Gigantosaurus Themed DIY Dinosaur Fossil Stepping Stones

International Dino Day is June 1st – and to celebrate I have teamed up with my friends at Gigantosaurus again! You might remember the fun clothespin dinosaur craft and game I shared before, and this time we made something REALLY cool – dinosaur fossil stepping stones! My whole family LOVES this show. These silly dino-buddies are always learning great lessons. Making this the perfect show for kids. And yes, my husband and I enjoy it too. Definitely one that you can watch as a family (face it parents, there are some kids shows that are not as fun as others), and we highly recommend it.

Dinosaur Fossil Stepping Stones

My daughters love to get their hands dirty, so they were all about this stepping stone activity. Play around with cement and toys outside?! Yes please!

I have mentioned before, but STEAM is very important to my husband and I, and we always make sure our crafts check off at least one of the boxes.

Science – Technology – Engineering – Art – Math. 

These are all really important for young developing minds. My husband is an engineer by trade, so pretty much everything we do in our house has a STEAM component to it. Just like these fossils!

What You Need

• Various sized toy dinosaurs (small dinosaurs and larger dinosaurs – work great!)
• no stick cooking spray or Crisco
• round baking pans and/or different shape tupperwares
• quick dry powdered concrete mix
• water
• Mod Podge or similar clear sealant (recommended)
• paints (optional)

These supplies will allow you to create different looking fossils. You can use any size container you wish. Just make sure they are not too deep, as that could make it hard to remove your fossils. Having a variety of dinosaurs makes it more fun! 

How to Make Your DIY Dinosaur Fossil Stepping Stones

STEP ONE: Prepare your pans and/or tupperwares by liberally spraying them with the no stick cooking spray. You could use Crisco instead if you do not have any spray. Just make sure you heavily apply it, so the concrete will not stick to the container.

STEP TWO: Mix the concrete in a separate container.

STEP THREE: Pour cement in to your prepped pans. 

STEP FOUR: Spray dinosaur figures with no stick spray then place them into the concrete however you wish! This is where imagination and creativity take over! Kids can use the dinosaur bodies, or even just the feet to create the look of dinosaur tracks! 

STEP FIVE: Let the concrete dry for several hours (according to the package). We let ours dry about an hour longer than recommended – just to be safe!

STEP SIX: Carefully remove the dinosaurs from the cement and the dinosaur fossil stepping stones from the containers.

OPTIONAL: Use permanent paints to decorate your fossils however you choose!

I highly recommend covering your DIY Dinosaur fossils with a Mod Podge (or similar clear sealer) spray if you paint them. This is because they will ideally be placed outside in a garden or flower bed. You don’t want to weather to ruin them.
