WARNING: SPOILERS FOR OBI-WAN KENOBI EPISODE 3

Like I said – this might just be one of the best episodes of Star Wars Television we have ever had and overall I think this show has potential to be the best thus far. Right out of the gate we see Obi-Wan deal with basically the demons of his past. We hear Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin, and other essential characters from Obi-Wan’s past as he deals with the fact that Anakin is still alive.

Then we get Darth Vader himself… as someone who isn’t a fan of what Disney+ is doing with the 6 episode format of TV, this show might just change my mind because the pacing is near perfect. Seeing Vader, and this much of him, gets me so excited for the second half of the show as they aren’t waiting for a big grand reveal… He is HERE and he isn’t messing around. At the end of the episode we get the big first duel between the two but before that we have a lot of slower parts to this episode, and these ended up being my least favorite parts.

Leia and Obi-Wan travel along the desert, trying to get to safety, and Obi-Wan has this vision of Anakin standing in the distance and though I loved that moment, the entirety of Leia and Obi-Wan traveling and talking with the stormtroopers wasn’t too interesting to me. I don’t think it was bad but if given the choice I would much rather watch Darth Vader than Obi-Wan talking to some stormtroopers.

I will say though, when Obi-Wan called Leia the wrong name, and said she reminded him of her mother, that one conversation alone built a lot of character up for him in such a short time which I could really appreciate.

After that Fred, their driver, finds them pretty suspicious so he takes them to a stormtroopers check-in station and Obi-Wan defeats all of them with his blaster. Though he still ends up getting “caught”, the fight itself was pretty fun and in general the action in the show so far has been great, and only got better as the episode went on.

Skipping ahead a little we finally see more Darth Vader in action. He ravages through a town as Obi-Wan watches from the shadows and it once again shows just how menacing Darth Vader really is. Leia escapes through a underground tunnel as Obi-Wan is confronted by Vader in an open desert. Vader ignites his saber, and at this moment I jumped from my seat because I knew exactly what was going to happen.

Obi-Wan runs for his life, which I was not expecting, but he ignites his saber and then we get the first duel. This fight was absolutely awesome. We saw Vader full of rage and Obi-Wan just fighting for his life and at the end Vader gets Obi-Wan in a force-choke and ignites a fire with his saber, burning Obi-Wan, making him feel the same pain as he had to in Revenge of the Sith. We see Leia escape the tunnel but Third Sister is there waiting for her at the exit – and the episode ends there.

Quite and abrupt ending but I thought it really worked as this episode was packed from start to finish, it definitely has slower moments but as an overall episode it works perfectly.

    Rating: 4 out of 5
