LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special Review: Fun For Every Fan

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is a fun addition to the Star Wars universe! There are a lot of laughs, and a lot of fan service.

If you are a Star Wars fan, then you are sure to have a lot of fun watching the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special when it comes to Disney+. There is a lot of fan service, a ridiculous amount of Easter eggs, and don’t even get me started on the humor! As you probably already know my whole family loves Star Wars. We are massive fans of the franchise and to see all of the films tied together in this 46 minute special was truly amazing.

The plot of this special is that Rey, Poe, Finn, Chewbacca, and Rose are celebrating Life Day, now that evil has been vanquished. Rey does not have faith in herself as a master to Finn — yes, she is training Finn to be a Jedi which I LOVED — and seeks guidance in the Jedi books.

She takes BB-8 with her and leaves the rest of the gang to celebrate without her, promising to be back as soon as possible. When she discovers something that will allow her to travel through time and space, she visits some of the best Star Wars events of the past.

Easter Eggs & Fan Service

One thing that I really appreciate about the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is that it knows how to make fun of itself. The entire Star Wars franchise is up for humiliation and they chose some of the best moments to poke fun at. Trust me, if you are a real Star Wars fan, you know there are a lot of things you can laugh at, and this special does a great job at making you do so.

Honestly there are so many Easter Eggs in this special from all of the Star Wars films and I don’t want to ruin them for first time watchers because they are a joy to discover. Perhaps that is an article for another time. There is even a mention of Batuu, the planet guests of Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World and Disneyland visit, which I thought was very clever.

Overall Thoughts

Unfortunately this LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is not a shot for shot remake of the original holiday special, which I think everyone was hoping for. I kid! I kid! I don’t think anyone wanted that to happen.

In all honesty though, this special is something that fans should appreciate. It pokes fun at certain scenes that had us all scratching our heads (shirtless Kylo Ren anyone?) and brings in some of the best characters from the entire franchise.

My only complaint is that it is too short, clocking in at right around 46 minutes, but I do understand why. The plot is simple enough that it could have felt dragged out if it was feature length but I could have easily watched another 30 minutes of it. Yes, there is a lot of great humor, and this is for sure a comedy, but it also a bit of heart and a great lesson that we see a lot in this franchise — believe in yourself, and others.

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is a fun addition to the franchise that I think most fans will truly appreciate, no matter which trilogy they think is the best.
