ABC’s new show Home Economics is an absolutely hilarious and must watch family comedy that has an incredible cast.

Home Economics is a new must watch family comedy that has a wide variety of characters, allowing every viewer to find someone they can relate to. It does a great job of combining the drama and comedy that real families go through, and touches on topics like divorce, borrowing money from family, and sibling rivalry. Full disclosure, I have seen only the first three episodes, and that is what this review is based on. Although I can’t imagine that the rest of the season isn’t just as good — or better.

This show follows siblings Tom, Connor, and Sarah and their individual families as they navigate life. While there are a lot of funny moments, there are also some real heartfelt moments, Tom, played by Topher Grace, narrates the story as he discusses writing his next book all about the family. This is something they don’t know about, and he is taking a lot of real moments from their lives and dumping them into it. Down the line this is sure to come out and be hilarious, but also cause some fighting in the family.

What Works With Home Economics

Home Economics really reminds me of Modern Family, and that is a good thing. There is the dynamic of several different siblings and their individual families. The viewers see feuds and underlying issues between them, but there is always that love and heart as well. This is done in a comedic way that will have many laughing as they can relate to situations in the show, but there is enough drama in here to make you actually care about the characters.

Karla Souza, who plays Tom’s wife Marina, says she found her home with comedy, and that feels very obvious when you watch the show. She seems comfortable in the change from drama to comedy, and fits right in with the rest of the hilarious cast. I can definitely relate to her the most, as a mom who lives wine myself. The entire cast is incredible tough, really having that chemistry with each other and feeling believable as a family.

What Doesn’t Work With Home Economics

As with most sitcoms, the pilot has a bit of a pacing issue. The viewers are still trying to get to know the characters and although backstories are important, sometimes the dialogue feels flat getting to that point. This is to be expected with any new show though, and especially one that relies so heavily on comedy mixed with drama.

Overall Thoughts

Home Economics is a must watch comedy when you look at the overall picture for several reasons. The cast is incredible and they have great chemistry. I quickly grew to care about each and every one of them and became compelled to learn more and see what is going to happen when they realize what Tom’s book is about.

This feels like a potential massive hit, especially once it finds its stride as the season(s) go on. It is the perfect combination of drama and comedy, allowing you to laugh and still care at the same time. I am very much looking forward to the continuation of this series. Home Economics is a sitcom that practically everyone can relate to, which is what makes it feel so honest. Everyone has issues with their family, and if they say they don’t, they are lying.
