Moon Knight episode 4 is here and in true Marvel fashion, this is the episode that changes everything. Here’s our recap and review of Episode 4 of Moon Knight.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR MOON KNIGHT EPISODE 4
“The Tomb”
Before the Marvel logo hits in Moon Knight episode 4, we get to see one of the gods from the last episode put up the stone statue of Khonshu revealing there are 9 more statues of different gods. Starting this episode right where the last left off, we see Layla fight a group of desert goons while Steven is still knocked out from the loss of Khonshu.
After she defeats them Marc wakes up, and they begin their journey to Ammit’s tomb. Here they fully embrace the Indiana Jones/treasure hunt type of theme and I love it. Fans discover out Marc and Steven can still switch personalities, but the moon powers such as the suit and healing are completely gone without Khonchu.

As the journey continues we see Layla and Steven starting to catch feelings for each other and of course, Marc doesn’t like it. That aside, the journey through the tomb explores way more of the Egyptian lore, really bringing viewers into this world. The two find the site to be a maze and explore a room that is said to “represent Ammit’s mouth” from the diagram Steven drew.
This scene is one of my favorites from all of the Marvel Disney+ shows. It is the perfect amount of horror and excitement that I wish we had in the first two episodes. With that being said, I also loved the creature design and how the chase was executed. The score ramped up and gave me chills and finally the tension broke and left Layla and Steven separated.

Layla is on the run from a creature who is said to be a guard of Ammit’s tomb. It follows her through the dark and twisted hallways until there is an inevitable fight where she shows off her skills. During this fight there are some legit jump scares — where I literally jumped out of my seat. I also thought she had died several different times but she ended up being okay. Then Harrow appeared again, ready to manipulate the situation, something he is great at doing.

This is where the episode takes a huge emotional turn, Steven finds what he thinks is Ammit’s tomb but it turns out to be Alexander the Great’s — was he her final Avatar? At the same time Layla has some revelations with Harrow, finding out that Marc was present during her father’s death at the archeological site. The actress who plays Layla – May Calamawy – blew me away in this scene and I can’t wait to see more of her.

When she finds Steven after these revelations, she is furious and confronts him about what happened to her father — yelling to get the attention of Marc until he takes over the body to talk with her. Here we get another awesome performance moment from Oscar Isaac as he switches from Steven to Marc and explains to Layla that he was there when her father was killed but he himself died that night as well. That is, until Khonshu brought him back.
I was expecting the scene to end there but then we find out that the only reason Marc even met her is because he has a guilty conscious about letting her dad die.
Here the episode takes a HUGE twist that I called in my theories for episode 4 that Marc / Steven would die and wake up in the Asylum. Here is where viewers see a bunch of returning actors from Steven’s real life like his boss, the statue, the cops, and so much more. However, they are all either patients or orderlies, making things a bit crazy and confusing. What is reality and what is fantasy here?

These characters along with, later in the episode, Steven and Marc meeting each other in separate bodies, makes me think that this asylum takes place somewhere in the head of out main character. What refutes my theory is the Lemire run in the comics. In this run the main antagonist is Dr. Emmet who is connected to the god Ammit, the one that Harrow “serves”. This could be happening here in the ending of episode 4 because of what we saw in the interrogation scene between Marc and Harrow. Harrow could be representing Dr. Emmet and his attempts of convincing Marc that he is insane.

Now to the very end of the episode, where things get even crazier. Fans see Marc running from the guards until he he locks himself in a bathroom. In this room is a sarcophagus that Steven pops out of — in a separate body from Marc. Fans will be thrilled to finally see these two come face to face, but what does it all mean? After confirming the last thing they each remember is Harrow shooting them, they run down the hall, passing another sarcophagus that is shacking violently.

This all but guarantees that Jake Lockley, the third personality of Moon Knight, will show up before the end of the show. This was already hinted at previously when neither Marc nor Steven killed the Egyptian criminals, yet they ended up dead. So why does it seem like this is Lockley confirmed? Well we know that the “second” personality (Steven) was in a sarcophagus and the only reason he could escape was through the help of Marc opening it. We only saw the tomb of Lockley shake but without the help of Marc, it likely wouldn’t be able to be opened.

Why would it be Lockley and not anyone else – well it can’t be Moon Knight or Mr. Knight because they are alternate versions of Marc and Steven respectively. Marc can’t be Mr. Knight and Steven can’t be Moon Knight. So they wouldn’t be part of the original three personalities. On top of this, the entire show has been teasing three Oscar Isaacs — the credits have his face three times, the first episode he has three reflection, just to name a few hints.

As Marc and Steven run further down the hall they see a figure looming through a door. When it opens and it turns out to be… a hippo lady?! This is actually Taweret, the protective Egyptian goddess of mother and child during pregnancy and childbirth. Learn more about Taweret and get a full breakdown of the Moon Knight episode 4 ending.
This episode answered so many questions but also left us more confused than ever before. Jake Lockley’s introduction seems like it is just around the corner. With just two episodes left, hopefully Marvel can stick the landing!
