Disney+’s new series Big Shot stars John Stamos as a girls High School basketball coach — but it is so much more than a sports show.

Big Shot is a tween/teen drama that focuses on a girls High School basketball team and the man that is all but forced to coach them after getting ousted from the NCAA. While it does show a lot of practices and games, it is so much more than a sports show. Reminiscent of Glee, with an incredible cast, humor, and heart, this is one you don’t want to miss on Disney+.
John Stamos is one of the best parts of this show. I have been a fan of his since Full House, and he remains an amazingly talented actor. I cannot picture anyone besides him in this role. This cast is well rounded with newcomers but also legends like Stamos and Yvette Nicole Brown as the Principal of the High School. Stamos and Brown play off each other perfectly and are some of my favorite interactions in the show so far (press was given the first three episodes).

Coach Marvyn Korn, played by John Stamos, takes a job at a private high school when he is all out of other options. After being kicked out of the NCAA for throwing a chair, he is almost out of options, and decides to take this job so that he can continue to coach. The girls on the team are alright players, but they haven’t ever had a coach like Korn. Almost immediately he butts heads with some of them, and other faculty at the school.
The storylines themselves can be a bit predictable at times, but they are still done in a way that should keep most audiences engaged. My 9 year old daughter plays basketball, and my husband coaches her team, so this is a show I plan to watch a second time with them. Although it might be a bit too much for my daughter, especially since each episode is about forty-five minutes long, I think she will enjoy it for the most part.
Basing this show around a group of strong young women, who each have their own issues, is very smart of the show. Being a mom of two girls — two girls that play basketball — makes me really relate to the show as a whole. Yes, it is about a sports team. The show features practices and games, but the show is so much more than that. It gives off some serious girl power vibes, which I really appreciate.
As to be expected with more teen dramas, there is a whole lot of heart, humor, and teachable moments in Big Shot. I found myself tearing up sometimes, as well as laughing so hard I had tears. The show is very well rounded and a lot of fun to watch. While John Stamos’ character is coaching the girls to be a better team, and better players, they are teaching him as well. There is a lot to learn from this show and I dare you not to become immediately invested in each and every character.
About Big Shot
After getting ousted from the NCAA, a men’s basketball coach is given a chance for redemption with a coaching position at an elite private high school. He soon learns that the teenage players require empathy and vulnerability — foreign concepts for the stoic Coach Korn (John Stamos). By learning how to connect with his players, Marvyn starts to grow into the person he’s always hoped to be. The girls learn to take themselves more seriously, finding their footing both on and off the court.
