Sing 2 Review: Its Biggest Issue Is Its Own Marketing

Sing 2 is a beautifully done animated film filled with fun musical numbers, but its biggest downfall is the its own marketing.

sing 2 movie review

The first Sing movie felt so unique and fun, that is was easy to become completely captivated throughout the entire thing. When Sing 2 was first announced, my family was extremely excited and very much looking forward to the next installment. Unfortunately it was the film’s own Marketing strategy that took away that excitement — and it all happened when the second trailer was released.

After watching that, I just had a sinking feeling that I had seen the most important parts of the movie. Then, while watching the movie, I knew it to be true. Had I avoided that trailer, I think Sing 2 would have played out much better. So if you have yet to watch that trailer, don’t do it, and you are likely to enjoy this movie a lot more.

In Sing 2, Buster Moon accidentally promises something he just isn’t sure he can deliver — the return of Clay Calloway to the stage — in order to secure a place for the show that he is putting on with the gang we met in Sing.

What Works With Sing 2

Sing 2 doesn’t shy away from big musical numbers, which is really the highlight of this movie. The cast from the first movie return, along with a few additions, and each and every one of them can sing. Even Nick Kroll adds something fun to the songs with his silly accent he is doing.

The performances are fantastic, but the animation that plays along with them really shines as well. It is bright and beautiful, and easy to lose yourself in. For the younger audience, they will certainly be entertained by what they are seeing on screen, even if they aren’t paying much attention to the story.

Speaking of the story, if I had not seen the second trailer, it would have been a lot more enjoyable. There is a lot of heart here, and the fact that many of the characters teach each other important life lessons while struggling with issues of their own shows the true connection that they have. That they are like a little family of their own, and that is touching.

What Doesn’t Work With Sing 2

As I have already stated, the biggest issue with this film is that I went into it with a very good idea about what was going to happen. Sure, some parts along the way were surprising, but several of the clips chosen for the trailer were taken right from key moments in the movie.

Because of that Sing 2 was extremely predictable, and even started to drag on in the middle since I knew what was coming, and was just eager to get there. This took away from so much of the beauty and meaning of the movie that I truly wish I could have enjoyed.

Overall Thoughts

All of that said, families are going to love this movie. It is not as fun as the first one, but it is close. The song choice is great and the animation is stunning. If you haven’t seen that second trailer for Sing 2, you are in a good position, and likely to enjoy the movie a lot more than those who have.

Sing 2 is a heartwarming journey for families that is full of fantastic music and stunning visuals. However, that second trailer gave far too much of the good stuff away.

Rating: 3 out of 5
