As someone who only recently found themselves spiraling down the K-pop rabbit hole – a descent I fully credit to KPop Demon Hunters – I was excited to watch BTS: The Return because I wanted to know more about the biggest group in the world.

I’ve spent the last few months getting to know different groups and their members, but even as a newcomer, I understood that the reunion of BTS – RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook – after their mandatory military service was so much more than just a comeback. With plans already to see them when they come to Los Angeles, I was eager to dive into this documentary, knowing it would likely push me from casual fan to full-fledged ARMY.

BTS: THE RETURN instantly hooked me with that opening. Hearing (and eventually seeing) all seven members get excited about going live and surprising their fans is a brilliant way to kick things off. Director Bao Nguyen captures their excitement perfectly.

One of my favorite sequences early on was watching the members react to their fans’ comments. Seeing them witness the digital freak out of millions of people as they realized the whole group was finally back together made me feel just as giddy as the longtime fans. It’s infectious and you can’t help but be swept up in the gravity of their presence.

What I appreciated most about this documentary was its refusal to stay on the surface. It allows viewers to see all sides of the members – the icons, the artists, and the men who have clearly been changed by their time apart. As the film progresses, we see them reuniting in Los Angeles, returning to a shared creative space that feels both familiar and entirely new.

I was particularly intrigued by the candid conversations with management. There was a fascinating, almost tense transparency regarding the strategy for their new music. Specifically, the discussions about making their songs more global by incorporating more English.

As a newer fan, I found myself forming a strong opinion here: while the English tracks are great, I honestly don’t think they need them to be global. The emotion and the artistry transcend the language barrier. They could sing entirely in Korean and it wouldn’t change the impact one bit.

I’ve always been a sucker for behind-the-scenes glimpses into the creative process, so the footage from the recording studio was also a personal highlight. Seeing how they honor their decade-long legacy without being trapped by it was deeply moving. You see the moments of doubt and the flashes of laughter, but mostly, you see a brotherhood that is unbreakable.

The documentary does an excellent job of showing that beginning again isn’t easy, even for the biggest band in the world. It frames their new music as a reflection of who they have become as individuals during their time in the military.

BTS: THE RETURN serves as the ultimate companion piece to the new album and the upcoming tour. It provides the emotional context that is not needed, but certainly appreciated. After watching, I had a much deeper understanding of why this group means so much to so many people.

Whether you’ve been there since 2013 or you’re like me, BTS: THE RETURN is an essential watch. It proves that while time apart may have changed them, the magic they create together remains untouched. After finishing it, I am now counting down the days until I can see them live in LA.
