Djimon Hounsou, Staz Nair & Elise Duffy On Rebel Moon Part 2

Tessa Smith: What are you most excited for fans to see in Rebel Moon Part Two?
Staz Nair: I think, for me, a deeper dive into the characters, a deeper dive into understanding them and then seeing how they intersect, how they come together, why they’re there in the first place. That was really fun. And also, seeing these two worlds collide. The warriors becoming farmers, the farmers becoming warriors. It’s like a lot of us, we learn and we relate through humility and meeting each other at the same level. There’s elements of that, us not just being the warriors but also being humbled by the process of being a farmer, what the work entails, or the humanity of learning and starting something from fresh and not knowing everything. And that was just a really wonderful journey. I hope the spectators enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making that.
Elise Duffy: I think you summed it up very nicely.
Djimon Hounsou: I concur. You said it very well.

Tessa Smith: There is one scene, where you are all gathered around a table and talking about your past and how it brought you to the fight against the Motherworld. Can you talk about the importance of including that scene?
Djimon Hounsou: It’s what we didn’t have in the first film, this idea that this group of rebels are finally connecting and coming together for a greater cause. But it really had to do with that particular scene, I think connected all of us. And certainly from that point on the journey of really fighting the Motherworld, itfelt like we were all together for once.
Elise Duffy: It’s a great scene, to see what’s driving everyone because at first you meet all these warriors and you wonder why they would go to such extremes to do what they do, with strangers, no less. And then you get to see the really human, deep elements of them. And I think it makes you really stand with them, by the end, when they’re fighting.
Staz Nair: I one hundred percent agree. I say this a lot, this is the same film. You’re watching two parts of the same film. So when you look at this as a full body of work, it makes sense that we get to discover it. And the second part, I’m really glad people get to, and I think the importance of it is, to allow the spectators to really root for us and understand why we’re there and what it’s taken to get us there. And it was, I think, our favorite moment to film collectively, because it was an opportunity, seldom in action do you get the opportunity to actually do some real drama. And we likened it almost to the theater. It was a 15 minute scene that we did from 2am till 430 in the morning, and we’d already been, because we filmed mainly linearly, we were already six or seven months in, since we’ve had this opportunity to connect. And I think it really helped inform the performance.

Tesa Smith: I’ve always said Zack Snyder knows how to do an action sequence. Can you talk about working with him and his vision, what that entails and what challenges there are?
Staz Nair: He’s in it with us, which is what’s wonderful. I remember this moment, I think he’s behind the scenes, where he’s showing one of the actors what he wants them to do, demonstrating himself with the weapons, what he wants. And I think what’s wonderful about Zack is he’s so passionate about every aspect of it. He is a participator, as well, he trains, I’m pretty sure in martial arts or has trained, he’s a very active man and so the difficulties are just the physical requirements of filming and being in that kind of shape, having such an active physical element that they’re naturally there, but the ease of it is having someone like him steer the ship and also lead by example and not be do as I say, but not as I do. He does what we do as he says, but he also does it himself, which I think made it a lot easier and a lot more unified.
Elise Duffy: Yeah, he also has an amazing stunt team who has worked with for so long, so they just have a way of making the choreography so real and intense, and also visually just so striking.
Staz Nair: Yeah, those guys as a collective were phenomenal. And it’s great to mention them because we wouldn’t have had the physical prowess that we all had in this film without them and their their keen leadership and understanding.
