My family is a family of gamers – as you likely already know. We tend to run out to the store and pick up the latest games the day they come out. There was one in particular that we had been dying to be released for our Nintendo Switch – Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. I could tell from the trailer video that it would be a huge hit for our family. When Ubisoft sent us a copy of it (plus a really amazing collectible), I was proved right! We spent the entire long Labor Day Weekend playing it.
I can honestly say that I was immediately addicted to this game. It was basically all I thought about after about 10 minutes of playing it. One of my favorite things about it is how much of a strategy game it is. There are puzzles here and there – but the real puzzles are the battles with the Rabbids. In order to get a perfect score, all three of your characters should still be alive after a battle, and you need to use equal or less than the suggested number of turns. The battles are entirely turn based, which can get annoying in certain games, I know, but I promise, it doesn’t with this game.
Characters & Upgrades
This game is so much fun because you get to play all of your favorite characters like Mario, Lugi, and Princess Peach – but then also the Rabbid versions of them. Going through the worlds is so much fun because there are many nods to the Super Mario Bros. Games! The skill tree is how you upgrade your characters. There are lots of options to choose from to spend your orbs on – from increasing your movement length, to adding more damage to your weapons, to upgrading the power to your special moves.
Single Player Mode
The Story Mode in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a ton of fun! My husband and I play it together and switch players each time we come to a battle. I was really impressed with how tough the battles and levels get as you progress in the game. The fact that I started losing battles fairly early on in the game made me want to play it more and more. I worked hard to get orbs and coins so that I could upgrade my weapons and characters.
After a little bit of gameplay (about 2 hours for us), you can unlock the Buddydome, which allows you to play couch co-op. Because my whole family likes to play video games together, we love a good co-op game. One thing that really stood out to me about Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is that the co-op mode is separate from the single player story mode. This allowed me to continue playing the main game when I had free time, while being able to play with my husband or daughters in the BuddyDome when they were home.
This is the story of an unexpected encounter between Mario and the irreverent Rabbids. To bring order back to a splintered Mushroom Kingdom, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Yoshi team up with Rabbids heroes in a journey through four different worlds. Outwit unpredictable enemies in dynamic turn-based combat and co-op challenges, and solve puzzles along the way. Discover a feel-good and modern combat adventure designed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch system, playable anywhere, anytime, with anyone.
