Universal Pictures took the stage at CinemaCon 2026 with a powerful message: the studio remains firmly committed to a theatrical-first strategy. Donna Langley, chair of NBCUniversal Entertainment, set the tone early, telling theater owners, “We’ve always been a theatrical-first studio, period.” This sentiment was echoed by Jim Orr, President of Domestic Distribution, who emphasized that Universal remains dedicated to the “massive, communal, immersive theatrical experience.”
Before the main presentation, attendees were treated to a special screening of DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island. While I cannot say much about the plot itself, I can share my initial thoughts: Forgotten Island totally had me sobbing (more than once). It is a great film that beautifully celebrates the power of friendship and Filipino culture. It features lovable characters, chaotic fun, and is genuinely hilarious, with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. The film is not even finished yet – much of the animation is still in the rough stages – but what is complete looks absolutely gorgeous. The fact that the studio screened it in this state shows just how much confidence they have in this project. I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to watch it again.

Below are the biggest films highlighted during Universal’s massive presentation.
Forgotten Island
Release Date: September 25, 2026
Synopsis: Written and directed by the team behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado), the film follows Jo (H.E.R.) and Raissa (Liza Soberano), two lifelong best friends and high school graduates who are about to head down different paths. During their final night together, they discover a mysterious portal that transports them to Nakali, a fantastical island filled with magical and mythological creatures from Filipino folklore.
The Odyssey
Release Date: July 17, 2026
Synopsis: Directed by Christopher Nolan, this adaptation of the ancient Greek epic marks the first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. The story follows Odysseus (Matt Damon) as he navigates a journey filled with magic, peril, and epic obstacles, including his encounter with the sea nymph Calypso (Charlize Theron). The film promises a massive, sweeping scale, from intimate dialogue scenes to the legendary stratagem of the Trojan Horse.
Minions & Monsters
Release Date: July 1, 2026
Synopsis: In the latest chapter of the Despicable Me/Minions franchise, the Minions attempt to conquer Hollywood. After becoming movie stars and subsequently losing everything, they accidentally unleash monsters onto the world. The band of Minions must then unite to save the planet from their own chaotic mayhem.
We were treated to several scenes from this upcoming film, and I have to admit, they were pretty hilarious. The Minions can sometimes feel repetitive, but this movie is sure to be fun, unique, and a love letter to the film industry.
One Night Only
Release Date: August 7, 2026
Synopsis: From Anyone But You director Will Gluck, this romantic comedy is set in a world where premarital sex is permitted for only one night each year. The film follows two strangers who meet on that very night.
What we were shown has completely won me over. This looks like a new take on a Romantic Comedy and I cannot wait to see it on the big screen.
Focker-in-Law
Release Date: Thanksgiving 2026
Synopsis: The latest installment in the Meet the Parents franchise brings a next-generation twist to the classic dynamic. As Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) steps into a more overbearing parental role, he faces off against a new, sharp, and self-assured addition to the family, played by Ariana Grande.
I love this franchise, so I am thrilled it is returning. Seeing Greg Focker as the father that must be impressed this time around is sure to add a fun twist to things.
Disclosure Day
Release Date: June 12, 2026
Synopsis: Directed by Steven Spielberg, this sci-fi thriller explores a world-changing revelation. If humanity were proven to be not alone in the universe, how would seven billion people react? The film stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo.
Steven Spielberg. Aliens. Need I say more?
Snoop Dogg Biopic
Synopsis: Described as the “spiritual cousin” to the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton, this biopic will chronicle the life of music icon Snoop Dogg. The film, directed by Craig Brewer, will star Jonathan Daviss as the titular legend and is the first project under Death Row Pictures’ deal with NBCUniversal.
Seeing Snoop Dogg live and in person, performing on stage, healed my heart a little. I cannot wait to see this movie. Jonathan Daviss is a fantastic casting choice.
