Disney+’s 22 vs. Earth Fun Facts From Director Kevin Nolting

22 vs. Earth is the directorial debut with Pixar Animation for Kevin Nolting, and is an adorable short that gives more insight into Soul 22.

Many people connected with the cynical Soul number 22, voiced by Tina Fey, in Disney and Pixar’s Soul. So much so that now she has her very own short coming to Disney+ called 22 vs. Earth. In an interview with the Director Kevin Nolting, he discusses where this idea came from, what Easter Eggs he snuck in from his favorite film, and more.

This short follows 22 as she puts together a group of innocent souls, hoping they will listen to her and hate Earth, just like she does. it is just 5 minutes long, but a whole ton of fun and absolutely hilarious. It is one of those things that can be watched over and over and never get old, proving there is so much to love about 22. The fact that she is so cynical is something that many people can relate to, but why is she so jaded? That is a little bit of what this short explores.

Getting to know a more about 22, her life before Joe, and why she is the way she is, adds even more depth to the feature film Soul itself. Which is why 22 vs. Earth feels like it could be included in the movie and make sense. Kevin was happy to hear that, and let me know this is actually an idea that came up while working on Soul, which is a project he was lead editor on.

“This was a subject that came up a lot as we were making Soul. In Soul we explore Joe’s life in great detail and we were always talking about, and joking about, what made 22 the way she is.– Kevin Nolting

In one part of the short, 22 names her group of souls “APOCALPYSE” — this is a hilarious acronym that further proves her hatred for Earth. However, this was not the original name in the script – it was “KAOS“. Kevin is a fan of the series Get Smart, and thought this might be a little bit too connected to that for other fans of the show. Plus, Apocalypse Now is one of his favorite movies, and this allowed him to sneak in a soul yelling those words out. He also put in some other Apocalypse Now Easter Eggs — so keep an eye out for them if you are a fan of the film!

Something really fun that the whole team behind 22 vs. Earth did, is come up with the names of the innocent souls that 22 recruits. Kevin said there was a whole list of ideas, and while some of them didn’t work out for legal reasons, they were able to get some good ones. Macaroni came about because someone’s kids love macaroni and cheese, and he was happy to sneak in Zimmy, which is a line from a Bob Dylan song.

With 22 being so lovable and fun, there is a lot more to explore from her past. Perhaps a Disney+ series shorts, maybe featuring her conversations with her other mentors. Kevin says it is not out of the realm of possibility, and he would love to explore it. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed!
