The New Mutants may not be the best X-Men movie, but it is up there on the list. A little bit of horror and a lot of heart make this a must watch.
The New Mutants is one of my favorite Marvel comic book series so of course the moment this movie was announced, I was excited. Then came the news that it was going to be part superhero movie, part horror movie, and I was overjoyed. Then we got delay after delay and I was beginning to think this movie was never coming out. Well, it just hit theaters and I just watched it and honestly…I was blown away!
When a movie gets delayed this much, it is usually not a good thing. Delays often mean that a movie is just not great. Despite having a feeling that The New Mutants was not going to be good, I knew I needed to see it. Theaters are not open where I live in New York right now, but it just so happened that I was going to be on vacation in Florida during opening weekend. And theaters there are open. So you know I had to get tickets for opening night.
After thinking long and hard we opted to bring our young daughters with us. They are 7 and 9 and we have let them watch a lot of things that are deemed for older kids. We showed them the trailers and they seemed to be fine, so we all went for our first movie theater experience since February.
Great Character Development
Illyana completely steals the show. She is a mix of badass, funny, uncaring, and yet vulnerable. She is very a much a teenager that has been hurt so much, she protects herself by picking on others and not making friends. Yes, she is the best character in the movie, by far. But that doesn’t mean the rest of the characters weren’t amazing too.
Each and every one of the “new mutants” brings something to the story. Rahne and Dani’s relationship was something so pure and loving, and it brings a lot of heart to the film. I really enjoyed them as individual characters, but also together.
Sam Guthrie will make you feel from him for him from the beginning and is a very lovable character. Roberto is a spoiled brat who clearly thinks a lot of himself. He also hides behind humor and smart remarks, just like Illyana.
Dr. Reyes has a major part in this movie too. I was suspicious of her from the beginning, and only grew more so as the movie went on. All of the actors did a great job in their roles, and brings something to The New Mutants that makes it worth watching.
A Little Bit Of Horror, But A Lot Of Suspense
The New Mutants has been described as a combination of a horror movie and a superhero movie and while I do get that, I think it is more suspense than horror. There is a mystery that clouds the story, in a good way. There is an unseen “superior” of Dr. Reyes’ who is behind the decisions made in the hospital. They try to push a certain wheelchair bound X-man, but it is pretty obvious that is not the case.
Fans of the comics will be guessing, and it will likely take a while until they figure it out. Once it was revealed my husband and I both were over the moon excited because he is a favorite character of ours from Marvel comics.
The New Mutants holds true to it being a superhero movie, although it may not have as much action as fans would hope for. Personally, I thought it was the right mix of character development, suspense, and action, but I can see why some might have wanted more. For me, that end battle and the use of Limbo and Lockheed was EVERYTHING and more than worth the wait!
A Coming Of Age Story
The New Mutants is also a bit of a coming of age story. The kids are all dealing with new powers that they cannot control yet. None of them have a real confidence in themselves, or their abilities, no matter how much they pretend they do. Many of them have caused things they are ashamed of and are having a hard time living with it.
Throughout the course of the movie they are dealing with their own personal nightmares, and they don’t know why. They are being forced to deal with the things they have done head on, and it actually helps them all in the long run. They become a team and I really — REALLY — want a sequel so I can see their story continue.
Comic Book Fans Will Love It
My husband and I are huge fans of The New Mutants comic books like I said, so we were very much looking forward to this movie. We went in cautiously optimistic, but our hopes were not high. But we both left the theater saying this was easily one of the better X-Men movies.
Sure, they took some liberties from the comic books, but what comic book based movie doesn’t? Any comic fan who knows who Lockheed is will freak out once they finally see him in action. Trust me on that one. This is a very clever and unique movie, and done really well. Again, it is not perfect, but it is impressive. Now we just need a sequel so we can get Warlock and Cypher to join the gang!

The New Mutants is about a thousand times better than people are saying right now. Anyone who thinks this is not in the top five X-Men movies is just crazy and lying to themselves. If you are a fan of The New Mutants comic books, you are going to love this movie. There is so much in there for fans that you cannot help but be excited about. Trust me.
The movie was well cast and each character brings a lot to the table. Some things are different from the comics but nothing too major that will anger the fandom. In fact, what fans do get should have them over the moon excited about it!
There is not a lot of action because of the nature of the suspense in the movie, but the battles we do get are pretty amazing. When we see the team using their powers and learning to control them, we know they are a team that should not be messed with.
If a theater near you is open and you feel safe going, I say do it! The New Mutants is great on the big screen, but should also be just as good on the small screen. This is one I will watch over and over again!
