Barron’s Cove is an incredible film, but as a parent, this one was especially difficult to watch. The ensemble cast all deliver great performances.

Take one look at the cast of Barron’s Cove, and it will become instantly clear that even though this is the feature film debut by writer and director Evan Ari Kelman, there is a lot of potential. Garrett Hedlund, Hamish Linklater, Brittany Snow, Christian Convery, Tramell Tillman, and Stephen Lang all deliver unforgettable performances in this chilling thriller.

When Caleb (Hedlund) unexpectedly loses his tween son, not only does he have an emotional breakdown, which is perfectly understandable, but he also vows to go after the one whom he holds responsible. The twist is that he is fairly certain one of his classmates, another young boy, is involved. Overcome with grief, he kidnaps the child (Convery), grilling him about the way the events actually played out that afternoon.
At the same time, he blames himself because he was stuck at work (doing terrible things, I might add), rather than picking his son up at the bus stop for their weekend away at the lake. As a parent myself, I can only imagine the things that would be going through his head, and I cannot say for certain that I would act any differently.

Both Hedland and Convery deliver top-notch performances, which is no surprise if you have seen their work before. Convery is a young actor to keep your eye on, as I am sure he is going places. Hedlund devastatingly captures the reaction I can only imagine most parents would have after losing their child – especially in the horrific way that he loses his son.
Watching these two on screen together is something special. There is a twist to Convery’s character that I will not reveal, but the way that their relationship changes in that moment might seem a little far-fetched considering the circumstances, but it still pulls at your heartstrings. Once again, as a parent, these moments become very hard to watch.

Hedlund also has some unforgettable scenes with Lang, who plays his shady boss who has him beat people up for a living. The two of them on screen are electric, with Lang stealing the show whenever he appears, delivering a subtle yet terrifying performance. He is the perfect casting choice for a crime boss, although I imagine he is quite nice in real life.
Going on this journey alongside Caleb is rough. No parent should ever have to go through this, but your brain cannot help but start spinning and thinking as you watch things unravel. The what-ifs are loud and hard to ignore, at least they were for me. I don’t know that I would act the same way as Caleb if this ever happened, but I do know I would want to.

This movie is intense and well-acted. There are moments that will make your stomach turn and others that will have you holding your children close. It reminds me of Netflix’s Adolescence in terms of how emotional and distressing it can get. Still, it is a great watch with a very satisfying ending.
Barron’s Cove will release in theaters and on VOD on June 6, 2025. If you enjoy a crime thriller, then you certainly do not want to miss this one. Just be warned, if you are a parent, there are some scenes that will be especially difficult to watch. So much so that you might want to hug your children a little harder after watching. I sure did.
