Upload Season 2 Review: Goes Deeper Into…Everything

Upload Season 2 explores invasion of privacy, as well as continues to touch on corporate greed — all while sticking to being a hilarious comedy.

upload season 2 review

Prime Video’s Upload is a show that has been flying under the radar a bit, but is something that Science Fiction fans around the world love. In a not too distant future after a human dies, they can upload their memories, personality, and while, pretty much everything about themselves except for their physical body, to a network — if they have the money to do so of course. This show is completely unafraid to touch on all of the issues presented with that, including corporate greed and invasion of privacy.

It is the perfect combination of comedy, sci-fi, and drama — and with only thirty minute long episodes, it is a very quick and fun binge. It took a while, but Upload Season 2 is finally coming to Prime Video, and it was most definitely worth the wait.

In Upload season 1 Nathan (Robbie Amell) was uploaded by his rich girlfriend Ingrid (Allegra Edwards) after his untimely death, which he eventually discovers was a murder. While living in Lakeview, the best after life facility money can buy, he falls pretty hard for his angel Nora (Andy Allo). The two work together to restore his missing memories and it becomes clear that Ingrid’s father was the one that had Nathan killed — probably because he was working on code for a program that would be free for everyone to upload to when they pass.

Upload season 2 picks up where season 1 left off — Ingrid has uploaded for Nathan in order to try to save their crumbling relationship. Meanwhile Nora has gone off the grid after he broke her heart, and is now working with The Ludds, who are an anti-tech group that has some not so great plans for Lakeview. Weave in some absolutely hilarious side plots that involve digital babies, naughty dreams, and dinner parties — and season 2 proves Upload is back and here to stay.

upload season 2 review

This season explores all sorts of heavy issues, but it does so in a way that is a lot of fun, and absolutely hilarious. It is a bit strange to see Nora and Nathan so estranged, especially for those who were rooting for them last season, but it is an understandable plot point that is needed to propel the story forward.

The supporting characters pick up a lot of the slack this season, and really bring their A-game, making them some of the more interesting story lines. Kevin Bigley as Luke feels like he takes on an even bigger role this season, and it is fun to follow his relationship with Nathan, as well as with his angel Aleesha. Let’s just say his dreams reveal how he really feels about her. Throw Lucy (Andrea Rosen) in the mix and it makes for a great lust triangle.

Ingrid is a much bigger part of this season as well, and is part of a very surprising twist. The girl has some secrets to hide and somehow she will steal viewers’ hearts in the process of dealing with them.

The stand out episode this season is easily the family day episode. Bringing in the digital baby aspect is brilliant, and makes for a lot of fun. But the fact that there are such ridiculous hijinks going on during this episode, but also a lot of important ties to the main story line. A great balance, and an absolute blast of an episode.

upload season 2 review ai guy

I love seeing characters that were once background characters stepping more into the spotlight in season 2 — particularly the AI guy. He has an important role this season and it is fantastic watching this character grow.

When the seventh and final episode comes to an end, it is a complete shock. Upload season 2 ends in a massive cliffhanger, but in a way that feels like there must be another episode coming next. There is no way that this show can end this way, so there has to be a season 3 coming or fans will riot. Because of this, the season isn’t completely cohesive, and that is a bit frustrating.

About Upload Season 2

Upload is a sci-fi comedy series from Emmy Award-winning writer Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation), set in a technologically advanced future where hologram phones, 3D food printers and automated grocery stores are the norm. Most uniquely, humans can choose to be “uploaded” into a virtual afterlife.

In Upload Season Two, Nathan is at a crossroads in his (after) life… his ex-girlfriend Ingrid has unexpectedly arrived to Lakeview hoping to strengthen their relationship, but his heart still secretly yearns for his customer service angel Nora. Meanwhile Nora is off the grid and involved with the anti-tech rebel group “The Ludds.”

Season Two is packed with new near-future concepts, including Lakeview’s newest in-app digital baby program called, “prototykes,” and other satirical glimpses of the technological advances and headaches to come.

Upload season 2 hits Prime Video on March 11.
