Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continues right where Mutant Mayhem left off, following the brothers as they make their way through NYC.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was a massive hit. Thankfully fans do not have to wait until a follow up film to discover what the brothers are up to. Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles picks up after the events of the movie, and details the life of the brothers are they try to navigate being teenagers out in the world, and life as crimefighters in the big apple.
The animation style is the same and the voice actors return, making this series truly feel like a continuation of the movie. That is part of the reason that it works as well as it does. There is no need to introduce audiences to this version of the turtles, but if you missed the movie (how dare you), have no fear because there is a brief recap at the start of the first episode.
One of the most unique things about Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is that it isn’t long before the brothers all get separated. As discussed many times during the press tour for Mutant Mayhem, Micah Abbey (Donatello), Shamon Brown Jr. (Michelangelo), Nicolas Cantu (Leonardo), and Brady Noon (Raphael) were in the recording booth together. This is rare on an animated project nowadays, but this was a brilliant move and allowed their interactions to feel real and true.
That, coupled with the fact that they are actual teenagers, allows fans to see the turtles as teenagers — I mean, it is right there in the name, so it is about time that is what we get. But now that, in this series, the boys are not with each other, and end up paired up with other fun and exciting characters, fans are treated to something new. This also means that the actors did not record together.
Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is packed with incredible action sequences, while also delivering some truly grounded moments. This series explores the boys as teenagers, and we can all remember how difficult that is. Put having to fight crime on top of that, and there they certainly struggle at times.
The humor hits, the animation is beautiful, and the story is captivating. We hope that we get to see this version of the turtles for a long to come. Thankfully there is already a second movie in the works.
