Basic SXSW 2026 Red Carpet Interviews: Ashley Park & More

SXSW 2026 Basic red carpet interviews: Ashley Park, Leighton Meester, and the rest of the ensemble cast talk about bringing the film to SXSW. [VIDEO]

Basic probably brought the most talent with them out of any other movie that played at SXSW. The carpet was jam-packed, as everyone involved was thrilled to talk about it. Written and directed by Chelsea Devantez, the film is an expansion of her 2020 short film that was originally slated for the festival’s cancelled edition.

The story follows Gloria (Ashley Park), who spirals into a social media-fueled obsession with her boyfriend Nick’s “perfect” ex-girlfriend, Kaylinn (Leighton Meester). Blending magical realism with the very real paranoia of modern dating, the film explores the wide gap between online expectations and the messy reality of self-worth.

Mama’s Geeky spoke with Leighton Meester, Taylor John Smith, and a host of other cast members who bring this vibrant world to life. The film’s message of reclaiming identity over comparison resonated throughout our conversations, highlighting a story that ultimately prioritizes lasting bonds over romantic resolutions.

During our interview, Ashley Park reflected on the journey of the project and the unique energy of the premiere.

“It’s been such a long time coming for Chelsea [Devantez], and to see this story finally get its moment on a stage like this is incredible,” Park shared.

She also touched on the relatable nature of her character’s insecurities: “We’ve all had those moments where we look at a screen and feel like we’re not enough, but this movie finds the humor and the heart in that struggle”.

Park emphasized that the film is a “must-watch for those going through relationship troubles,” offering a humorous warning about letting digital lives dominate our reality.
