Star Trek: Picard 2×10 brings fans to the end and overall this season was a bit disappointing. Here’s a recap and review of the Picard finale, titled Farewell.
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 10
The end is here.
After the Borg Queen took La Sirena, and left the message that to save the future there must be two Renees, one who lives and one who dies, Picard and crew are trying to figure out what she meant with that message. Tallin in quick to jump on the mission, as she considers it her destiny to save the future, specially Picard.
Picard follows Tallin, as he knows that she is willing to sacrifice herself for the future and he does not want her to do that, because other than him caring deeply about her, she also reminds him of his beloved Laris. Tallin reassures him that it is her mission to do such a thing and that she does not him to save her at all.
As Tallin tries to find Renee, Dr. Soong arrives to try to kill Renee and accomplish his master plan to be remembered in history as the Borg Queen told him. Tallin finds Renee, and convinces her to let her help her. Renee seems to ignore Tallin, and falls into Dr. Soong’s traps, where he poisons her with his touch, however, it is revealed that that was not Renee, but Tallin, who had shapeshifted into her. Renee is safe on the ship on its way to Europa, and Tallin dies on Picard’s arms.
Dr. Soong is angered when he realizes that the real Renee survived and that his future will not be the glorious one the Borg Queen had told him. As he is angered by that this discovery, he also realizes that his computer files with all his experiments have all been deleted by Kore, however, he pulls out a file with the name “Project Khan”, perhaps referencing the iconic super human who becomes one of Captain Kirk’s biggest enemies.
Is this a sign that Dr. Soong is the one responsible for the creation of Khan? It is ever confirmed, but it is very possible since by the time Khan and Kirk meet, the technology keeping Khan alive is ancient. After deleting her father’s life’s work, Kore meets with a Traveler of all and Space and time, who is none other than Wesley Crusher. He tells Kore about their work, how they preserve timelines and futures, he offers Kore a position with them, but the catch is that he can’t guarantee her safety. Kore, accepts, stating that she has never been safe.
Meanwhile, Raffi, Seven and Ríos are trying to stop Dr. Soong and get control of Dr. Soong’s ships and they manage to destroy the small fleet he had. Realizing that they may never return to their time, Ríos prepares them to stay in the past. Raffi notes how happy Ríos looks with Teresa and Ricardo. Q finally returns and has a heart to heart with Picard, revealing that he is dying and telling Picard that ultimately he does not want him to be alone, since he is dying alone.
Q meets with the rest of the crew, ready to send them home. However, Ríos opts to stay behind with Teresa and Ricardo, knowing that there’s nothing to do to change his mind, Picard says goodbye and tells him to build a good future. Q says his last “Mon capitane”, Picard gives him a hug and Q returns them to the future, also known as the ending of episode one, where the USS Stargazer was under attack by the Borg.
The Borg invader that had appeared is revealed to be Agnes, now a Borg/human hybrid, who came to warn Picard about a galactic event where a surge of energy would destroy the solar system they are in, they contacted Picard to help them have access to a fleet that would help them protect the solar system as the surge happened. As they prepare, Elnor is revealed to have been brought back by Q, much to Raffi’s happiness, one last surprise by Q.
After saving the solar system, Picard and his remaining crew meet up with Guinan, where she tells him what was of Ríos’ life. She explains that he and Teresa worked to give people access to medical care and that Ricardo grew up to clean the oceans and pollution. Teresa eventually died of old age, but Ríos died slightly younger in a fight over medical supplies, with a cigar in his mouth. And that is the end of the beloved La Sirena captain.
Picard returns to Chateau Picard, where he is reunited with Laris and the two share a moment as the episode concludes.
Overall, this season was a little disappointing, it had a lot of potential that was never fully explored and many plot points that were never brought up again. Whatever happened to Soji? What were the consequences of Ríos staying behind? What became of Dr. Soong’s “Project Khan”? What was the point of the Watcher?
There was so much that was going on, and it also felt as if nothing was going on. As soon as it was announced that season three would feature the return of the original cast of “The Next Generation”, it became very clear that this season would serve as a farewell for most of the new Picard cast. We said goodbye to Soji, Agnes, and Ríos. I am especially sad to see Ríos go, since he was such a central character of the show and he meant a lot to me personally, still he had a good ending.
Despite the season being promoted as Q’s return, we barely got to see him, we needed more of him specially since he was supposed to be the focus, but instead other villains were added. Still, his few scenes were impeccable, as expected. I am sad to see the season end, but am excited for season three and to see how Picard’s adventure concludes, since it is also the final season.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
