The Union is a spy-thriller with a fun and romantic twist in which stars Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry absolutely shine.
Netflix’s The Union follows Mike (Mark Wahlberg), a construction worker whose life is suddenly thrown for a loop when his high school sweetheart Roxane (Halle Berry) recruits him for an intelligence mission. While spy-thriller is certainly the main genre of the movie, it also delivers on humor and heart, working largely in part due to the wonderful chemistry between Wahlberg and Berry.
One of my favorite things about this film is seeing the usual dynamics flipped on its head. Often the man is the seasoned agent and the woman is the one trying to learn the ropes. Here, we have Halle Berry perfectly portraying a badass agent who is unafraid to get her hands dirty. She knows what she is doing, and she is damn good at it.
Mark plays a blue collar man who is happy to do whatever it takes to get closer to Roxanne. She walked out of his life years ago and part of him has been waiting for her to walk back into it. She is the one that got away and if he has to risk his life to get her back, he will.
The way these two interact with each other – from the cute little quips to the genuine concern for each other’s well being – is a complete joy to watch on screen. It is clear that Mark and Halle are good friends, and comfortable with each other, in real life. That truly translates to the screen.
The story itself is easy to follow and just as easy to relate to. Mike does not realize his true potential but Roxanne is there to help him along the way. She pushes him when he needs to be pushed – a place that most of us have been in our lives.
The Union features some great action sequences that are also a lot of fun to watch. There is a mystery weaved into the story which, if I am being honest, was the only low point for me. The twist was too much on the predictabel side for me, however, there were outside events that could have factored into that – I am staying vague so as to not ruin it for anyone else.
Still, I had a really fun time watching this movie. The action, the drama, the humor, and the chemistry between Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry makes this a great streaming choice. There is a lot to love about The Union. Fans of both Berry and Wahlberg will be thrilled to see them in action in this movie.
The Union comes exclusively to Netflix on August 16th. It is an entertaining spy thriller that delivers high-stakes action sequences, fun comedic moments, and even a bit of romance. You don’t want to miss it.
