The Crossover is a new Disney+ series based off books of the same name. It is unafraid to tackle some heavy topics, like ADHD, while still providing a fun and entertaining time. It is a great family series that is sure to spark important conversations.

During these exclusive interviews, the cast all agrees that it was the story that drew them to want to be a part of it all. Most say that they had never seen anything like this before, with a combination of poetry and vivid visuals, while others claim it was also their love of the books that made them want to be involved.

    Family Dynamic

The family dynamic of the series is one of the best things about it. Sabrina Revelle (Crystal Bell) explains that her character really balances work-mom life. She is the Principal of the school that her kids go to, which makes it that much more difficult. She teases one scene where she plays mom and Principal in the same cut, that comes early in season one. “I was very, very vocal about having a balance between her and Chuck. Wanting that to be more of a partnership because we are both working.”

Derek Luke (Chuck Bell) adds “We’ve been on this idea about team. I remember my mom’s words, personally, me and my brother, we would laugh about it today about how my mom was preparing us for marriage as a kid. And so maybe one of the notes is, for young men, how important choosing the right partner is.”

    Friends In Real Life

The relationships on screen really shine through in The Crossover. All of the kids said that they had a great time hanging out off set as well. They even joke that, since this was the first series regular jobs, they weren’t sure if they were supposed to get along this well, or if it was normal.

Deja Cruz (Maya) exclaims that it was really cool because they were in a whole new state. “We were able to explore the state together and create relationships through that. And I mean, if it was dinner, lunch, breakfast, whatever it was movie night, we were hanging out the whole time.”

Skyla I’Lece (Alexis) adds that all the friendships seen on screen are natural and real. “We don’t have too many scenes where there’s all five of us together. So when we do get together it is so much fun, and the energy is so vibrant and amazing.”

Amir O’Neil (JB aka Jordan) reveals that he and Jalyn Hall (Filthy aka Josh) actually knew each other prior to filming. “We had already hung out a few times. But when we got the audition, and when we got the part, we had a lot of time to spend together. We had to do training, but also just us hanging out on our own.” He says they instantly clicked, and Jalyn agrees.

    About The Crossover

Based on the critically-acclaimed best-selling novel in-verse by Kwame Alexander, “The Crossover” introduces teen brothers Josh and Jordan Bell, widely considered basketball phenoms.

Through his lyrical poetry, an adult version of Josh, aka Filthy McNasty, narrates the story of he and his brother’s coming of age, on and off the court, as their former professional basketball player father adjusts to life after basketball, and their mother finally pursues lifelong dreams of her own.

The Crossover is streaming on Disney+ now.
