Fallout Season 2 Review: Just As Good As Season 1, If Not Better

0

Fallout Season 2 is packed with incredible action sequences, laugh-out-loud humor, Easter eggs, and an ensemble cast that brings their A-game. This review is based solely on the first six episodes.

The first season of Amazon’s Fallout series was a perfect adaptation of the darkly humorous, action-packed, and deeply satirical spirit of the beloved video game franchise. Yet, based on the first six episodes of the second season, the creative team has managed the near-impossible: they’ve upped the ante, delivering a sophomore run that is somehow richer, more intense, and even more exhilarating than the last.

The first season’s conclusion left fans, particularly those devoted to the Fallout video games like myself, reeling with anticipation. The tease of the New Vegas skyline was jaw-dropping, and for someone whose favorite entry is Fallout: New Vegas, I was over the moon with excitement.

Fallout Season 2 dives into that beloved territory, and what’s most impressive is how well it honors the established lore while also adding its own compelling narrative path. The introduction and exploration of figures like Mr. House is handled perfectly, yet the show isn’t afraid to inject smart, impactful twists that keep long-time fans on their toes. It’s a masterful balancing act that serves both newcomers and veterans.

There Is A Lot Going On… But Every Story Is Intriguing

One of the season’s greatest achievements is its ability to seamlessly weave together a multitude of complex and high-stakes plotlines without any of them feeling underdeveloped or rushed. There is a lot more happening than in season one, and the characters are split up even more this time around, requiring the audience to track several key storylines. The writing ensures that no single story arc oversays its welcome. The pacing is constantly shifting focus in a way that works brilliantly.

The drama unfolding beneath the surface for the seemingly pristine Vault Dwellers in Vaults 31, 32, and 33 is at an all-time high. If you thought Fallout Season 1 had a lot going on, just wait. The lingering mystery and the political maneuvering over the water shortage, coupled with the slow reveal of the horrific secrets the vault is hiding, provide tension that could be cut with a knife.

Meanwhile, Ella Purnell’s Lucy continues her relentless quest to find her father, complicated by her uneasy alliance with Walton Goggins’ The Ghoul (aka Cooper Howard). Their dynamic remains the emotional and moral compass of the show, delivering both reflections on human nature and some of the season’s most spectacular action sequences across the Mojave. It is impossible not to root for them and even though he is annoyed by her, they sure are a lot of fun to watch.

Additionally, Aaron Moten’s Maximus is struggling with the fallout (ha, see what I did there?) of the first season’s ending and the weight of his newfound position within the Brotherhood of Steel. His story is one of identity and the difficult choices required for survival in the Wasteland.

Fallout Season 2 Delivers Heart-Pounding Action

Fallout Season 2 Review

The visual spectacle and action are just as exciting as in the first season. Delivering several sequences that are genuinely breathtaking, get ready to have your minds blown. Fallout continues its commitment to high-octane violence and, yes, a generous amount of gore, all in keeping with the video games’ aesthetic, and I could not be more pleased about it.

And for fans, the wait is over: the Deathclaw is here, and boy oh boy, it does not disappoint. The creature is absolutely terrifying. I don’t want to say too much, but get ready because it is as thrilling as it is brutal, cementing its status as one of the Wasteland’s most iconic and feared threats.

Beyond the immediate action, the season expands on the foundational mystery of the Fallout universe by giving us significant time in the past, pre-war era. These flashbacks are not just exposition; they are crucial to character development and arcs that delve into the terrifying details of how the world truly ended. There is so much drama, leading to shocking betrayals that redefine the relationships and motivations of key characters. As the saying goes, nothing is what it seems, and the show leans into this theme tenfold, delivering twist after twist.

A Stellar Cast & Easter Eggs Galore

The ensemble cast, including lead performers such as Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Aaron Moten, continues to shine, bringing depth and nuance to their complex, morally grey characters. This season also boasts a series of wonderful guest stars who flesh out the New Vegas and Wasteland settings with memorable, quirky, and often dangerous inhabitants. You might even see some unexpected returning faces.

Despite the intensity and drama, the show never loses its signature Fallout humor. The series is hilarious, perfectly balancing the horrific setting with moments of absurd comedy. It is also sure to sprinkle in many easter eggs and references to the games that will delight any long-time player. It accomplishes this without ever requiring newcomers to be experts. Every necessary piece of information is organically woven into the narrative, allowing anyone to jump in and enjoy the ride without feeling confused or obligated to conduct external research.

Fallout Season 2 Overall Thoughts

Fallout Season 2 Review

Intense, exciting, and extremely well-written, Fallout Season 2 is a triumph through its first six episodes. It successfully merges high-stakes drama with dark comedy and spectacular action, all while deepening its connection to the franchise’s extensive lore. The quality of storytelling, character development, and world-building is next level and, quite honestly, left me begging for more.

If the final two episodes can stick the landing – and given the consistent quality shown thus far, there’s every reason to believe they will – this will easily rank among the best sophomore seasons in modern television.

FALLOUT season two premieres on Prime Video on December 17. One episode will be released on the 17th, with one episode rolling out weekly until February 3.

Avatar: Fire and Ash Review: Not Much More Than Beautiful

0

Avatar: Fire and Ash is an absolutely gorgeous piece of cinema; however, it is overly long, repetitive, and doesn’t say much of anything new.

Avatar: Fire and Ash Review

There is no doubt that James Cameron’s Avatar films are a technical marvel, but they are not much more than that. Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in what is planned to be a five-film saga, is no exception. It is gorgeous to look at, featuring visuals that defy expectations and often leave the audience breathless. However, beneath the dazzling surface, the film unfortunately falls into the same trap of repetition that plagued its immediate predecessor, The Way of Water.

The biggest issue with Fire and Ash is a familiar one for this franchise: an overabundance of set-up for little narrative payoff. James Cameron once again crafts an epic runtime – which, clocking in at over three hours, feels far too long – devoted to establishing characters, showcasing new biomes, and maneuvering pieces for future sequels. While this commitment to world-building is admirable, it comes at the expense of a tightly paced and original story.

Varang Offers A Breath of Fresh, Fiery Air

Avatar: Fire and Ash Review
Varang (Oona Chaplin) in 20th Century Studios’ AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH. Photo courtesy of 20th Century Studios. © 2025 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

The true spark (see what I did there) of originality in Fire and Ash comes with the introduction of the Ash People, or the tribe of fire Na’vi. Leading this new faction is Varang, played by Oona Chaplin, who is easily the best part of this movie. She is the jolt of energy the series desperately needed, bringing something genuinely fresh, new, and exciting to the world of Pandora. Varang embodies a more complex and most certainly villainous side of the Na’vi species. They are not merely the noble, nature-loving idealists we’ve spent two films with; they are fierce, selfish, and morally ambiguous.

Varang is interesting, exciting, and a whole lot of fun to watch. Her fiery aesthetic and survivalist philosophy instantly set her apart, creating a compelling counterpoint to Jake Sully’s forest and ocean tribes. Furthermore, her interactions with the resurrected human-Na’vi antagonist, Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), are surprisingly delightful. Their back-and-forth (and more) often provides much-needed comedy to break up the intense, high-stakes action and what are meant to be emotional moments, but just drag.

There Is A Good Avatar Movie In Here… If You Cut An Hour Or So Out

Avatar: Fire and Ash Review
Payakan in 20th Century Studios’ AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH. Photo courtesy of 20th Century Studios. © 2025 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

While the film certainly has its moments, particularly during the stunningly choreographed third-act confrontation, the journey to get there drags and is boring in parts. Much of this is due to scenes that could have been severely trimmed or cut out entirely. Sure, I love Payakan as much as the next person, but there is no need to almost retell the same story we got in the last film to ensure his inclusion. These sequences, while visually majestic and clearly intended to connect to the ecological themes of the previous film, halt the main narrative’s momentum and contribute heavily to the overly long runtime.

The technical artistry, however, is undeniable. Yet, even the most impressive visuals cannot mask the sense of repeated plot points. We are watching, fundamentally, the same conflict unfold, with not enough new material to set it apart from its predecessors.

Avatar: Fire and Ash Review
Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) in 20th Century Studios’ AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH. Photo courtesy of 20th Century Studios. © 2025 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

A returning issue that continues is the performance capture of Sigourney Weaver. Her portrayal of a young Na’vi character, Kiri, is just not believable. She is playing a young teen, and while Kiri looks the part, Weaver has a hard time capturing the voice. Maybe this is because, as a fan of hers, I know her age and just simply cannot allow my brain to put that aside. While Weaver is a brilliant actress, the visual effect paired with the mature voice constantly pulled me out of the story, making it difficult to suspend disbelief regarding Kiri’s age.

Ultimately, the sense of repetition peaks during the finale. The climax is an undeniable spectacle, but it suffers from a powerful sense of déjà vu. The ending feels like the exact same ending we got in The Way of Water – a massive, visually chaotic battle sequence that resolves very little, primarily serving to establish the next inevitable confrontation. This lack of true narrative finality is what transforms a breathtaking cinema experience into a frustratingly elongated chapter.

Overall Thoughts On Avatar: Fire and Ash

(L-R) Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) in 20th Century Studios’ AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH. Photo courtesy of 20th Century Studios. © 2025 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

In conclusion, Avatar: Fire and Ash is gorgeous to look at and certainly has its moments, delivering some fantastic and exciting action sequences. Varang is a marvelous and engaging new addition to the story. However, the film as a whole is structurally flawed, suffering from an excessive runtime, a repetitive plot, and too many scenes dedicated to world-building at the expense of coherent storytelling.

Avatar: Fire and Ash comes to theaters on December 19th.

The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball Season 2 EPs Interview

The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball executive producers Ben Bocquelet and Erik Fountain discuss Season 2 of the beloved series in this interview.

The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball Season 2 EPs Interview

The Wonderfully Wacky World Of Gumball‘s highly anticipated second season is almost upon us. Executive producers Ben Bocquelet and Erik Fountain recently sat down with Mama’s Geeky to discuss the overwhelmingly positive reception of Gumball’s return, the challenges of recasting iconic roles, and the fun of weaving modern-day satire into the fabric of Elmore.

A Genuinely Heartwarming Return For Gumball

The first season’s reception was a huge success, and the executive producers admit to being genuinely relieved and touched by the public’s excitement. Given the long gap between series, there was a real concern that viewers might have moved on.

Ben Bocquelet shared the anxiety leading up to the premiere, stating, “We’re all anxious about coming back on air, but you’re not sure that they will show up.”

He added that the kind and enthusiastic response has only fueled their creative drive: “In truth that we’ve been received with open arms and such kindness and excitement that it really makes us want to do more.”

Erik Fountain echoed this sentiment, admitting his primary fear was “fumbling the ball.” Seeing the immediate embrace from the fanbase was a massive relief. “But then seeing the fans embrace it was a huge sigh of relief,” he said.

Recasting the Iconic Duo Of Gumball & Darwin

One of the biggest hurdles for the returning series was the necessary recasting of the titular characters, Gumball and Darwin. As the original voice actors aged out of the roles, which has happened in the past, finding new talent that could capture the essence of the characters was important.

Fountain noted that fans were somewhat “conditioned” to change, as new voices for Gumball and Darwin have occurred across previous seasons. His concerns were more internal, stating, “I think it was more my own insecurities I was worried about. It’s not fair of me to project that onto the world.”

Bocquelet credited casting director Sarah Noonan for finding actors who not only sounded right but embodied the roles. “It’s not just a question of do they sound alike? It’s can they capture what the characters are like as well?” Bocquelet said. The current cast, he believes, has done a fantastic job.

The producers also noted a delightful synergy between the new actors. Bocquelet observed, “It feels like they became friends while recording,” mirroring the chaotic, yet loving, bond of Gumball and Darwin themselves.

Satirizing Modern Life

The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball Season 2 EPs Interview

The Amazing World of Gumball was celebrated for its witty, meta-commentary on real-world issues and trends, and the new series, The Wonderfully Wacky World Of Gumball, is no exception. Bocquelet admits that the hiatus provided a wealth of material ripe for satire.

“Modern stuff lends itself to being satirized,” Bocquelet remarked. “It’s begging for a beating, if anything. So it was good. We were itching for it, I guess. Five-year gap of just watching the world go around and hating the way it goes.”

Addressing the Cliffhanger: The Rewrite

The producers also touched on the highly anticipated resolution to the cliffhanger that ended the previous series, noting the decision to address it later in Season 2 with a special episode, “The Rewrite,” was an organic one.

“Quite frankly, we wrote it late,” Ben Bocquelet admitted with a laugh. After deciding on an exciting angle, they ran with it. Fountain defended the pacing, believing it made the reveal more meaningful. “It felt appropriate to me too, right? Because then it lets people kind of ease back into the show,” he said.

This approach allowed fans to re-acclimate to the new voice actors and the world of Elmore before diving into the show’s deeper mythology, or “heavy lore stuff.”

Favorite Season 2 Episodes

When asked about specific episodes, both EPs excitedly pointed to several coming soon. Erik Fountain is particularly looking forward to “The Unfollow,” where Gumball and Darwin desperately try to win back their stalker Sarah Gelato’s attention after she unfollows them on social media.

“It really showcases what Gumball has to offer with different techniques,” Fountain explained. “And just the premise is so funny.”

Ben Bocquelet is excited for “The Pants,” a story about Gumball’s inability to cope with Banana Joe starting to wear pants. “It’s an exploration of what does it mean to be naked when you’re a cartoon, really? Or what does it mean to wear clothes at all?” He also teased a fun Yuki and Nicole-centric episode.

The future is bright for fans of Gumball. Ben Bocquelet hopes they “get to do even more.” Given the strong reception and the creative energy the producers clearly still possess, it seems Elmore is here to stay. Be sure to watch the full interview for more behind-the-scenes details.

Back to Lumiose City: Pokémon Legends: Z-A Gets a Mega Dimension DLC

0

It is time to head back to Lumiose City as Pokémon Legends: Z-A gets a Mega Dimension DLC – and it is just as fantastic as fans would expect.

The Best Gifts For Geeks [2025 Gift Guide]

The grand adventure in Lumiose City just got a whole lot grander! Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the latest installment in the action-RPG sub-series, has captivated trainers with its real-time battles, urban setting, and, of course, the thrilling return of Mega Evolution. And now, the excitement is amplified with the release of the massive Mega Dimension DLC!

The core experience of Pokémon Legends: Z-A is truly a blast. As a Trainer dedicated to protecting the peace of Lumiose City, you embark on an epic journey that breaks the mold of traditional Pokémon RPGs. Choosing between Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile as your first partner Pokémon sets the stage for a compelling narrative focused on urban redevelopment and the mysterious phenomenon of Rogue Mega Evolutions. I had a really hard time picking, but I do love a fire type, so Tepig became my starter. The best part about this game is that it is a really fun replay, so I know I will have the chance to start with them all at some point!

As a dedicated player, I can attest to how incredibly fun this game is. The core loop of exploring the city, catching Pokémon (gotta complete that Pokédex, as always!), and engaging in the new real-time battles is incredibly satisfying. The story is entertaining, especially as you climb the ranks of the nightly Z-A Royale for a chance at a granted wish. But the real star is getting your own Mega Ring and Mega Stones. Mega Evolving your Pokémon in real-time adds a dynamic, powerful element to combat that has been sorely missed. After beating the main story, I’ve been happily leveling up my teams – but now, there’s a whole new reason to dive back in!

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension DLC Is Here

Back to Lumiose City: Pokémon Legends: Z-A Gets a Mega Dimension DLC

The new Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Mega Dimension DLC is exactly the post-game content I’ve been craving! The adventure continues as mysterious distortions appear in Lumiose City, linking to the otherworldly Hyperspace Lumiose.

This is where things get interesting! The Mythical Pokémon Hoopa makes an appearance, requiring the help of you and the talented baker, Ansha, to gather Berries and make donuts (yes, donuts!) that power up Hoopa and create portals to this new dimension. What a delightful and uniquely Pokémon way to start a new quest!

Once in Hyperspace Lumiose, you join the Mega Evolution expert, Korrina, and Team MZ to explore its secrets. Be warned: Hyperspace Lumiose is a threatening, different version of the city. The Pokémon found here are unique, rare, and boast hyperspace levels that can exceed the normal limit of 100, presenting a truly formidable challenge for seasoned Trainers.

New Mega Evolutions and Must-Have Gear

Back to Lumiose City: Pokémon Legends: Z-A Gets a Mega Dimension DLC

One of the most exciting reveals of the Mega Dimension DLC is the promise of newly-discovered Mega Evolutions!

  • Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y (two new forms for the fan-favorite Electric-type!)
  • Mega Chimecho
  • Mega Baxcalibur

These new forms add yet another layer to the already deep Mega Evolution mechanics, offering fresh strategies for competitive and casual trainers alike.

Plus, you can instantly claim and wear the stylish Holo-X and Holo-Y in-game apparel items to show off your dedication to the Hyperspace journey! Simply access the Outfit & Looks menu after you’ve unlocked character customization in the main game.

Back to Lumiose City: Pokémon Legends: Z-A Gets a Mega Dimension DLC

Whether you’re looking for a new challenge for your maxed-out team or eager to discover new Mega Evolutions and unravel a cosmic mystery, the Mega Dimension DLC is a must-have upgrade. The base game was excellent, and this expansion is proving to be just as captivating.

ATEEZ VR CONCERT: LIGHT THE WAY Is More Than Worth The Cost

0

Atiny rejoice, the ATEEZ VR CONCERT: LIGHT THE WAY is more than worth the cost as it delivers the experience of a lifetime – and of course, photocards!

ATEEZ VR CONCERT: LIGHT THE WAY Is More Than Worth The Cost

As a proud Atiny, there was no way I was going to miss the ATEEZ VR CONCERT: LIGHT THE WAY. The moment tickets went on sale, I grabbed two for the first Los Angeles showing to attend with my bestie. We had the time of our lives, and I knew immediately that I would be going back. I then attended with a group of friends for the final night of Phase 1, and of course, I had to return for Phase 2 in order to get the new photocard outfits. Three times so far, and I am already thinking about going back for a fourth.

My first thought on this VR Concert is that it is way too short. But that is just me being selfish. Atiny are used to in-person concerts that are more than three hours long, so we are conditioned to seeing our ULT Group for long periods of time. That said, the runtime of 45 minutes or so is actually pretty perfect. The VR headset isn’t uncomfortable by any means, but if you stay in there long enough, you will likely get a little motion sickness.

One of the best parts of LIGHT THE WAY is that you get to select a member to take you through the show. While the whole group performs, of course, there are interim moments where your bias saves you – even offering you his hand at the end, and yes, this is just as exciting as you think, even though we know it is not real. As a Hongjoong bias, I chose him twice before going with my wrecker, San, for my third viewing. I felt guilty the whole time, but it was fun to see how different members acted in the scenes. I almost want to go six more times just to experience everyone, because let’s face it, like most Atiny, I really am OT8 in my heart.

ATEEZ VR CONCERT: LIGHT THE WAY is an unforgettable experience. Concert tickets are expensive, and even if you are lucky enough to get front row, the members will not be this close to you when they perform. There are moments where they are practically on top of you (and no, I am not complaining). As they look directly into the camera, it seems as if they are looking right into your eyes, deep into your soul, and really raising that delulu that we all have (and that they know we have and yet they love it).

The choreography and song choices are incredible. I would have loved to see In Your Fantasy, but I also do not know if I would have survived it. My theater was packed with screaming Atiny, which made me feel the same connection I feel at concerts. That communal experience is one of the reasons I love going to live shows. You even get a virtual light stick and the ability to do heart hands and send hearts to the members. That is a really fun and interactive addition to the show.

Of course, the performances are amazing; we would expect nothing less from ATEEZ, but I also really enjoy the “ATEEZ Show” portion of LIGHT THE WAY. The members sit down, directly in front of you, to have a chat with one another and discuss filming the concert, bringing a unique experience to Atiny, and what concept they would like to explore next. It is always fun to watch them interact with one another, laughing and having fun.

ATEEZ VR CONCERT: LIGHT THE WAY U.S. Benefits

Benefits aside, LIGHT THE WAY is worth the cost, but the inclusion of a photocard, commemorative ticket (I really miss physical concert tickets), and poster makes it even more worth it.

ATEEZ VR CONCERT: LIGHT THE WAY Is More Than Worth The Cost
  • Random ATEEZ Member Photocard (Phase 1 or Phase 2)
  • Lucky Pull: Limited Special Hologram Photocard (Randomly included in both Phases)
  • Official Commemorative Ticket
  • Photocard Holder
  • Official Poster
  • VR Hygiene Mask (disposable)

ATEEZ VR CONCERT: LIGHT THE WAY SETLIST

  • Inception
  • Wake Up
  • MIST
  • Cyberpunk
  • Deja Vu
  • Ice On My Teeth
  • Bouncy (K-HOT CHILLI PEPPERS)

ATEEZ VR CONCERT: LIGHT THE WAY is playing in select theaters now, with more cities coming in the new year. If you are ATINY, this is absolutely worth your time.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery Review

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery once again delivers a twisted, shocking murder mystery while referencing modern society. It boasts another incredible ensemble cast.

10 Most Exciting Next On Netflix Announcements

The Knives Out franchise, which was created by writer-director Rian Johnson, has firmly established itself as a beloved exploration of the whodunit genre. The latest installment, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, not only meets the high expectations set by its predecessors but raises the bar at the same time, delivering a film that is arguably the most complex and ultimately satisfying entry yet.

Rian Johnson’s success lies in his ability to deconstruct and reassemble the murder mystery formula, ensuring that even familiar tropes feel fresh and exciting. He always obtains a stellar ensemble cast, and just when you think they cannot get any better, they do. This film in particular, tackles religion and politics, two things most would stay away from, but not Rian Johnson. What we end up with is an incredibly entertaining, hilarious, and downright shocking murder mystery.

Rian Johnson Has Secured Another Stellar Ensemble Cast

As with all entries in the series, the ensemble cast assembled for Wake Up Dead Man is truly exceptional. While every performance contributes meaningfully to the dynamic tension – a hallmark of the series – a few stand-outs help this story become the best that it can be.

Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin, and the legendary Glenn Close deliver particularly compelling and layered performances that enhance the core mystery and emotional stakes. Their characters are rich with hidden motivations and personal histories (that will leave your jaw on the floor once revealed), executed with a remarkable subtlety. The chemistry among the entire cast is unmatched, which is why viewers will have a hard time putting all the pieces together – which is Rian Johnson’s intention, of course.

Wake Up Dead Man Excels In Cinematography & Visuals As Well

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery Review

Rian Johnson’s technical ambition also shines brightly throughout the film. The lighting design, in particular, moves beyond mere visual flair to become a key narrative tool, shaping the emotional landscape of the movie. During some of the most dramatic moments, the sun will either go behind a cloud or peek out from behind it, which enhances the scene. Johnson knows exactly what he is doing in these key moments. The score also contributes to these thrilling, exciting, and shocking scenes.

While the film runs for over two hours, the pacing is on point. The time flies by as the audience is drawn deeper into the mystery of it all, trying to put it all together, knowing full well they probably will not succeed. Wake Up Dead Man never feels indulgent; every scene is a necessary clue or character beat, whether you recognize it upon first watch or not. As with all of the Knives Out franchise, this film lends itself to rewatchability, so that viewers can see everything that was laid out in plain sight.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery Review

The narrative itself is a showcase for Rian Johnson’s intelligence as a writer, expertly blending a classic mystery structure with timely themes and inspirations – something he has always done so well. While not shoved down your throat, there are some political dynamics and an exploration of religion and faith. This sensitive subject is handled with immense care, allowing for genuine interpretation and avoiding any sense of ostracization toward those who are religious (and those who are not).

Overall Thoughts On Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery Review
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. (L-R) Josh O’Connor and Josh Brolin in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Cr. John Wilson/Netflix © 2025

The mystery at the heart of Wake Up Dead Man is surprising and exciting. I personally find this to be my favorite of the three Knives Out films, but perhaps that is just recency bias talking. The twists and turns are relentless, consistently pulling the rug out from under the audience’s preconceived notions. About halfway through, I thought for sure I knew what had happened – and boy was I was wrong.

I cannot talk about this film without mentioning the franchise’s cornerstone, Detective Benoit Blanc. Daniel Craig once again delivers a performance that is both familiar and excitingly fresh (that hair!). Craig continues to find new ways to make us fall in love with the eccentric Southern investigator, ensuring Blanc remains one of cinema’s most delightful and enduring modern detectives. His dry wit, his penetrating intellect, and his surprising moments of empathy make him extremely lovable and often times, hilarious.

With Rian Johnson having already mentioned he has thoughts on the next film during a recent press conference, I am eagerly anticipating more adventures from the world’s most renowned private investigator.

DC’s Supergirl Takes Flight: Q&A With Milly Alcock, James Gunn, & Craig Gillespie

Milly Alcock, James Gunn, and director Craig Gillespie reveal behind-the-scenes details of DC Studios’ Supergirl in support of teaser trailer release.

DC's Supergirl Takes Flight: Q&A With Milly Alcock, James Gunn, & Craig Gillespie

Anticipation is building for Supergirl, the upcoming DC film, as it just released the first teaser trailer. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, the movie promises a gritty, flawed, and deeply emotional take on Kara Zor-El, an approach that has DC fans buzzing with excitement. DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn has championed this project, greenlighting it instantly upon reading Ana Nogueira’s “fantastic” script, noting the importance of strong writing at the studio.

The film’s momentum was recently highlighted in a press conference featuring the movie’s lead, Milly Alcock (as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl), and director Craig Gillespie. Moderating the discussion was James Gunn, who revealed that he had been interested in this unique version of the character from the moment the graphic novel was first published.

He specifically had Alcock in mind for the role, calling this Supergirl a “rock and roll Supergirl,” but emphasized she still had to earn the part through auditions. The conversation offered a thrilling tease of the film’s tone, the character’s dark journey, and how this version of the Kryptonian heroine will stand apart from her famous cousin, Superman.

Supergirl Q&A with the Filmmakers and Star

Why Supergirl and This Creative Team?

James Gunn: “Why Supergirl? Why now? Why Craig? Why Milly? And the reasons are various, but the main one is when Ana Nogueira wrote the Woman of Tomorrow script, it was fantastic. And at DC Studios, we care most about the writing. And so we just instantly greenlit the movie… Craig is one of my favorite directors, has been for a long time. He directed I, Tonya, which was my favorite movie from that year, but also many other movies that I enjoyed. And so when he threw his hat in the ring to direct this film, we were more than interested and now here we are.”

What Excited Craig Gillespie and What Challenges Did He Face?

Craig Gillespie: “It’s twofold for me. One, when I heard that James and Peter were taking over DC, I was very interested because I love James’s work. I love the tone… And the idea that they were going to now take over the studio felt like a huge opportunity. And then the script came along and Ana’s script was so good. And the tone of it, it was the first time I’ve actually read a superhero script for me that I could understand the tone and what to do with it… the script goes to some very dark and hard places for the character. And I felt like you guys would double down on that. Milly, tonally, was perfect for it.”

Describing Supergirl in Comparison to Superman

Superman suit David Corenswet

Milly Alcock: “Supergirl, compared to Superman, she’s had a completely different upbringing. She was brought up on a planet that was dying. Everyone that she’s ever known and loved is dead. So that creates a very cynical, tough… She doesn’t trust a lot of people. She’s got a wall up. She’s got a very big wall up and she’s very skeptical of people. And Clark is the opposite of that. He’s very overtly trusting. He expects the good in people… Kara never pretends. If she’s not feeling well, you will know. She doesn’t have a facade, which is really refreshing actually to play.”

What Aspect of Kara’s Inner World Resonated with Milly Alcock?

Milly Alcock: “Kara doesn’t want to be a hero. And I think that there’s a similarity between my own personal experience being an actor and being able to empathize with having to step up to a certain role and a certain kind of external expectation because you feel like you don’t deserve to. And I think that I could resonate with that. I was like, ‘She has to kind of be the hero of her own story.’ And I think that a lot of us struggle to do that and to feel worthy of that. That is my answer.”

What Does This Supergirl Represent for a New Generation?

Milly Alcock: “I think that what Supergirl represents for young women, especially, is that you can be flawed, that you can be openly… and you don’t have to be perfect in order to come to some internal self-resolution. I think that we’re kind of thrusted upon this narrative, especially women, that you have to be perfect in every aspect of your life. And I think that Kara is someone who so beautifully leans into her flaws. And I think that’s really special.”

What Defines Supergirl as a Unique Hero?

Craig Gillespie: “I think it’s the fact that she’s an anti-hero. What I loved in the story is she doesn’t want the role. When we meet her, she’s, in a very hard way, running away from it and in her own space. And she gets dragged very reluctantly into the world of having to be a superhero. The way she handles that, the way that she deals with it and the way that she finds herself through that story is really fascinating and it’s incomplete, which I love as well.”

What Will Surprise Fans of Superman (2025) About This Film?

Craig Gillespie: “It’s completely different. It’s very different tonally. And what I loved when we met and I said, ‘How much do I have to adhere to Superman in that world?’ And he was like, ‘We’re approaching this like everyone is its own graphic novel. You get to put your stamp on it and your style and your vision.’… Plus, are we allowed to say this? The whole movie takes place in outer space.”

On the Return of Krypto

Superman 2025

James Gunn: “Yeah, [Krypto’s] returning… He’s not a good dog. He’s a terrible dog. He continues to be a terrible dog. The difference is Kara loves him as a terrible dog… Whereas he gets on Clark’s nerves. But maybe he’ll get better. Never.”

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Review: Welcome To The Sea Of Monsters

0

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 delivers higher stakes, heart-wrenching tension, and the introduction of Tyson, whom everyone will fall in love with. It should be noted that this review is based solely on the first four episodes of the season.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Review

After the soaring success of the debut season, Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians has returned for its second outing, tackling the Sea of Monsters arc. As someone who hasn’t read the books by Rick Riordan, I walked into this season having no idea what was going to happen, but I honestly kind of like being able to have an open mind and no expectations.

After the first episode alone, I was absolutely hooked. Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 manages to retain the family watch magic of the first season, while successfully maturing its themes and escalating the tension.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Review

One of the most striking elements of these first four episodes is the shift in character dynamics. Walker Scobell continues to lead the series with a perfect blend of snark and sincerity, but the emotional landscape has changed. The most poignant – and honestly, heartbreaking – aspect of the season so far is the palpable disconnect between Percy and Leah Sava Jeffries’ Annabeth.

In Season 1, we watched them build a foundation of trust against all odds. Now, seeing them on edge with one another is difficult to watch. Sure, it is likely going to be important for the overall arc of the season, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. They are navigating the complexities of friendship and the weight of their shared trauma, and the tension between them makes every scene feel high-stakes.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Review

Adding to this new chemistry is the introduction of Tyson, Percy’s half-brother, played with incredible warmth by Daniel Diemer. Tyson is an instant standout; he is sweet, innocent, and brings a special energy to the screen that balances the darker tones of the quest. Seeing Percy navigate the revelation of having a Cyclops for a brother is a highlight of the early episodes, and Diemer’s performance makes you fall in love with the character immediately.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Review

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 hits the ground running right from the start, wasting no time in thrusting us into the search for the Golden Fleece. The stakes feel personal this year because Aryan Simhadri’s Grover is in genuine peril. Knowing that the series is based on a long-running book franchise provides some comfort that our favorite satyr might be okay, but the show does an excellent job of making his captivity feel urgent and dangerous.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Review

While the trio is fractured, the supporting cast keeps the energy high. Jason Mantzoukas once again steals every single scene he is in as Dionysus (Mr. D). It is clear he is having the time of his life with the role, bringing a chaotic, comedic energy that the show needs to balance its more serious moments.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Review

On the flip side of that energy is Charlie Bushnell’s Luke. After the betrayal at the end of last season, his presence looms large. I don’t trust him for a second, and watching how his influence continues to ripple through the camp, even without him being there, creates a fantastic ticking clock feeling as the camp gets more and more vulnerable.

Now, to get to the aspect that everyone was nervous about. There is always a worry with child actors that a gap between seasons will result in them looking like adults playing children, but thankfully that isn’t the case here. While Scobell and the rest of the young cast have clearly grown, it feels natural to the progression of the story. They look like teenagers who have been hardened by their experiences, which only adds to the show’s credibility.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Review

The technical side of the show remains top-tier. The CGI for the various monsters is realistic and, at times, legitimately terrifying. The creators clearly spent a significant amount of time ensuring the creatures felt like part of the world rather than digital afterthoughts. This is most apparent in the action sequences, specifically the chariot races in Episode 2. It was an edge-of-your-seat moment for me that captured the competitive, dangerous spirit of Camp Half-Blood perfectly.

Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is off to a flying start. By focusing on the emotional rift between the leads and introducing endearing new characters like Tyson, the show has ensured that I am fully invested in the journey to the Sea of Monsters. If the remaining episodes maintain this level of pacing and heart, we are in for a spectacular finish.
