Marvel shows tend to have their WTF moment around the four episode mark, and the latest MCU show, Moon Knight is no different. Towards the end of the end of the episode Marc Spector is shot by Arthur Harrow, but he doesn’t die. Not really. He ends up in a psychiatry ward in a hospital — which could be all in his head, or the true reality that viewers are just becoming privy to. Either way, things get weird.

Not only do Marc Spector and Steven Grant come face to face (Oscar Isaac is TRULY crushing this role, you guys), a third sarcophagus is present and it can be assumed this is where Jake Lockley is being kept. As if that isn’t strange enough, Steven and Marc come face to face with a hippo Goddess lady at the very end of the episode. She is pleasant enough, waving and saying hi before they both scream in her face in terror.

So who exactly is this hippo Goddess lady, and what does her presence mean for the rest of the Moon Knight series?

Who Is The Hippo Goddess In Moon Knight Episode 4?

If you don’t know all of the Egyptian Gods off the top of your head, a quick google search will help to identify the hippo lady as the Goddess Taweret. She is the protector of mothers and children, as well as the Goddess of life, birth, and rebirth. So her showing up right after Marc is shot is very interesting. More on that speculation later, but for now, let’s learn about Taweret.

The hippo Goddess Taweret is said to be sweet and kind, but also ferocious when it comes to protecting a mother and a newborn child. Her head and body are that of the hippo, her paws are that of the lion, and her back is the back of a crocodile. She was thought to help women in labor and to ward off evil spirits and demons who intended harm to mother or baby.

What Does Taweret Mean For Moon Knight?

So now that we know who the hippo Goddess lady Taweret is, let’s theorize on what she is doing in Moon Knight, and what this means for Marc, Steven, and Jake.

Seeing as she is the goddess of birth, rebirth, and life, it seems like she has shown up in order to save Marc Spector from dying (again). He got shot and it looked like a pretty fatal hit, but now he is inside his head, or at least we think so, fighting to stay alive. Taweret’s presence feels important here. Perhaps she is the one keeping him alive and fighting. She is protective over children, and anyone who has seen the show knows how childlike Steven can be.

There have been several times throughout the series that Steven has called and left a message for his mother. We don’t see, or even hear her, but there could be a tie in here with Taweret as well. Could Steven/Marc/Jake be the new Avatar for Taweret? At least until Khonchu is released? Who knows.

Either way, it can be assumed that she is there to help, and to make sure that Marc survives this whole ordeal. With only two episodes left in the series, answers should be right around the corner.
