This Memorial Day I wanted to write a little bit about my husband. He is a United States Navy Veteran – and has been in two wars. He lived on a submarine, which can be extremely hard because it is small and cramped – and you might not see the sun for months at a time. Can you imagine that? I sure can’t. It would drive me insane for sure! I think he deserves some recognition today for a few reasons.
He is my rock. He has kept me whole, even when my whole world comes crashing down around me. Before we had my oldest daughter, we had a miscarriage. We had just gotten married, I went off birth control, and we decided when it happens, it happens. I was pregnant almost immediately. When we went in for our dating ultrasound we discovered the baby was not the size it should be and there was no heartbeat. The process was dragged out over three weeks before we confirmed what we already knew, the baby was gone. My world crumbled. I was a mess. He held me and my hand through it all – with a brave face. But I know that inside a little piece of him was dying too. He knew that he had to be strong for me and I will never forget how safe he made me feel going through that. Birthing our youngest daughter at home was the hardest thing I have ever done. He was with me every step of the way – holding me and helping me through every contraction.
He is my geeky partner in crime. Surprise everyone, I am a geek. Just kidding, I know that you all know that by now. My husband is right there with me. He loves collecting comic books, playing Magic, playing HeroClix, and watching geeky shows. He likes collecting things with me (like POP figures and Lego sets) and we have matching comic book character tattoos. Oddly enough, we both had the same favorite comic book couple when we met – Gambit and Rogue – and now we have them in an embrace, tattooed on us. Mine is on my back, and his is on his side.
He is an amazing father. There is nothing like the way he looks at our girls. He loves them with all of his heart. He is one of the best fathers I know. He always has time for them and will help them with whatever problems they have. He plays “Barbie House” and “Doc McStuffins House” and “My Little Pony” whenever he is asked – even does the voices for the characters. We all cuddle up in my 3.5 year old’s bed and read bedtime stories when we can. He works so hard so that they can have whatever they want.
He loves me. He must because I make him watch movies and shows he would never want to watch otherwise. He listens to me when I go on and on about drama in my world – and even has input. He supports my blogging even though it sometimes takes me away from him. He is the perfect husband – and I am lucky to have him.

Thank him for me. It takes people like him that keep us free. I could never live in a submarine. I don’t like small cramped spaces or the ocean.

Thank you for your service, both your husband and you. I am an active duty military spouse and have been for over 30 years. I look forward to retirement next year. It is a challenging and rewarding career, for both of us. God bless you both!
