The end of The Legend Of Vox Machina season 2 episode 6 separated the team into two separate groups after Keyleth’s spell doesn’t work exactly as planned. Throughout the three episodes released this week, they remain apart, each having to deal with their own issue that is both heavy and intense.

    Episode 7: The Fey Realm

The Legend Of Vox Machina season 2 episode 7 picks up where we left off, with Vex, Vax, Keyleth, and Percy in the Fey Realm. The others were sent back to Tal’Dorei, where they encounter their own issues.

Percy claims to have studied the Fey Realm quite a bit when he was younger, so he knows that not much there is what it seems (and Vax is constantly putting him down, clearly still angry about what happened to his sister thanks to him). In fact, a lot of the plant life is dangerous, which is proven time and time again as the team must fight through it all. The weird thing is, it always seems to be going after Vax — perhaps because of the vestige he wears, or his connection to the matron of Ravens.

The vestige that is hidden in the Fey Realm is a bow, so it makes sense that Vex is one of the ones searching for it. On their journey a strange creature joins them, even though they would rather him not. He claims to know where they need to go and how to get them there.

At one point during a fight with the creatures there, Keyleth and Vax are hit with some spores that send them on a wild trip. This is a lot of fun and helps off set the intensity of the action.

The others, it is discovered, were sent back to Tal’dorei. Pike might have been thought dead, but she is able to muster enough energy to heal herself. Grog feels horrible, of course. Scanlan and Pike realize that it is the bloodsword that is effecting him like this, and try to convince him to destroy it.

It looks as though he is going to attack them, as the sword eggs him on and hungers for blood, but he ultimately destroys it. The sword threatens that it will take Grog’s strength with it and ends up cursing him.

Grog looses all of his muscles, to the point where he can’t even hold his body up or walk. Scanlan and Pike help him as they journey to a place where Pike says they can get help. Throughout the trip, Pike learns to look at Scanlan in a new light, as he helps Grog with everything he needs. Scanlan had told the sphinx that he wants love, and perhaps this is the start of it. At the end of the episode they arrive at a small house.

    Episode 8: Echo Tree

The members of the team that are in the Fey Realm end up discovering that Syngorn, where Vex and Vax hail from, has transported itself there to avoid the dragons. Because of this they end up face to face with their father, who we know treated them poorly as children. Now we see how he treats them still, and it is clear he is an awful parent.

He has a new wife and child, who is an adorable half-sibling of the twins and eager to meet them. Vax gives her a feather to put in her hair, and they tell her they are happy to meet her.

In asking their father for help, hoping to learn more about where the vestige is kept, he offers them a letter that will allow them to move freely throughout the town on their way to where they are going. However, he explains that the vestige is a myth and he has zero confidence in them that they will find it.

He refuses to give them the courtesy they deserve, and tells them he will respect them should they arrive back on his doorstep with The Fenthres bow.

In order to acquire it, they must confront an ancient and powerful archfey. This ends up being Vex’s job as she is almost instantly taken by it. It uses her weaknesses to its advantage, focusing heavily on the fact that she just wants acceptance from her father.

An incredible action sequence plays out as the others try to break her from the spell. Eventually she realizes that the archfey is taking advantage of her and she is able to kill it, resulting in her getting the vestige.

Percy asks her if she wants to show it off to her father, to which she replies that she is not ready yet. The strange creature that has been traveling with them opens a portal back to Tal’dorei for them, thanking them for the entertainment they provided. However, once they disappear through it, the creature transforms into some kind of elf mage.

Meanwhile in Tal’dorei, viewers learn that it is the home of Pike’s great grandfather that they arrived at. He seems to know Grog, but this is his first time meeting Scanlan. He has an idea of how to cure Grog from the curse, which ends up being very unpleasant for Grog — although Scanlan really steps it up by helping insert it where the sun doesn’t shine for him.

This removes the curse but does not bring his muscles back.

Pike and Scanlan say they need to hunt for the other vestige, which they know to be in Westruun. In Scanlan’s vision, the town was being attacked by a horde of barbarians that look like Grog, and Grog admits he knows who they are. It is his old gang and the leader is Uncle Kevdak, who used a vestige — the Titanstone Knuckles — to kill him.

Episode 9: A Test of Pride

When Vex, Vax, Keyleth, and Percy arrive back in Tal’dorei they realize that a lot of time has passed. Weeks actually. Percy notes that the way time works in the Fey Realm is different, and this must be why. They meet their friends and learn that the rest of the team is in Westruun, and it looks like they are preparing for a fight. They decide to head off to meet them.

The majority of this episode takes place with Pike, Grog, and Scanlan. Since Grog will easily be recognized, even in his smaller form, Scanlan turns himself into a dragon fly to buzz through the town and see what they are up against. Kevdak’s gang does not like the way he is leading things, and the fact that he has them bowing to the dragons just so they can have their run of the town. In fact, even his own son, Grog’s cousin, is plotting against him.

Back at the barn, Grog tells Pike his story. He was part of the gang and did not ever think much about killing innocent people, until he came across her grandfather. He could not bring himself to kill him and even had to fight his cousin to help him escape.

When Kevdak discovered him he beat him with the Knuckles and left him for dead. Pike’s grandfather game back, along with her mother, and they nursed him back to health. Pike never know this connection, and is very much moved by it.

When Scanlan’s magic runs out and he is forced to hide in an abandoned building, he discovers several others are already there. They have been displaced by Kevdak’s horde and are looking for a way out. Some of the people there are a traveling band, and there is a bard who says that she has heard of Scanlan. She clearly has something against him and she tells him from what she heard, he would run away from them and not return to help them.

Meanwhile, Pike and Grog are worried about Scanlan and devise a plan that can get them through the gates — they cover Pike in pig’s blood and Grog carries her in, saying that he caught her when she was trying to run away. They eventually meet up with Scanlan and the residents of the town that he is trying to help escape from Westruun.

The townsfolk are afraid of Grog, and this is when he realizes that he needs to make up for his past — when he would kill just for the sake of killing. He finds his Uncle and confronts him right before the episode fades to black. Seems we will have to wait a week to discover what happens next.
