal things for the good of humankind for a group called The Eye.

Even with all of that baked in, the coincidences are a bit too much to overcome while watching the movie. Also, the main cast might mesh pretty well together, but some of the other characters that get brought back or added to the mix don’t mesh as well. There’s also just a stock, cliche death/dying scene in the middle of the film that sticks out like a sore thumb. This is where the problems with the script and relying so hard on the chemistry of the cast come in. It’s not a terrible script; it sufficiently gets the plot from A to B to C, but between Seth Grahame-Smith, Michael Lesslie, Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick, there were too many cooks in this kitchen.

All These Issues Aside, This Was Still Very Entertaining

image 17

Through the nearly two-hour runtime of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, there were plenty of points where they make you want to roll your eyes. Accents sound off, logic goes out the window, and it feels a bit silly. However, there’s still a lot to like in this movie, including the premise. This magical Ocean’s Eleven of magic, with some extravagant tricks, still lands. The cast comes together and even through those massive logical holes, there’s a good time to be had with Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. It’s an entertaining as hell movie where there’s some potential for more with this new cast.

Now You See Me: Now You Don’t releases in theaters on November 14th.

Solar Opposites Season 6 Review: The Perfect Ending

0

Solar Opposites Season 6 does a wonderful job of wrapping everything up nicely as it is the final season, but still leaving enough to explore just in case it comes back.

Solar Opposites season 6 review
SOLAR OPPOSITES – “The Paternal Oil” – Jesse and Korvo compete to be crowned the “dad” of their alien family. (Disney) SOLAR OPPOSITES

As a big fan of the series from the very beginning, I hvae to admit I was devastated when I heard that Solar Opposites Season 6 would be the final season. This show has been near perfect from the start, and has only gotten better with time. The Wall and SilverCops side stories keep things interesting, while the main plot gives us the humor that we want as fans, while also delivering a story about an alien family that in the end, just wants to fit in.

The writers did a brilliant job this season making sure that those who have watched all the episodes over the years would see a lot of nods and references to past seasons. Some are quite obvious while others are enough to make fans chuckle and point at the screen just like the Leonardo DiCaprio meme. This is something that rewards those that have been with the series from the start, and means a lot to people like me.

It was also important to wrap up Solar Opposites in a way that gives viewers closure. Sure, there is always room for the show to return should another network pick it up or Hulu change their mind (please Hulu! Please!!), but it feels complete at the same time. No larger questions are left unanswered. In fact, there are a lot of details that are revealed that came as a complete surprise to me (in the best way possible).

Solar Opposites season 6 review

Of course I love the story of Terry, Korvo, Yumyulack, Jesse, and The Pupa, but I also found myself heavily invested in The Wall and the SilverCops B and C plots. The Wall in particular is one that has changed and evolved throughout the season, allowing those working on the show to get to explore new genres every season. The ending to this story, which I will not reveal, is pure perfection. It is completely unexpected, in the best way possible.

As for the SilverCops story, that is done justice as well. I am thankful that the creators and writers opted to wrap up these stories as well. Therefore it feels like it was not a waste of time becoming interested in these characters and these stories.

Solar Opposites season 6 review
SOLAR OPPOSITES – “What is the Mission Anyway?” – Series Finale: A mysterious Silver signal is causing the Pupa to transform into murderous creatures. (Disney) SOLAR OPPOSITES

As it surely comes as no surprise, the Solars’ ending also gives fans what they want. The reveals are thrilling and exciting, as well as hilarious (of course). This season feels like a love letter to the fans and to the first five seasons.

It is sad to see the series ending, but it could not have gone out in a better way. There are wild action sequences, hilarious antics, and even emotional moments that tie it all together into something truly special. I love this crazy alien family, and I hope to see them return to my screen some day. Until then I will be watching these six seasons over and over.

About Solar Opposites Season 6

Once their alien diamond making machine gets destroyed, the Solar Opposites must face their greatest challenge yet: living their expensive lives on a budget! When their consumerist habits and expensive hobbies are gone, only their true selves will remain…but will they like who they find? ALSO: The epic story of the people of The Wall has all built to this thrilling and shocking conclusion…

The sixth and final season of Solar Opposites premieres Monday, Oct. 13 with all 10 episodes on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

‘Deathstalker’ Review – Badass Sword And Sorcery Action

0

We don’t have nearly enough sword and sorcery films these days. Like the Western, the musical, or any other genre that was popular in yesteryear, sword and sorcery films have been tossed to the wayside, until now. Yes, with the release of Deathstalker from writer/director Steven Kostanski, we finally have a sword and sorcery film to be proud of. And one that kicks an immeasurable amount of ass.

Deathstalker is a remake/reimagining of the classic 1983 film about the last great warrior king. This time around Deathstalker is played by action veteran Daniel Bernhardt and follows his quest to stop the siege of the Kingdom of Abraxeon by the Dreadites. Deathstalker recovers an ancient amulet and is marked for death by dark magic, and has to break the curse and destroy the rising evil.

The original came from Roger Corman, who gave us a world overrun by evil witches, sorcerers, and other monsters. Steven Kostanski does more of the same, giving us an effects-heavy actioner that should thrill any fans of those old school sword and sorcery movies. Kostanski’s style comes through, especially with the creatures and the ingenuity in their design and use on screen. If you enjoyed his previous films like PG: Psycho Goreman or Frankie Freako, you’ll get a kick out of this.

The movie wastes no time getting to the chase, the set-up is right there. The Dreadite hordes are taking over the kingdom and we get the answer to who is ready to take a stand against them: Deathstalker.

image 15

The best part about this new reimagining is that we actually learn more about the titular Deathstalker. He’s more than just a hulked-up muscleman. There are layers, and we even learn his real name over the course of the film. Daniel Bernhardt flat-out rules as the character. He’s an older, more grizzled version than we’ve seen before, but that adds to the character overall. The idea that this character, who’s given up on the world for so long, now has to save it, is great. That feeling of giving up is tied to the mystical amulet he’s now bonded with. No matter how hard he tries, the amulet keeps coming back, like that feeling of wanting to save the world.

Along the journey, he’s joined by Doodad, voiced by Patton Oswalt, a goblin that uses magic and assists Deathstalker. They also meet up with Brisbayne (Christina Orjalo) as they’re chased by Nekromemnon and his lackeys. Over the course of its 102-minute runtime, we get plenty of action and creatures. There’s no lack of things to look at on screen. There’s also a three-bladed sword that is utterly badass.

At the end of the day, this is a wonderful update to the 80s cult classic. Kostanski brings his own personal style, but this is still that sort of nostalgic feeling, sword and sorcery film.

image 14

Deathstalker is an insane time all around. There are practical effects galore. Daniel Bernhardt absolutely kicks a savage amount of ass in the title role. Steven Kostanski brings in his trademark style while still paying homage to the sword and sorcery films that came before it.

Deathstalker releases on October 10th.

In this touching scene, Eric (Manny Jacinto, The Good Place, Nine Perfect Strangers) opens up to his daughter Lily (Sophia Hammons, Under Wraps). He reflects on the challenges of parenting after Lily’s mom passed away and shares how he found guidance and comfort in Tess’ (Jamie Lee Curtis, Halloween, Everything Everywhere All At Once) book. What makes this moment even more powerful is the Freaky Friday twist – Lily and Tess have swapped bodies, so Eric is unknowingly speaking directly to Tess in Lily’s body.

It’s an emotional, heartfelt scene that deepens the family dynamics at the core of Freakier Friday, and one fans will not want to miss.

KPop Demon Hunters’ EJAE Announces Surprise Single, In Another World

0

EJAE, the singing voice of Rumi in KPop Demon Hunters and co-writer of many of the songs, has announced a new single titled In Another World.

KPop Demon Hunters' EJAE Announces Surprise Single, In Another World

KPop Demon Hunters has taken the world by storm, which has kept EJAE, singer and songwriter, very busy. And things are about to get even busier for her.

After her surprise appearance on Oct 4th’s SNL Season 51 opener with Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna, also known as HUNTR/X, in support of KPop Demon Hunters, EJAE has just announced her debut solo single In Another World.

The single will be released on October 24th. Fans can pre-save it here.

Announcement From EJAE:

KPop Demon Hunters' EJAE Announces Surprise Single, In Another World

Below is the text used in her announcement and attached is the assets she used to launch on her IG in both English and Korean as well as the single cover.

The past few months have been a crazy ride… I mean, I was just on SNL!!! I’m so humbled and grateful for the love I’ve received as a songwriter and the singing voice of Rumi from KPop Demon Hunters. Getting so much exposure so quickly has been strange, exciting, and truthfully a little scary. People keep referring to me as an “artist” or a “star” – which is everything 11 year old EJAE dreamed of, but over the years, I became comfortable behind the scenes and I didn’t think I was meant to be an artist.

Recently though, I realized I don’t need to box myself into being the traditional view of an artist. To me, an artist is someone who uses their art to express themselves, and songwriting is my art. For years, writing has been my therapy, my way of coping, celebrating, making sense of the noise in my head. Along the way, I wrote some songs that never found the right home. I’ve decided I want my artist project to give life to those songs, so people can laugh, dance, or cry with me and the amazing collaborators who helped create them.

There’s one song that feels like the perfect place to start. Writing this song helped me through a hard time, and I hope that sharing it can help others too.

It’s called “In Another World” and is releasing on 10/24/25.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me so far. I know my journey is still being written, and I am so grateful to anyone who is willing to tune in.

Yours truly,
EJAE

Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl Review

Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl beautifully celebrates The Life Of A Showgirl and shares Taylor’s inspiration behind every song.

Taylor Swift: The Life of a Showgirl Official Release Party Review

Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl is in theaters now, and even if you are a casual Swiftie, I highly recommend going to see it. Have always said that the majority of Taylor Swift’s songs need multiple listens in order to really digest the lyrics, and her twelfth album, The Life Of A Showgirl, is no different.

But what really will make you appreciate every song is knowing the inspiration behind it. Taylor is giving her fans something truly special with Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl. Not only does it give us a chance to see the music video for The Fate Of Ophelia before anyone else (and on a huge screen, no less), Taylor herself sits down and explains the meaning and inspiration behind every track on the album.

And yes, of course, she offers up an adorable side-eyed smirk as she tries to convince everyone that Wood is about superstitions and not Travis Kelce’s big d***.

Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl Review

This is a chance for us to get to know her just a little bit more. She details what she was thinking about when writing all twelve tracks on The Life Of A Showgirl. Viewers are able to not only see the first music video of the album, but also the official lyric videos for them (which are all amazing, of course).

Weaved in between the lyric videos is the making of The Fate Of Ophelia music video. She reunited all her dancers from The Eras Tour, as well as those who worked behind the scenes, to deliver something truly special. Thankfully, the film allows us to see the video twice. Once at the start, and then again to close it out after we saw all of the behind-the-scenes footage.

Say what you will, but Taylor Swift can do it all. Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl lets us see her in the director’s chair as well. She takes her job seriously, and she is really, really good at it. I love getting to see her in her element. I kept recalling how she is supposed to be directing a feature film at some point and honestly, I cannot wait for that, because she knows what she is doing.

The Life Of A Showgirl is a short album, but I enjoyed every song on first listen. For those that were not my favorites, they are already growing on me. Especially after learning what was going through Taylor’s mind as she wrote them, seeing the love that she has for them, and getting to see her being silly and fun as she discusses them. And my favorites? Well, I am officially obsessed with them now.

Taylor Swift’s aesthetic for this album is gorgeous. I love seeing her embrace her beauty and her body. This continues through all of the lyric videos. As for the music video for The Fate Of Ophelia, get ready to have your mind blown.

The Official Release Party of a Showgirl

Celebrate The Official Release Party of a Showgirl in theatres only October 3rd – 5th. See the exclusive world premiere of the music video, “The Fate of Ophelia”, along with behind-the-scenes footage from the music video shoot, brand new lyric videos, and Taylor’s never-before-seen personal reflections on songs from her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl.

Bone Lake Interview: “We Have Been Called Barbarian’s Hornier Sibling”

0

In this interview, the Bone Lake cast and director talk about the film’s thrilling, sexy vibe and why a scary Airbnb story hits so close to home.

Last year at Fantastic Fest, a little indie horror film called Bone Lake took me completely by surprise. It quickly became my favorite movie of the festival, and I’ve been championing it ever since. I was shocked it wasn’t immediately picked up for distribution, but its patience has paid off. Bone Lake has finally found a home and is arriving in theaters on October 3, where you absolutely must see it. This isn’t just another horror film; it’s a brilliant, sexy, and terrifying thrill ride that demands to be seen with an audience.

I sat down with director Mercedes Bryce Morgan and the incredibly talented cast – Maddie Hasson, Marco Pigossi, Alex Roe, and Andra Nechita – to discuss what makes Bone Lake such a unique and terrifying cinematic experience. We talked about everything from the challenges of shooting an indie film in just 18 days to the brilliant on-set chemistry that brought their characters to life, and why a horror film about an Airbnb is so relatable to modern audiences.

Bone Lake Is A Cinematic Experience Like No Other

Director Mercedes Bryce Morgan shared my excitement about the film’s theatrical release. “It feels so cool because we wanted to have just the right people supporting it,” she told me. At Fantastic Fest, the audience reactions were everything she’d hoped for – the gasps, the shouts of “Why are you doing that?!” – all confirming that the movie had found its people. “That’s what I wanted,” Morgan said. “It’s the theater-going experience.”

Both the cast and director emphasized how crucial the communal experience is to the film. As Alex Roe noted, seeing it with a crowd is a “different movie.” The collective energy of people reacting together to the film’s wild and absurd moments creates an electric atmosphere. Marco Pigossi suggested it’s the perfect first date movie. “You’re just like, ‘What would you do in that situation?’ And boom, you got an answer.” he joked.

Weaving In The Terror Of The Modern World

Bone Lake Interview: "We Have Been Called Barbarian's Hornier Sibling"

Bone Lake taps into a very specific, modern fear: the vulnerability of staying in an Airbnb. Both the cast and director agreed that the inherent discomfort of being in a stranger’s home – surrounded by their personal belongings and pictures – is a terrifying premise.

“You’re staying in somebody else’s home, you know?” Alex Roe said. “There’s this element where you’re already like, ‘Am I supposed to be here?'” Andra Nechita added that the concept is so effective because “most people have stayed at an Airbnb at some point,” making the fear incredibly relatable. Mercedes Bryce Morgan pointed out that she’s heard the film compared to Barbarian, which also plays on this theme, and she proudly declared Bone Lake its “hornier sibling.”

When asked what she would do if she showed up to an Airbnb with another couple already there, Morgan joked, “I think I would become friends with them and find out all their deepest, darkest secrets because I would maybe want to mess with them too.” The cast, however, had a more practical and self-preserving response. “Goodbye!” said Marco Pigossi. “I’m great at running,” Maddie Hasson added.

Blending Horror, Sex, & Laughs

Bone Lake movie review

One of the film’s most striking elements is its seamless blend of humor, eroticism, and pure horror. It’s a combination that works because, as Mercedes Bryce Morgan explained, sex and violence are closely linked in our psyche. The film leans into the absurdity and camp, creating a “very campy and silly and ridiculous” tone while still grounding it in a character you feel for. Morgan wanted a cast that could handle this delicate balance. She praised her lead actors, Maddie Hasson and Marco Pigossi, for their ability to bring a grounded quality, and Alex Roe and Andra Nechita for their knack for “having this fun, sexy vibe, but then just kind of get really big with it.”

The cast also praised the director, noting her clear vision, even with a hectic shooting schedule of just 18 days. The fight choreography, which Andra Nechita had to meticulously rehearse, paid off in tense, climactic scenes. The director also revealed that the intense boat fight scene at the end of the film was something she dreaded but ultimately felt a sense of relief when they “nailed it.” She even mentioned that there are five alternate endings that were filmed and tested before she ultimately decided on the right one.

The Power of Indie Film and Community

Bone Lake Interview: "We Have Been Called Barbarian's Hornier Sibling"

The director and cast were genuinely touched by the film’s grassroots support, including my own personal mission to get people to see it at Fantastic Fest. “We are an indie movie through and through,” Mercedes Bryce Morgan said. “And so the way that that happens is we have people who love it share word of mouth. And so that just really means a lot.” It’s clear the film was a labor of love for everyone involved. Maddie Hasson, who can’t swim, even took lessons for a “wild” water scene. Just wait until you see it.

KPop Demon Hunters Interview: HUNTR/X & Directors Talk Global Phenomenon

HUNTR/X (EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami) and co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans dish on the record breaking success of KPop Demon Hunters.

I don’t have to tell you that KPop Demon Hunters has been a runaway success because everyone already knows. The incredible animated film has captivated audiences worldwide and climbed to the top of the music charts in just a few short months. Its original soundtrack, featuring the fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X, has surpassed some of the biggest names in K-pop.

Mama’s Geeky sat down with HUNTR/X – EJAE (singing voice of Rumi), Audrey Nuna (singing voice of Mira), and Rei Ami (singing voice of Zoey) – as well as directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, to discuss the film’s incredible journey. I can honestly say that this film has changed my life, and has sent me down a K-Pop rabbit hole that I never want to crawl out of.

KPop Demon Hunters Is Taking The World By Storm

The cast and crew are still in awe of the film’s massive impact, which they had hoped for, but had not anticipated. Especially not at this scale. When asked about their reaction to the songs charting on the Billboard 100, the trio of artists struggled to find the right words. They described the feeling as “out of body,” “over the moon,” and “like the iconic Spongebob levitating meme.”

For the directors, who once hoped the film would be “medium big,” the success has been a whirlwind of “elevating energy from the fans.” (FOR THE FANS!) Almost immediately, fans were cosplaying The Saja Boys and HUNTR/X, creating shrines for Jinu (R.I.P. King), and connecting online via fan edits.

I have, more than once, burst into song with other KPop Demon Hunters fans that I pass on the street or in a store. And I know for a fact I am not hte only one because there are clips of it all over social media.

On The Power of Storytelling & Music

KPop Demon Hunters Interview

The story of KPop Demon Hunters was originally pitched to EJAE four or five years ago, when she was working as a writer. She immediately saw the potential in the film’s genius concept, which breaks the mold of what animated films can be.

During our interview, Chris Appelhans shared how the filmmakers drew inspiration from K-dramas, using mood boards filled with GIFs of iconic acting moments to inform the characters and their expressions. This unique approach, combined with the film’s powerful music and authentic storytelling, is a large part of why it has resonated with so many people.

The song What It Sounds Like holds a particularly deep meaning for the cast. While the group’s debut song, “Golden,” is about celebrating the best parts of themselves, the reveal “What It Sounds Like” represents a deeper form of empowerment. HUNTR/X explains that the song is about accepting all the parts of yourself – the “jagged edges” and the “dark and the light side.”

It’s a moment of emotional catharsis where the girls accept their flaws, find their chosen family, and don’t have to choose between different parts of their identities. And it is a part of the film that will always, ALWAYS, make me cry.

What’s Next for HUNTR/X?

KPop Demon Hunters Interview Huntr/x

Fans are eagerly anticipating the first live performance from HUNTR/X, and they don’t have to wait very long. In fact, by the time you are reading this, they might have already performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (currently scheduled for October 7th). When asked about it, the girls admitted to being both excited and a little scared, but confident in their performance. EJAE admits that there are some high notes she needs to hit while singing “Golden”, but says with her girls by her side, she can do it.

When asked about a possible HUNTR/X tour, it is clear the trio is open to it. Literally responding with “why not?” While it would be a lot of fun, it would also be a lot of work, but fans are still crossing their fingers and hoping for that day to come.

I once again had to ask the directors about a sequel or spin-off series, even if I knew I would not get a straight answer. While they remained tight-lipped, their playful avoidance of the question suggests that more of the HUNTR/X world could be on the horizon. The global demand for a sequel is undeniable, with fans hoping for any way to get more of the beloved characters and their music.
