Basic Review [SXSW 2026]

Basic is a hilarious, magical-realism riot about a woman who spirals into a digital obsession with her ex’s “perfect” ex after a messy breakup.

From the opening frame, Basic hits with a level of chaotic energy that is as hilarious as it is deeply uncomfortable – mostly because of how much I saw myself in Gloria’s digital deep dives. Starring the always brilliant Ashley Park, the film manages to do something rare: it takes the messy breakup trope and treats it with a level of honesty that feels both magical and painfully real. It’s a comedy, sure, but it’s one that understands the specific, modern brand of madness that comes with a broken heart and a high-speed internet connection.

The catalyst for the story is a fight between Gloria and her boyfriend, Nick, that feels like a Rorschach test for modern dating. Nick refuses to post her on his social media, and honestly, I will die on the hill that this is a massive red flag. Gloria isn’t being crazy or extra – she’s asking for a basic level of public acknowledgment.

When the relationship crumbles over this, you feel for her immediately. Ashley Park is known for her impeccable comedic timing, but here she shows us a vulnerable, raw side that makes you want to reach through the screen and hand her a glass of wine.

Played by Leighton Meester, Kaylinn is introduced as the hottest, most basic ex-girlfriend to ever exist. Initially, the movie sets us up for a girl vs. girl dynamic, pitting Gloria’s quirky complexity against Kaylinn’s curated, sun-drenched aesthetic. However, the magic of Basic is how it handles this obsession.

As Gloria loses herself in the details of Kaylinn’s life, the film uses magical realism to show her paranoia bleeding into her reality. But the most brilliant choice the writers made was ensuring Kaylinn wasn’t just a caricature. Getting to explore Kaylinn’s story was, for me, the most important part of the film. Leighton Meester brings a groundedness to the role that reminds us that the perfect women we stalk online are fighting their own battles.

Without giving away the ending, the evolution of the relationship between these two women is what elevated the movie from a standard rom-com to something special. It starts with Gloria trying to tear Kaylinn down in her head, but it becomes a journey about Gloria reclaiming her own narrative. The chemistry between Park and Meester is electric; they play off each other with a rhythm that feels incredibly natural.

I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t expect to get as emotional as I did. There are moments toward the end that caught me completely off guard, touching on that universal feeling of not being enough and the exhausting cycle of comparing your behind-the-scenes footage to someone else’s highlight reel. It captures the beauty of falling in love – not just with a partner, but with the version of yourself that doesn’t need a like to feel valid.

Basic stands out because of Ashley Park’s incredible range and the clever way it subverts the mean girl trope. The soundtrack perfectly mirrors Gloria’s spiraling emotions, making it the ultimate selection for a girls’ night out.

Do not let the title fool you; there is nothing basic about the way this movie handles the complexities of female friendship and self-worth. It is a mandatory watch for anyone who has ever felt the sting of a breakup in the digital age. It is funny, it is vibrant, and it is unapologetically honest.

About Basic

After Gloria and Nick break up, Gloria takes us through Nick’s dating history, untangling his web of ex-girlfriends through details she can find online. But when she discovers Kaylinn, the hottest most basic ex-girlfriend to ever exist, Gloria not only loses herself, she loses control of the story she’s been telling. Basic is a comedy that blends the magical-realism of jealous paranoia with the magic of falling in love.
