Warning: Spoilers for DC’s Stargirl Season 2 Episode 2.

This episode opens up with Cindy’s stepmom dancing around the kitchen, drinking wine, and smashing things. She is visibly very happy to have her husband and Cindy out of her life since they were both controlling and manipulative. Her happiness ends when Cindy returns home, with Eclipso’s gem of course. She holds it up saying that diamonds are a girls best friend, and it glints in her mother’s eye as she gets a blank look on her face.

Later in the episode, while Cindy’s stepmom is cleaning up the mess that she made at the start of the episode, she hears “You’ll never escape her” in her head, which seems to be Eclipso talking to her about Cindy. It seems likely that he is trying to urge her to do something so he can feed on her dark side. Even later on, he straight up tells her to murder Cindy if she wants her old life back.

Jade Stargirl season 2

Jenny (AKA Jade)

Then across the screen is Milwaukee, Wisconsin, The Ordway Home For Children, Six Days Ago, where we see Jenny, Green Lantern’s daughter, being told to leave. It seems that younger children need a home, and since it is her birthday and she is no longer a child, there is just no room for her anymore. As she is leaving she is given a small that was left for her by child services. Inside is a toy car that says “todd” on the bottom and the Green Lantern ring, As she holds it up, her eyes flash green. It then turns green and floats in front of her, before going onto her hand and leading her — straight to Blue Valley.

Cut to the aftermath of the fight between her and Courtney in the Whitmore’s house, and Jenny says that the Green Lantern belongs to her father and that is why she came. She gives her fathers name, Alan Scott, a name that Pat immediately recognizes. She also recognizes Pat’s name, and says that he is a legend. Jenny asks for his help in learning how to use the ring. Viewers learn that Jenny has a brother, but we don’t know much about him — he could be dead or missing.

Courtney Doesn’t Trust Jenny

Barbara makes Courtney sleep on the couch and gives Jenny her room for the night. Courtney is visibly nervous about Jenny, and isn’t sure that she is who she says she is. When she asks Pat about it, he admits that the JSA never spoke about their children in order to protect them, but that he knew who had kids. The fact that ring works for her seems to be a good hint as well, however Courtney points out that she isn’t Starman’s daughter but yet the Cosmic Staff works for her.

in the morning Jenny has fixed the table and made everyone a delicious pancake breakfast, something that Courtney is unhappy about. She still doesn’t trust her at all. Because she failed some of her classes she is off to summer school while Pat and Jenny try to get the lantern working.

Summer School

Courtney shows up to summer school to find that even though Yolanda got straight A’s, her parents enrolled her in summer school to ensure she stays out of trouble. Also in her class is someone that Cindy has her sights set on for the ISA, Isaac Bowin, son of The Fiddler. Rick is also supposed to be in class but is not there.

The show cuts to him bringing pizzas to the same place in the woods that he brought the chicken too. The chicken is gone, but the buckets remain. Beth calls him while he is out and tells him that a new superhero is in town. Back in the woods there is a growl, it seems Solomon Grundy is living there after all.

Yolanda and Courtney discuss Jenny, and how Courtney doesn’t trust her at all. This is because some people in town seem to lie about who they really are, which is of course a reference to the children of the ISA she dealt with last season. It also seems that she is jealous of Jenny not only immediately clicking with Pat, but also about the fact that she is a superhero’s daughter, where Courtney is not.

The Green Lantern

Back at his garage, Zeek has added that flame thrower to S.T.R.I.P.E., and it is actually really cool. Pat thanks him, before sending him away so that he and Jenny can get to work on the lantern. When he asks about the ring, he finds it odd that it worked without charging, remembering that Alan had to change it every day in order for it to work. He notes that perhaps he is remembering wrong and as he tries to work on the lantern, Jenny’s eyes turn green and his tools get knocked away.

Par realizes that she must be feeling anxious as he recalls that the power would react to Alan’s emotions. He explains this to her, and also tells her that the ring can form whatever she is thinking about. She tries this out and the first thing she creates is a version of that toy car that he dad left to her.

When Courtney and Yolanda get to the garage after school, there seems to be a JSA meeting without her and she is very upset. She doesn’t like that Jenny came bursting in the house rather than knocking and asking about the lantern. She says this, and that she didn’t think they should have told her about the team, causing Jenny to run out of the room, and her friends all follow her.

Richard Swift

Blue Valley is filling up with new heroes and villains, as Richard Swift, AKA The Shade, comes to town and meets with Barbara. He tells her that he is a stage magic collector and would love to purchase the belongings of the late William Zarick, AKA The Wizard. She knows him to be a member of the ISA at this point, and seems a little suspicious of Richard, but says that she will find out if the committee wishes to sell the items or not.

Barbara calls Pat, asking him to check out Richard because it all seems off to her. She told Pat where to find Richard — at the diner she recommended for a good cup of tea. He joins Richard in the booth saying that he doesn’t think he knows him yet. He tries to get some information out him, but sees the kids running by outside, and decides to go after them.

At the end of the episode Pat is looking through The Shade’s file and realizes that yes, it is Richard Swift. Courtney comes to him to tell him she is putting Stargirl second, but when he tells her that The Shade is the last unaccounted for member of the ISA and that he is in Blue Valley, she cannot wait to get her staff and see what she can do to stop him.

Courtney & Jenny

After a talk with Pat, Courtney admits that he biggest issue with Jenny is jealousy. She feels that Jenny is perfect, powerful, and yes, the daughter of a superhero — for real. Courtney decides to apologize to her and explain this, but in doing so, only angers Jenny. She doesn’t feel like she has everything like Courtney does. She just wants to find her brother and was hoping the ring would lead her to him, instead, it brought her to the lantern. She lashes out and knocks it over, causing a massive green light to come from it.

They leave the garage with the lantern, unsure what to do with it. It seems like it is going to explode and they wanted to take it away from people. Pat shows up and reminds Jenny that emotions effect her power, and she is controlling this all. Courtney seems to have a lightbulb go off in her head and says that Jenny IS the lantern. That is why the ring worked when she put it on, because she is charging it. She points out that Jenny could absorb the power of the lantern, before it explodes.

Jenny urges everyone to leave in case it doesn’t work, but they prove they believe in her and show their trust by staying put. Jenny is able to absorb the power, but only for a brief moment before it explodes, knowing the JSA down and causing a large crater in the ground. At first, Jenny is nowhere to be found, but looking up — she is up in the air and glowing green. When Courtney wakes up in the morning, Jenny is already gone.

Eclipso & Cindy

In the final moments of the episode, Cindy comes home and her stepmother attacks her. As she goes for the kill, Eclipso comes out through Cindy and says “sinful human” before sucking her into the gem and feeding off her darkness. Eclipso then leaves Cindy and explains that he feeds off the darkness of humans. She threatens that if he takes over her body like that again, she will put him back in the box. He says that yes, she is the one in control, but it feels like mocking.

Stargirl Season 2 Episode 2 Review

This episode of Stargirl is a major set up for what is to come in the future. Not only do we get an in depth look at Jenny, and see her get her full Green lantern powers, we also get to see Eclipso feed. It is also made clear that while Cindy is using him, he is using her too. The fact that he can just take over her body when he wants to feed is very interesting, and sure to come up again in the future. There is also the addition of The Shade coming into town and the fact that he is looking to get his hands on The Wizard’s items. Surely he is working to put together a new ISA.

As for the effects of the Green Lantern and the ring, they are very similar to those of the Cosmic Staff. The main difference is that the color is green instead of yellow. Other than that the sound and look is near exact. Not necessarily a bad thing, but an observation.

The pacing of Episode 2 is a little off however, and it felt like while we got a lot of information, there wasn’t as much action as Stargirl usually gives us. This can be forgiven however as it is clearly laying the groundwork for the rest of the season.

The project focuses on the character that started executive producer Geoff Johns’ career as a comic book writer when he created her in 1999, lovingly inspired by his late sister, who was killed in a 1996 plane explosion.
