The Invisible Man 2020 Review: A Thriller Perfectly Updated For The Times

The Invisible Man 2020 remake takes a classic thriller and somehow makes it better. It’s updated for the times, & brings light to domestic abuse.

Thrillers are some of my favorite movies because I genuinely enjoy being scared. And when watching The Invisible Man (2020), I was just that. On the edge of my seat with chills up and down my spine and goosebumps covering my arms the entire movie. From that first opening scene, I knew this was going to be a bone-chilling film. 

And that is exactly what it was. Thanks to an amazing performance from Elisabeth Moss, an incredible sound team, and of course, the one-shot takes, this movie was far better than I ever expected it to be. Director Leigh Whannell even had me second guessing my own sanity.

I also really liked the fact that this thriller added in a technical side to it, which is perfect for the year 2020. Adrian is an optics specialist, so of course he can design a suit that causes the human eye (and camera) to not see him. That makes perfect sense and is a great way to make this classic thriller new again. 

The Sounds & Score

The sounds and score in this movie played such an important role. There were moments the film was dead (haha, see what I did there) silent. Which was terrifying. Then something happens like someone kicking a dog bowl, or a sheet being pulled off someone while they are sleeping, and I jumped out of my skin. Then giggled nervously to myself as I looked around to see if the invisible man was in my room or not. 

If you have the option to watch The Invisible Man in a dark room with the surround sound blaring, do it. It will bring this already amazing movie to a whole new level. 

Shining A Light On Domestic Abuse

What makes Cecilia come off so crazy in The Invisible Man 2020 remake is not just the fact that she claims to think there is someone stalking her that no one can see. But it is why she thinks that way. What Adrian has done to her after years of abuse. He controlled her every move and he told her that she would never be able to leave him. No matter what, he would always be there. Even if she couldn’t see him.

Personally, I love the way this shines a light on domestic abuse. Even with Cecilia being presented with the facts that Adrian is dead, she can’t accept it because she feels like he will always be stalking her. That he will always be there, watching her. 

I don’t want to get into major spoilers but of course, she isn’t completely crazy, and weird things are happening. We know that from almost the beginning. But I just love how this remake brings abuse to light, without focusing too much on it. It doesn’t shove it down your throat at all, which would have been a mistake. I think that is a testament to Elisabeth Moss and her performance as well. You could just tell by looking at her that she was a little bit broken inside because of Adrian.

Overall Thoughts

The Invisible Man is a true thriller at heart. Get ready to be on the edge of your seat (and jump out of it several times). But is also a stunning movie, with some fantastic one-shot looking takes. At some point you might even think you are going a little crazy.

Again, I refuse to give spoilers but the ending will satisfy you after investing two hours in The Invisible Man. I know it satisfied me. Don’t blink, because you just might miss something — and trust me, you don’t want to do that. The Invisible Man was updated for 2020, and it made it all that more real. This sort of, kind of, feels like something that COULD happen. Which is always the best kind of thriller, isn’t it?
