The big summer more preview from Mama’s Geeky details the films that are sure to be the biggest hits in theaters this summer!

The Big Summer Movie Preview 2022
Well, will you look at that. As if from nowhere, summer is upon us! And, as such, it feels like the perfect time to look forward to a movie season chock full of big budgets and good times.
For obvious reasons, the past couple of summers have been rough for the film industry. Scarred by delays, drama, and box office flops, the entire movie landscape has taken a serious pandemic pummeling, yet the green shoots of recovery are there, so this promises to be a huge summer for everyone involved as cinema strives to prove that it remains as big a draw as ever.
We’ve got huge studio franchises, we’ve got tiny indie releases, and we’ve got just about everything in between coming up over the next few months, so now feels as good a time as any to take stock and run-down my most anticipated movies of summer 2022.

MEN
And where better to start than an absolutely bonkers looking Alex Garland joint.
Relatively new to the directing game, Garland has nonetheless proved himself a rare filmmaking talent that offers up mind-melting, thought-provoking, genre-bending cinema unlike anything else out there.
Ex-Machina and Annihilation are among my favorite sci-fi films of the last decade, and while Men looks like a definitive step into more horror territory, with the wonderful Jessie Buckley and an intensely unnerving Rory Kinnear in tow, there’s absolutely no reason to believe that Garland’s hot streak is about to end any time soon.

JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION
Let’s not mess about here. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was terrible. After a promising start, the fifth instalment in the Jurassic Park franchise swiftly proved itself to be the worst thing the series has ever produced, which is saying something, considering some of the rubbish that preceded it.
So, here we are with the sixth – and hopefully final – film in the Jurassic series, and with talons crossed, let’s hope that they go out on a high.
With dinosaurs now dominating the planet and with Jurassic originals Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum brought back into the fold, the signs are certainly promising that this will at least be an exciting final bow for the franchise Spielberg built.

LIGHTYEAR
My word, it feels like an absolute age since we last saw a Pixar film on the big screen. For various reasons, every Pixar effort since Soul has bypassed theatrical release and been unceremoniously dumped onto Disney+. Until now, that is.
After such an extended absence, Lightyear marks Pixar’s glorious return to cinemas, and what a way to do it. Telling the origin story of the much-loved Buzz Lightyear toy, Lightyear promises to be an epic sci-fi adventure tailormade for the big screen, and as a (sort of) Toy Story spin-off/prequel, not to mention having Chris Evans on voice duties, you just know it’s going to be the big box office hit Pixar badly needs after being side-lined for way too long.

THE BLACK PHONE
As one of those films that comes out of nowhere, I knew next to nothing about The Black Phone until its first trailer dropped, but now I’ll happily admit that I’m a little bit obsessed with it.
Every summer season needs a good horror to balance out the onslaught of big budget blockbusters, and it looks like The Black Phone is just that horror. With Ethan Hawke in the creepiest form of his career and with an intensely unsettling premise, Scott Derrickson’s latest offering feels like it could very well be this summer’s big horror hit.

ELVIS
Being honest, I’m not the biggest Elvis fan going, and big screen biopics can always be a bit hit and miss, however, there’s something about Elvis that has me very intrigued.
Looks-wise, Baz Luhrmann appears to be putting his signature flare on the King’s story, which would be enough on its own for the film to me worth a watch, but throw in Austin Butler, who seems to be nailing the essence of Elvis and the always welcome presence of Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker and this one could very well leave audiences all shook up.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER
Well, who’d have thought Thor would be the first Avenger to get a quadrilogy?
Since his debut eleven years ago, it’s been a bumpy old road for the God of Thunder but considering the incredible job Ragnarok did in giving Thor a new lease of life, and considering where Avengers: Endgame left the character, the opportunity to continue Thor’s story was just too good to pass up.
So here we are, four solo films on and Taika Waititi is back to lend his distinct style to what will undoubtedly be a wild ride across the realms, as Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman join forces once again to take on an intensely creepy looking Christian Bale.

NOPE
It cannot be understated just how big a moment Get Out was. For horror, for its message, for Daniel Kaluuya, and for Jordan Peele himself, the film was huge.
Since that moment, Peele has been on one hell of a roll, swiftly becoming not only one of the most creative and bankable directors in Hollywood, but also one of the most unpredictable.
True to form, Nope looks both unique and utterly bonkers, and even after watching the trailer, I have absolutely no idea what this film is, and that alone makes it among my most anticipated movies of the year, let alone the summer.

BULLET TRAIN
Man, I miss Brad Pitt movies. Taking a back seat to concentrate on production duties, Pitt has stepped away from the camera quite significantly of late, and it’s a crying shame because the man is still very much the scene-stealing star he’s always been.
Considering this, the fact alone that Bullet Train marks Pitt’s first starring role in three years is truly something to celebrate but add in a fun train-centric concept and some incredible looking action from John Wick director David Leitch and this one sounds like a hell of a ride.
In cinemas: 29 July (UK) / 5 August (US)
There you have it for the big summer movie preview. Be sure to head to theaters to see all these films on the big screen.
