We Bare Bears The Movie Review: A Fun Movie With Political Undertones

If you like We Bare Bears the show, you will enjoy the movie! The lesson does have some political undertones but they don’t take away from it. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

There are several shows that my entire family enjoys. From my 7 and 9 year old daughters, to myself and my husband. We Bare Bears is one of them. It is always filled with some good laughs and entertains all of us. So we were really excited when we heard there was going to be a We Bare Bears movie.

We finally were able to find the time to watch it and I have to say, it was a good time. Sure, it was basically an extended episode with cameos from all our favorite characters — but that is why it was so much fun. I know people have talked about the political undertones and while they are there, they didn’t take away from the movie. For us anyways.

Fun Internet Trend References

In We Bare Bears The Movie, the bears are shunned and kicked out of their homes because the residents have had enough of their antics. The final straw? They try to go viral, yet again, but putting together a live stream featuring so many old internet trends. I loved seeing references to Grumpy Cat, Gangam Style, Pizza Rat, and so many more!

If you have been around for these trends, as most parents have, this will make you chuckle. A great addition for the older folks watching this show to enjoy, while they go right over the little ones heads.

Some Political Undertones

The lesson of We Bare Bears The Movie is clearly don’t be afraid of someone just because they are different and you don’t understand them. Which honestly, is a really great lesson for children — and adults — to learn. This movie does seem to go a bit further than that and add in some political issues to help push that lesson home, which honestly, I was OK with.

When the bears are made to leave their home, they are told it is because they do not belong there. Panda is going to be shipped home to China, and Ice Bear back to the Arctic. This was clearly a dig at immigration and deportation. Then during the credits, they show some bears celebrating at a Gay Pride parade — which if you know me, you know I am here for! Love is love, y’all.

Overall Thoughts

We Bare Bears The Movie is very much an extended episode of the television show. It is not perfect and it certainly isn’t going to win any awards. But it is just as much fun as the show, if not more fun. Sure, they sneak some political views into it but I wasn’t mad at it. They went right over my daughters’ heads and they just focused on the fact that you should treat everyone equally, even if they are different than you.

Which honestly, no matter what side of politics you are on, this should be an important lesson to you. As Grizz so wonderfully put it, “Nature adapts. Maybe you should too.”.
