The Second Best Hospital In The Galaxy might follow aliens living in space, but it is extremely relatable to us humans.
The Second Best Hospital In The Galaxy is sure to hook a lot of viewers right from the very start. Not only is it absolutely hilarious, it is grounded in what is very clearly a real friendship between the two leads, Dr. Sleech (Stephanie Hsu) and Dr. Klak (Keke Palmer). They have each other’s backs no matter what and while the rest of this show is fantastic, it works its very best when the story is centered around this friendship.
Set in space, the two alien doctors work at the second best hospital in the galaxy, as the title would make one assume. They always put helping their patients first, even if that means bending the rules when necessary. Don’t worry, we get a glimpse at the best hospital in the galaxy in the first episode, and quickly learn that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
That being said, the supporting characters are great as well, really helping to round out the world that this series is set in. Natasha Lyonne as Nurse Tup, Maya Rudolph as Dr. Vlam, and Kieran Culkin as Dr. Plowp, just to name a few. Each of these characters bring something extraordinary to the table, even within the first few episodes. The Second Best Hospital In The Galaxy season one does a wonderful job of allowing for character development, world building, and story, to work together harmoniously to deliver one of Prime Video’s best animated series yet.
This show is unafraid to push the envelope when it comes to adult themes, but at the same time it weaves in a whole lot of heart. It is easy to root from these characters right from the very first episode. They might be aliens and robots, but they have a lot of relatable qualities that we humans know a bit about.
The first thing that comes to mind is anxiety, which is a theme that is tackled from the start, and done so in a way that even those with the smallest amount of anxiety will understand. On top of that, there is discussion and exploration of troubled parent relationships, and coming from a home that is so horrible you don’t want to talk about it ever — even with your best friend.
It goes without saying that the animation style is unique and intriguing as well. It works perfectly for a world like this.
The Second Best Hospital In The Galaxy is funny. Like really funny. The writers have outdone themselves as it perfectly blends together the troubles that humans struggle with everyday, with the vibe of two friends who just want to help people survive. This show is grounded in their relationship, portraying it in a believable and mature way. This is very much an adult animated series, as topics include things like sex.
All eight episodes in season one tell a cohesive story, while also exploring side stories. These characters are a whole lot of fun, and we cannot wait to see more in season two.
