The Mortuary Collection is a super fun horror flick that features five tales, each one more disturbing than the last.
This time of year is perfect for spooky movies. Movies that have you curled up in a ball as you gnaw on your thumbnails. And that is exactly what The Mortuary Collection is. At first, it feels like a fun collection of off the wall stories that are tucked within an overall story — but as it goes on it gets more and more horrifying. In a good way.
If you have followed me for a while you know I have an unhealthy obsession with gore. When a movie pushes it just a little too far, I am usually here for it. While The Mortuary Collection had the perfect amount of gore for me. It was spread throughout the film which made it even better.
The movie itself is basically a couple of people telling stories of strange deaths. There are some repeat actors, which threw me at first, but then I easily got past it. The stories are not necessarily connected, however they are all supposed to be based in that town — as noted by the newspapers we see at the beginning.
The stories get more and more twisted, and more and more crazy as they go on. Because of this, I was getting more excited, and also a bit more terrified, as the movie progressed. I knew there would be a some sort of connection and of course, a twist, but I could not figure it out. The fact that I was looking for something around every corner and still did not guess the twist, says a lot.
There are so many amazing shots in this film. I was seriously impressed with the cinematography. It gave off seriously creepy vibes when it needed to, which was almost the entire movie, lets be honest here. The darkness was used perfectly. During one of the stories there is an elevator scene that is hands down my favorite scene of the film. I don’t want to spoil it so just keep your eyes peeled for that one. It does not disappoint.
Toward the end of The Mortuary Collection there is a scene that is a little bit too cheesy for my liking. But the good news is that it isn’t so bad it ruins the whole movie. It is not the plot point or story that is cheesy, it is just the creatures on the screen that are just, well, not scary. I feel like their impact could have been more powerful if done better, but I am still not mad at it.
The Mortuary Collection is a collection of four crazy horror stories, each one more twisted than the last — and all tied together in a larger picture to make the movie a film, rather than an actual collection of stories. The best part about these twisted tales is that they all teach a lesson, more or less. Someone commits a sin and they are punished for it. Just perhaps not in the way you might imagine.
This movie is perfect for this time of year – Halloween time. But in all honesty this is a film I will be watching time and time again. It is not just creepy, it has a really great plot — and that ending! If you are into horror flicks, The Mortuary Collection is a must watch!
