The Beekeeper Review: Filled With Bee Puns & Action

The Beekeeper is filled with bee puns and Jason Statham kicking butt, delivering a really fun time at the movies.

Whenever fans see Jason Statham attached to a movie, it becomes obvious that there is going to be some pretty epic action sequences. That is exactly what The Beekeeper delivers. This movie is jam packed with incredible action set pieces that allow Jason Statham to shine.

It gets brutal and is even willing to push the envelope here and there. With David Ayer directing, that should come as no surprise. The two make a great team and we are eager to see them pair up again in the future.

This film follows Statham’s bloody trail of revenge as he tackles a group of cyber scammers, determined to kill his way to the top. It unexpectedly creates national stakes, as he does his best to protect the hive. Yeah, there are a lot of bee puns like that one – and each one is amazing.

While Jason Statham gives viewers some of the most epic action sequences they will see all year, Josh Hutcherson has an absolute blast as a spoiled rich kid who doesn’t care about anyone but himself.

He steals the show when it comes to the humor side of things, although Statham does a few great one liners to tickle your fancy as well. Hutcherson is a character that is easy to hate, which is the whole point.

The cyber crimes that are portrayed in The Beekeeper come off as horrific as they are because they actually happen in this real world. The first ten minutes of this film are both heartbreaking and infuriating. We don’t want to give too much away, but it should be said that this clip should be shown to everyone with a computer, especially the elderly.

Emmy Raver-Lampman is a great piece of the puzzle as well. While it is hard to understand her motive to keep tracking down Statham (you will understand when you see the movie), she respects the oath she took and that is commendable.

Statham, of course, does the most action wise, but she holds her own as well. We have seen her in action in Umbrella Academy, so she knows her way around a stunt.

The Beekeeper might have a simplistic plot, with minimal twists and turns that aren’t seen well in advance, but it is still a really fun time at the movies. If you want to see a movie where you can turn off your brain, watch some gnarly action (complete with some insane kills), and root for the guy who is just trying to protect those who have been taken advantage of, this one is for you.

The dialogue is ridiculous, in a campy and fun way. It certainly isn’t perfect, but it is likely everything you expect it to be — and there is nothing wrong with that.
