Mike Flanagan, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill and more discuss The Life of Chuck‘s unique tone, dance, and core themes during a press conference.

To celebrate the release of the upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck, we attended a press conference with Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Kate Siegel, Benjamin Pajak, Mark Hamill, and Mike Flanagan. This story is not what might immediately come to mind when you hear Stephen King, or Mike Flanagan, for that matter. It is more of a heartwarming tale that explores the deeper meaning of life and humanity.
Mike Flanagan highlighted the story’s “beating heart,” a stark contrast to the visceral horror often associated with King.
“This, to me, is one of his most heartfelt stories maybe ever,” Flanagan stated. He drew parallels to other King stories, Stand by Me and The Green Mile, emphasizing King’s underlying focus on the human condition even in his scarier tales.
“His stories, even the scary ones, aren’t about the monsters. They’re about the people… It’s about the friendship. It’s about the love.” Flanagan also revealed his commitment to preserving King’s original work while selectively adding elements, such as Carl Sagan references, to enrich the narrative.
Tom Hiddleston Spent Most Of His Time On Set Dancing

Tom Hiddleston, who plays the titular Chuck, shared an unsurprising detail about his role: a significant portion of his five filming days were dedicated to an impactful dance sequence.
“I think about 85… Maybe 87 percent” of his time was spent dancing, he admitted. Hiddleston worked extensively with choreographer Mandy Moore and her team to embody the character’s internal freedom through movement. He reflected deeply on the film’s core message, drawing parallels to Voltaire’s quote about life’s preciousness.
“What Mike’s screenplay and what Stephen King’s story describes so beautifully is the magic of those small moments in our lives which will become the brightest stars in our memories in the last hours of our lives.” Hiddleston articulated how Chuck, outwardly a “gray man in the gray suit,” harbors an inner dancer, symbolizing the “infinite connections, memories, experiences, and possibilities” within every individual.
Mark Hamill Can Relate To The Advice His Character Gives A Young Chuck

Mark Hamill plays Chuck’s grandfather, who is very important to him in his younger years. He helps to shape who Chuck becomes later in life. Hamill can relate, saying her really resonated with his role’s advice to pursue stable careers over artistic dreams.
“It was relatable because I remember telling my parents what I wanted to do. And they said, ‘You’re out of your mind.‘” Hamill shared his own unwavering childhood ambition to work in entertainment, from seeing King Kong to discovering voice actors for cartoons.
Hamill also shed light on his isolated filming experience, working primarily with Mia Sara and Benjamin Pajak (the younger actor playing Chuck in Act One), only meeting his other co-stars at the film’s wrap.
The Life Of Chuck Cast Was Drawn To The Emotional Script

Benjamin Pajak makes a memorable impression with his dance moves and emotional depth in this film, stealing most of the show if we are being honest. It is hard to believe that this is his first major film.
“It was my first really professional film opportunity, so I didn’t know much going into it. But Mike [Flanagan] and Mark [Hamill] and everyone were really there to help me through it, and the dancing. Mandy was amazing helping me through it,” he revealed. Pajak explains that he went to set to watch Tom Hiddleston dance so that he could incorporate some of his mannerisms into his dancing scenes, allowing the audience to fully believe that they are the same person.
His professionalism and joy on set were notably praised by Kate Siegel, who plays his teacher, Miss Richards. Siegel emphasized the profound message her character delivers: “Each person is entirely insignificant and each person is the most important person in the universe. And that is the birth of compassion.”
Karen Gillan, who portrays a resilient nurse facing the world’s end, spoke about drawing on personal experience for her role. “I had a baby six months ago, and just going through the newborn period, I’m like kinda wish I filmed this after that… you just have to keep on going because somebody’s relying on you. You can’t stop.”
Chiwetel Ejiofor reflected, “I think it just felt like a really interesting way to start the story and to start talking about this character. I think that was what was so rich in the script as well. You really immediately felt reading it, the sense of what it was talking to, what it was talking to emotionally and philosophically.”
