WARNING: This article contains massive spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 2.

The second episode of The House of the Dragon season 3 moves at an incredibly fast pace, shifting the theater of war from the open seas directly to the heart of the realm. King’s Landing falls in spectacular, shocking fashion, altering the balance of power in Westeros in a single night.

Following the trauma of the Gullet, Rhaena Targaryen seeks shelter from the storm. She is officially given asylum at the Vale, providing her temporary safety away from the immediate crosshairs of the Greens. But while the Vale offers peace, the capital prepares for war.

The Gold Cloaks, still fiercely loyal to Daemon and Rhaenyra, play a pivotal role when a massive contingent arrives at the city walls. Their arrival triggers a swift, highly coordinated internal coup, paralyzing the city’s defenses from the inside out and throwing the Greens into utter chaos.

Taking advantage of the internal collapse and putting her trust in Alicent, Rhaenyra Targaryen takes King’s Landing. Disillusioned by Aemond’s cruelty and desperate to prevent further bloodshed, Alicent takes covert actions to secure Rhaenyra the throne, effectively betraying her own faction to let the Black Queen in.

The transition of power is anything but peaceful. A purge immediately ripples through Harrenhal and the capital. At Harrenhal, a brutal execution takes place, resulting in the violent deaths of Ser Simon Strong and his sons. The man responsible for this ruthless cleansing is none other than Daemon Targaryen, continuing his uncompromising campaign of terror to secure his wife’s reign.

Inside the capital, old accounts are settled. Otto Hightower makes a surprise return in this episode, though his homecoming is far from glorious. It is revealed that Larys Strong had been keeping Otto captive in a subterranean cell to manipulate the political board.

Otto’s freedom is short-lived, however, as Daemon Targaryen wastes no time making sure that Rhaenyra executes Otto Hightower to eliminate the Green mastermind once and for all. Joining him in death this episode is Lord Jasper “Ironrod” Wylde.

Before his execution, Ironrod commits a desperate act of violence, launching a vicious physical attack against Alicent Hightower for her betrayal. Though Alicent survives the assault, the episode leaves her and Helaena Targaryen in a deeply tragic state, effectively confined as political prisoners within their own home, watching their family legacy crumble.
