The Expanse Season 5 Episode 7 “Oyedeng” focuses a lot more on Holden and the Roci, while still giving us more on Marco — here is my recap and review!
The previous episode of The Expanse didn’t show much of Holden and the Roci, or Alex and Bobbie, but they make up for it in this episode. Don’t worry, we still get a whole lot of Marco, Filip, and Naomi though. However, Amos is left behind in this episode. Which is alright because we did get a lot of him last episode.
Below is my recap and review for The Expanse Season 5 Episode 7 “Oyedeng”. There will be spoilers of major plot points, so be warned! Read last week’s The Expanse Season 5 Episodes 6 spoiler recap and review to catch up!
Warning: SPOILERS for The Expanse Season 5 Episode 7
This episode starts right off with Marco and Filip talking. Marco says he knows Filip has been spending time with Naomi and is prying about if they have bonded and where his allegiances lie. Marco goes to see Naomi and they discuss why he took Filip from her. He claims it is because he thought that would make her stay and that he always loved her and she has a hold over him.
But something about it just seems shady, and Naomi thinks so too. She says that Holden is everything Marco pretends to be. Despite that, Marco let’s her go free to move about the ship but says that if she tempers with anything on the ship, or takes a hand to anyone, she will go out in the airlock.
The first thing Naomi does is go to see Filip in his room, who seems proud she saved a lot of Belter lives inside the ring. She talks about how she used to have big dreams for Filip and his future, but that now she is worried about all the regret he will have later in life adding “Killing people doesn’t mean you are strong.” Filip gets angry at first, saying he doesn’t need her or Marco.
However, they then have a great moment when Naomi tells Filip she believes him. They hug, Filip cries on her shoulder, and then asks Naomi why she left him. Naomi explains she tried to take Filip away, but Marco found out and hid him from her. She searched for months and finally accepted she wouldn’t find him and that her life was nothing without him. Naomi went down to the docks and into an airlock. She was going to open the door and kill herself when she realized it wouldn’t change Filip’s life. “Walking away was the only choice I had.”
The Roci Finds The Zmeya
When we finally get back on the Roci they still out looking for Zmeya as they follow the flight plan and chase the protomolocule sample. Monica asks what they are going to do with the sample if they find it and Holden and Bull agree they will destroy it. Monica says she put in a message and will know if there is chatter about a hand off.
Holden admits to Bull that he never trusted Fred and was always thinking he was playing an angle. However he admits that he should have trusted him, because he never lied to him. Just then Holden gets a transmission from Alex who says he is on his way to Tycho with Bobbie, mentioning they have a lot to talk about when they get there. Holden notices there isn’t much of a delay, meaning they are close by.
Alex & Bobbie To The Rescue
Alex and Bobbie get a message from Holden really quickly, and they realize they are close by as well, and the Roci must not be on Tycho anymore. Holden explains that there was an attack and they are following the protomolocule sample.
Alex and Bobbie send the ship profiles back to Holden, knowing they could use them in their search for the sample. Holden replies and tells them about how Marco has kidnapped Naomi, and they see her ship is among those profiles they sent. Holden can’t change course now, as the protomolocule is too important, but he asks a favor of Alex. They are happy to help and keep an eye on Naomi, and immediately plot a new course.
Monica and Holden are talking and assume that Marco is likely trading the protomolocule and Courtazer to the Martians for the Navy ships. Finally, the Roci spots the Zmeya! The Zmeya shoots a ton of missiles at them, but they avoid attack. Holden starts to change their plans and decides it best to board them – hoping to see what they know about Naomi. But before he can get any answers, the Zmeya explodes, seemingly blowing itself up.
Noami Breaks (Again)
Filip comes to Marco and asks for his own ship to command. He wants the Belters to know who he is. Marco then goes off, and tells his son he is nothing without him. He mentions all the things Filip has messed up, like not killing Naomi. He says that Filip is his heir and once he is gone, then people will be chanting his name — and only then.
Marco summons Naomi and tells her a devious plan that he has come up with. They are going to use her ship to lure the Roci in, and then they will blow up the Roci, killing her new “family”. Then Naomi can get her wish and leave The Free Navy behind. Marco says that Filip inspired this because he wants the Belt to know he destroyed the infamous Roci.
Filip adds that he knows who she really is now — and that she tried to poison him against his own family. It is unclear if this is really what Filip thinks, or a ruse to keep his father on his side. This is all seemingly too much for Naomi, who goes into an airlock, just like she described she did before.
However, this time she spaces herself, without protection. She did have something in her hand that she injects herself with, and reaches her ship, the Chetzemoka. Seems that she will be doing whatever she can to save Holden and the Roci. In the process, Cyn dies after he goes in the airlock to try to save her.
The Expanse Season 5 Episode 7 “Oyedeng” is one of my favorites of the season because we can see how conflicted Filip is. We learn a lot about Naomi’s past, just as we did with Amos earlier in the season. It seems like everything is starting to come together, and our main characters are able to work with each other against Marco.
The end of this episode had me hoping that Naomi would not break, and I was happy to see that she had a plan when she went out the airlock. Is the protomolocule actually gone though? That is something I wasn’t so sure about.
