Creating MODOK For Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania filmmakers explain the decision to use MODOK and his creation for the MCU.

Bringing MODOK (M.O.D.O.K.) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an exciting move but comic book fans know exactly how difficult this would be to pull off. He is a literal giant floating head, with tiny arms and legs. He needs a chair to carry himself around because his little legs cannot support the weight of that massive noggin. He is a strange and bizarre character, but also a lot of fun.

During the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania press conference, the filmmakers discuss his creation, as well as knowing why this was the right place and time to bring him in.

Director Peyton Reed admits that it was a personal thrill for him to have M.O.D.O.K. associated with his film. “I was a kid who spent a lot of my childhood alone in a room reading Marvel Comics and M.O.D.O.K. was always this insane character. He’s grotesque. He’s a giant head that has been turned into a Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing and that was intriguing.”

He goes on to say that they started talking about if there was a place for him in the MCU at all, and then specifically if they would be able to bring him to live action in Ant-Man and how could they do that. What would he look like?

Producer Stephen Broussard concurs that MODOK is indeed a very odd character, to say the least. “It loomed large in our imagination of how and if we could pull that off. It felt like a challenge, going back years here at Marvel. And we hit on an idea that we were excited about.” Broussard doesn’t want to go into too much more detail, in order to preserve spoilers, but he says that it was the right time to bring MODOK to the big screen and is thrilled with how he turned out.
