The Right One is a brilliant film that offers a unique take on dealing with loss and grief. An absolute must watch movie.

    the right one review

The Right One is considered a romantic comedy, but for me it was so much more than that. Yes, there is a little bit of romance, and there is a lot of comedy, but The Right One gives us a unique take on grief that really stuck with me.

In this film a novelist with writer’s block, named Sara, discovers her muse in a complicated guy named Godfrey. When she first meets him, he is an art aficionado, but the second time she sets eyes on him, he is a singing cowboy. As time goes on she comes to realize he has many different personalities, and her friend and manager warns her that he might be mentally unstable.

However, Sara has started to write again, really write, and she has Godfrey to thank for that. The only issue she has with him is that she is trying to get to know the real Godfrey, but he doesn’t want to show that side of him. Really, each character he takes on is a bit of his personality.

Eventually she discovers the reason why he acts like this, a very sad story that has set him in a tailspin of grief. But can she help him break out of his shell or will she simply give up on him all together?

    A Unique Take On Grief

Probably one of my favorite things about this movie is that it is all about grief. Yes, you have a man and a woman meeting  and getting to know each other so it is a bit of a romance. And yes there is a lot of comedy and several laugh out loud moments that will have you more than entertained.

But The Right One is quite a bit more than that. It gets deep. As you get to know Godfrey, and as Sara gets to know Godfrey, you can’t help but feel for him and what he went through. My biggest issue with this movie is also related to this part of the story — we didn’t get to know about Godfrey’s past enough.

When Sara discovers his story, it is told to her through someone else. We then briefly get a flashback toward the end of the film, but it just isn’t enough. I would have loved to dive deeper into Godfrey’s past. Either through him or through a longer flashback. The movie is only an hour and a half long, so even adding in another 15 minutes or so giving more, would have made me happy.

    Overall Thoughts

The Right One had me hooked from the very beginning, largely in part because of Nick Thune, who plays Godfrey. He does such a fantastic job of embracing all of his personalities and immersing himself in them. I was intrigued with his character, his story, and what was going to happen with him next.

There was a moment at the very end that made me teary eyed, although I didn’t cry at all. If you like a good rom-com this movie is sure to be a hit with you. It has all the makings of one, but with a little bit more darkness than we normally see. It brings grief to the surface, and the different ways people might deal with loss.

The Right One is an absolute joy to watch, despite some of its dark undertones. It isn’t perfect, but it sure is a great movie. A quick watch too, clocking in at just an hour and a half long.

    About The Right One

In this heartfelt and hilarious rom-com, Sara, a novelist struggling with writer’s block, needs inspiration — and finds it when she serendipitously meets Godfrey, a down-on-his-luck oddball who constantly changes personas and alter egos in order to cope with his past and avoid reality. Just as Godfrey begins to open up to Sara, he discovers that she’s been using him as inspiration for her next novel, and he vanishes from her life. Did Sara just lose the man of her dreams, or will she be able to find him and make things right?

THE RIGHT ONE stars Nick Thune (Dave Made A Maze), Cleopatra Coleman (“The Last Man on Earth”), Iliza Shlesinger (Pieces of a Woman) and David Koechner (Anchorman series). The film is written and directed by Golden Globe and Emmy nominated Ken Mok making his feature film directorial debut. Mok is the Creator and Executive Producer of “America’s Next Top Model,” Producer of Joy starring Jennifer Lawrence and Invincible starring Mark Wahlberg.

THE RIGHT ONE on Digital and On Demand on February 5, 2021 Worldwide
and on Blu-Ray and DVD on February 9, 2021 in the U.S.
