Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One Review

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One is jam packed with incredible action, insane stunts, and quite a bit of humor. A must see on the big screen!

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One Review

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One is an absolute blast that will keep fans on the edge of their seats almost the whole way through. This franchise has always been fun and entertaining, but this film seems to lean into the humor more than ever before — and that’s a good thing. Tom Cruise once again proves that he is fantastic at what he does. Rebecca Ferguson is wonderful, as always, and both Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff add a breath of fresh air as welcome additions to the cast.

In the seventh film of the franchise, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) finds himself once again at odds with the United States government. He must team up with his friends and fellow IMF team members to find a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity if it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than the mission — not even the lives of those he cares about most.

Filled With Epic Action Sequences

The Mission: Impossible franchise is synonymous with insane, off the wall, incredible stunts, and it is no different with this one. Tom Cruise never shies away from doing his own stunts, making it very clear how much of a thrill seeker he is. If you watched the trailer for Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One, you know about the motorcycle stunt that he pulls off. It is definitely a key moment in the movie, however there are plenty of other stunts sprinkled throughout the two and a half hour long movie.

There is another franchise whose most recent movie features a train stunt sequence, but it pales in comparison to the one in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One. This scene just keeps going and going, getting more and more crazy the longer it goes on. Trust me when I say, this is a good thing. It will have you on the edge of your seat the entire way through. Tom Cruise proves he is the best action star currently working, without question.

Fantastic Cast, Overall

Tom Cruise isn’t the only fantastic part of this film though, the rest of the returning cast are great as well. Rebecca Ferguson might not have as much screen time as she has in the past, but when she is on screen, she is a commanding presence. Same goes for Vanessa Kirby, who plays The White Widow. She absolutely steals her scenes, in particular her bit on the train. To dive into why would be a little bit too spoilery, but you will know what I am talking about when you see it.

Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames deliver a lot of the comedic relief this time around, although they hold their own during some of the stunts as well. It is a joy to see them back on the big screen with Tom Cruise.

But the cast isn’t only full of returnees, there are a couple of newcomers as well. Hayley Atwell hits every emotional beat perfectly. She can do it all. Humor, action, and heart, her role as Grace is a standout, even next to Tom Cruise. Pom Klementieff is another welcome addition to the cast. She shows that she is a badass, but just like Hayley, she slips some heart in there too.

Does Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One End On A Cliffhanger?

While Part One is clearly setting up for the next one, it also delivers story wise. What I mean by this is it feels warranted. It feels like there was a part of the story completed. So while Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One is the first part of a longer plot, it still offers a bit of closure. Yes, it ends on a cliffhanger, however it isn’t one that will make viewers angry, feeling as if they were cheated out of a story.

As it is, the movie is two and a half hours long, but the runtime is never really felt. It flies by thanks to the witty exchanges and epic action sequences. This is an absolute must see on the big screen. You do not want to miss it in theaters this summer.

Do You Need To Have Seen The Other Mission: Impossible Movies To Understand Dead Reckoning Part One?

While you don’t need to have seen the other Mission: Impossible movies for Dead Reckoning Part One to make sense, it will certainly improve your viewing experience. I get it though, this movie is the seventh in a major franchise and due to be one of the biggest summer blockbusters. It might be hard to catch up before watching so to that I will say go ahead and see this one in theaters, on the biggest screen possible, and then watch the others after.

This movie does a great job at giving you all of the information you need in order to enjoy it, without spoiling the previous films for you.

Overall Thoughts

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One absolutely begs to be seen on the biggest screen possible. It is filled with incredible action sequences, epic stunts, a heartwarming story, and even quite a bit of humor. Probably the funniest of the franchise it tries hard to ensure that you have a good time at the movies.

Viewers will be on the edge of their seats while taking it all in, and thinking to themselves how Tom Cruise is the greatest action hero of our time. Being a part one, it could have easily felt like a waste of time and energy, but it doesn’t. While we can’t say for sure if there will be payoffs to all of the set ups yet, the odds are in our favor.
