The Surrogate deep dives into a very tough question — if you found out your unborn child has Down Syndrome — what would you do?
I was immediately sucked into The Surrogate because of how real it is. This movie addresses real life issues and questions that are really, really hard for those that go through them. In this story, a woman is a surrogate for her friends who are gay. When they get the results that the baby likely has Down Syndrome, there is a lot to consider.
Everyone involved weighs the options, and there is a lot of discussion of abortion. The characters go to a Down Syndrome community and read books to learn about what the future might hold. Since the couple is good friends with their surrogate, it makes things a little more difficult. There are three people trying to make a decision for the child and the future.
In The Surrogate there are a lot of REAL discussions. A lot of real thoughts and feelings. I can only imagine how difficult the decision would be if you were told that your child might have Down Syndrome. However, when you are a surrogate from friends that want to abort the child, and you think they should keep it, things can get very complicated.
The Surrogate brings to light real issues and real discussions and real thoughts and it is GOOD. Sure, it isn’t the most perfect movie but it is real. Which is what I love about it. I think that it is an important movie for those who might be struggling with the decision — but also good for just all humans to watch.
