Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness First Reactions
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had its first press screenings today, as well as the world premiere. Multiverse of Madness first reactions are flooding in, and the majority of them are quite positive for the most part. Others suggest the general audience will be mixed. This is Marvel’s first movie that really dives into the horror elements, which is fitting with a Director like Sam Raimi.
Many reactions praise Elizabeth Olsen for her incredible performance as Wanda Maximoff, while some say that she did a great job, but Marvel dropped the ball with her character.
As for newcomer America Chavez? Most reactions are saying she was not done the justice she deserves, but that Xochitl Gomez steals all of her scenes and is a great addition to the MCU.
Several reactions point out that the script is lacking, and that there are issues with several character arcs, but especially Wanda’s. She is a very powerful and important person in the comic books, so hopefully this comes through.
It seems this is very much a Sam Raimi film — everyone knows he has a unique style it when it comes to films. Massive action scenes, stunning visuals, and jump scares. It’s creepy, and weird — which Marvel did warn us all of.
Yes, there are cameos. Some say too many, some say not enough. Others call is just fan service, and that they don’t make the movie a good movie.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 has been dark and heavy so far — reactions are saying that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness fits right in with that theme — for better or worse.
Doctor Strange #MultiverseOfMadness has Sam Raimi's signature 'horror' style all over it. It is terrifying, dark, savage, and never lets up from start to finish! Elizabeth Olsen dominates onscreen. I even caught that Evil Dead throw back, Sam. Well played. #DoctorStrange pic.twitter.com/DJqAeppGcY

My head is spinning. #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness exceeded my expectations. Fast paced & drops you right into the action. Great way of showing the multiverse. Magic, spells, fight scene, elements of horror are all in this movie. See it ASAP and then see it again ASAP.

#DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness is madness in the most Marvel way possible — a chaos magic ride full of emotion, surprises, and epic action. And Elizabeth Olsen fully embracing her Scarlet Witch era after all these years is a MOMENT. 🙌🏻

Sam Raimi nailed the horror vibe. Nailed it! There were truly some gruesome parts and creepy as hell parts. Marvel just took it up a notch with #DoctorStrangeMultiverseOfMadness #DoctorStrange #MultiverseOfMadness

While Phase 4 has been my favorite of the MCU, I was let down by #DoctorStrangeMultiverseOfMadness. Cumberbatch and Olsen are both great, but Wanda’s character arc doesn’t make much sense and left me feeling like Marvel hasn’t actually fixed their female character problem. pic.twitter.com/upn3EpjdgB

DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS was a disappointing entry in the MCU for me. Sam Raimi’s love of horror & imaginative camerawork are present but they often clash with Marvel’s secure style. Lots of underwhelming writing decisions are likely going to divide the fandom. pic.twitter.com/drm22GEpWt

I’ve got a lot to say about #MultiverseOfMadness and I will in my review tomorrow, but honestly, this might be one of the worst scripts in MCU history.

Ultimately wasn't a big fan of #DoctorStrange in the #MultiverseOfMadness, but one thing's for sure: it's a stylistic buffet. Started off rather tame, but it got crazier as it went on. It had some laughs, fun visuals, and an entertaining score. pic.twitter.com/wcJZJfEwvN

Sent my dad to the Melbourne screening of #DoctorStrange #MultiverseOfMadness: “Was glad I avoided social media – it was a huge surprise. Action started from the get go. Full of surprises & a few unexpected cameos. Wasn’t a huge Doctor Strange fan until this. Loved every minute.” pic.twitter.com/vfWaRK9lda

#DoctorStrangeIntheMultiverseofMadness was soooooo much fun. I definitely screamed at several moments from pure excitement. Movie was way more gory than any Marvel movie. Sam Raimi definitely brought the horror. Seeing it again this weekend.

I really can’t wait to see #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness again. There’s a lot going on and the action starts right away. I say this with only love and positive connotations: this movie is really fucking weird and creepy. And that’s exactly what it should have been.

Elizabeth Olsen is the best part of #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness. I would say this is one of her best performances, but let's be real, Olsen is always at the top of her game. Love the additional layers she unpacks with Wanda here & def rooted for her the whole film. pic.twitter.com/A2TcYBHLCd

#DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness is the blend of MCU accessibility and Raimi’s Evil Dead 2 that I didn’t know that I needed. Starts off w/ the familiar MCU tone, but adds a lot more horror and weird in the back half. I thoroughly enjoyed it. pic.twitter.com/QqXxgW2YNq

#DoctorStrangeintheMultiverseofMadness is absolutely nuts. Absolutely mad you might say. Hardcore fans are going to bug. Casual fans are gonna go WTF am I watching? But don’t know if anyone will deny it’s Sam Raimi to the max, and Elizabeth Olsen owns it from start to finish.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is VICIOUS.
The violent delights have violent ends, and it’s a real thrill to watch Sam Raimi’s horror fester.
The most I’ve ever covered my mouth and gasped “oh s***” during an MCU film.#DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness

#DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness packs a ton of excitement into 2 hrs #AmericaChavez is a standout and her chemistry with #DoctorStrange is a ton of fun! I would have liked more time to develop #Wanda but Elizabeth Olsen is fantastic! Raimi went full throttle with horror! pic.twitter.com/6JbeGGQmy7

That Marvel fatigue was starting to set in but #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness pulled me right back into the fold. It jams in a lot cohesively but could have been longer. Xochitl Gomez stole every scene for me as America Chavez. pic.twitter.com/4VC8XBVDtP

#DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness is a superb entry in the MCU canon. Although the movie has a shaky start, Raimi deftly weaves in the multiversal aspect into the story by the second act. Wanda's motivations are well realised and authentic. Rachel McAdams is a standout. pic.twitter.com/JGbLJ3Nfir

Had the honor of watching #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness today. Marvel was never as deep as this film, that has one of the action scenes of the entire franchise. Olsen might be the MVP. Her performance would give her an Oscar, if the Academy was less conservative.👇 pic.twitter.com/yGlSzJDRPo

#DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness is weird AF & incredibly heartbreaking. Moments of delight & craziness. Its #SamRaimi @ his fullest. #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness really lives up to the name! It’s not scary but it has a delightfully wicked time with every horror trope in the book. I laughed and screamed and had such a fun time.

Sadly #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness is a disappointing entry into the #MCU .
What I feared about #SamRaimi directing this movie came true. He brought his stuck in the past 1990s approach to a 2022 film and it’s irritatingly out of step with what… pic.twitter.com/sYTIGaEBtK

Sam Raimi’s #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness is undeniably a film. Brimming with a score, cinematography, and performances, it’s a movie made by a team of filmmakers that can irrefutably be described as existent. Truly one of the films 2022 has to offer.
— Thomas Elliott Griffiths (@ThomasElliottG) May 3, 2022
#DoctorStrange #MultiverseOfMadness is a Sam Raimi movie in and out… horrific, brutal, shocking, & even scary at times. The film builds on each minute it gives & never lets up even at the very end. Elizabeth Olsen is even better than she was in WANDAVISION. pic.twitter.com/Z8jDkcrKGO

I loved "Multiverse of Madness"!
It is as much an MCU movie as it is a Sam Raimi movie.
There are elements of horror, drama and straight up COSMIC GOODNESS that left my jaw on the ground!

People’s opinions on #MultiverseOfMadness are gonna be all over the place but it’s so so so much fun. Great (terrifying) sequences at times and insane humor and camp that only Sam Raimi can pull off. ONE OF MY FAVORITE MARVEL THIRD ACTS! Elizabeth Olsen is ROYALTY. Bow down 🤲🏼👑 pic.twitter.com/gZuxJlLRMK

#DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness is definitely a Sam Raimi movie. There is a lot of horror elements in it and his fingerprints are all over it. That said, the story isn’t all that interesting and there is way too much fan service. Sadly, cameos don’t make a good movie.

#DoctorStrange Multiverse of Madness was a comic book fever dream. This is by far the Best Directed MCU film. Sam Raimi awed me with his incredible style and visual flare. The action set pieces blew me away & Elizabeth Olsen's #ScarlettWitch was a force to be reckon with. pic.twitter.com/PrbmnwNeeo

#MultiverseOfMadness is a Sam Raimi movie first and an MCU movie second. The visuals are impressive, the score from Danny Elfman elevated the action scenes, and Raimi delivered on the horror elements. Olsen and Cumberbatch are excellent in this. The script is the only issue. pic.twitter.com/Ylh6O6eNkY

#DoctorStrange #MultiverseOfMadness has fun playing around with the weird and scariness of the multiverse, and then dares to destroy all of your hopes and dreams of cameos and surprises in a snap.
