Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is a dark, gritty, and grounded story that welcomes back a fan favorite villain, allowing more time to get to know him.

Maul is a complex villain, which is what has always made him one of my favorites. Even before fans discovered he lived in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, he was at the top of my list when it came to the Sith. Something about him was intriguing and captivating. So I am thrilled to have him back in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.

After his tumultuous journey through Clone Wars, I’ve always been hungry for more – more of his rage, his strategic brilliance, and his sheer desperation to reclaim power. Having now watched the first eight episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord, I can confidently say that Dave Filoni and his team have exceeded all of my expectations, and made me very happy, with this series.

Calling the animation gorgeous, stunning, and beautiful all feel like understatements. There were moments where I found myself completely distracted from the dialogue because I was busy tracing the brush-stroke textures on the characters’ faces or getting lost in the atmospheric backgrounds of this new, untouched world.

The technical execution here is at an all-time high for Lucasfilm. The motion blur during the action sequences adds a layer that elevates the series above previous Star Wars animated entries. But it’s the lighting that really blew my mind. The way the lightsabers cast a vibrant, humming glow onto the environment – and the detailed reflections they leave on everything they pass by is insane.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord brings in a lot of new characters that fans will surely love, or love to hate. It introduces us to Brander Lawson (voiced by Wagner Moura) and his droid partner, Two-Boots (Richard Ayoade). Their dynamic is easily one of my favorite parts of the show. They are partners with fundamentally different outlooks on the rising Empire, and watching their friendship navigate those murky political waters makes things very interesting. I won’t get into the details for fear of spoilers, but it isn’t easy, that’s for sure.

I’m calling it now: the internet is going to be obsessed with Spybot. As Maul’s droid companion, he manages to be simultaneously hilarious and deeply creepy. He captures that classic Star Wars droid charm but tilts it toward the dark side to match his master’s energy. I’ll be first in line when the inevitable toys hit the shelves.

It would have been easy for this show to rely on visuals alone, but the writing by Matt Michnovetz and Dave Filoni is exceptionally captivating. Set in that fascinating pocket of time after the Clone Wars, the story follows Maul as he tries to rebuild his criminal syndicate.

The introduction of Devon Izara, a disillusioned Padawan, adds a layer of tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Is she a victim, or is she truly the apprentice Maul has been seeking for his revenge? I honestly get chills just thinking about it.

What I appreciate most is that, at least so far, this feels like a self-contained story. In a franchise that often feels weighed down by its own massive lore, Shadow Lord feels focused. It’s dramatic, it’s funny when it needs to be, but mostly it’s a serious exploration of a man who refuses to be forgotten by the galaxy. At times, you can’t help but feel bad for him. Which is exactly what makes him a fantastic gray-area villain.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is consistently dark, gritty, and grounded. With only two episodes left in the season, I cannot see them messing this perfect series up. I understand them holding the final episodes from reviewers, but I am practically chomping at the bit for more.

At least knowing that Season 2 is already in production makes the cliffhangers a lot easier to swallow. Even if you aren’t a big fan of Maul (how dare you…), the sheer quality of this series makes it one of the best things Lucasfilm has produced in years, so you should at least give it a shot. Dave Filoni truly knows what he’s doing with this world, and I am all the way in for whatever comes next.

Lucasfilm recently confirmed that Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2 is already in production.
